This is Stanley, the main character from a game I am working on.Ã, I used several resources to create him.Ã, Is this too corny-looking?Ã, What do you think?
Very original drawing style,
I like it a lot, but one thing bothers me..
his head looks like he's some rough indiana jones guys
his body looks like hes gay (no offense)
Maybe take away the rough "beard", it would make him a lot more boyish.. just like the body..
Keep in mind, the program I used had limited options for body structure and appearence.
(That does look better, don't it?)
Maybe he is gay!
Although I don't like his head (LOVE the textures on his clothes), can't quite place why.. maybe it's his big eyes or big head. Perhaps this is just my personal preference, lets see if anyone else likes his head.
EDIT: Oh you've just posted a new pic.
You mean... it's one of those clothe your own character things on the net?
Yeah! But I modified it quite a bit. It just gave me a general idea. So now you know that its not my fault he looks gay. C'mon, I tried! ;D
This isn't the actual controlled player. It's for cutscene purposes only.
I think its nice. As long as you don't have to animate him too much, it should be OK. However, it looks like his legs are a bit too long compared to the rest of his body.
Shortened the legs (looks like a hobbit with a huge head)
Looks cool! Gay... but cool. Where did you find this again?
He looks much better with this head..
if u really think the legs are too long, shorten em a bit.. but not as much as this.. he looks indeed like a hobbit now..
don't use dolls for characters. You'll have to animate later and that sort of detailed texture on the legs is going to make it a real headache. Also personally I find this semi-manga semi-fashion boy thing going on in doll utilities to be annoying, but each to his own. Oh and your avatar freaks me out majorly.
Looks cool, the only major problem I can see is that the textures on the clothes ignore the body shape. For example, the stripes on his trousers are perfectly vertical. They should respect the shape of the legs and the folds.
Very nice, very original!

Actually, that's one of the things I liked about it. Reminds me of those cartoons where the pattern remains the same no matter where the guy is moving, like Stan's jacket.
I think the head size could use a little shinking horizontily wise. Other then that I think it's great. What did you say you made this with?
Yes, the textures are nice. Maybe just stretch his upper body out some. I think it's a mixture of that and his arm position that make him look lanky. Yeah, and shrink the head some.
But this is all changes to a character you haven't made, so I say forget about it. Try redrawing it yourself, preferably with less colors, because, like Helm said, it'll be very hard to animate.
How's this:
Looks like Anne Heche dressed as Indiana Jones!!!!
(oh, and, Helm? My avatar freaks you out?Ã, :D You should see what I really look like!Ã, :o )
OKAY!Ã, I scratched the whole "Gay Hobbit" thing and created a brand newÃ, character using MS Paint.
Meet the new Stanley:
note: this is just a rough edit, but what do you all think?
(my girlfriend said he looks like John Mayer :-\ )
Very nice for MS-Poop. He looks very thin from the side, dont know if thats on purpose.
Yeah.Ã, He's a skinny little bastard like meÃ, ;D
(unless anyone believes that he might need a little gut stickin out?)
And I agree that MS Paint is pure s#%t, but it works and I am very skilled with all of its features (or lack thereof), but thanx for the comment!Ã, :=
I am an expert MS-poop Background artist. Skillz in these vains. Its all about zooming in.
The hidden x10 zoom helps me out alot with tiny areas.

The what?! ???
Ya' know, the hidden times 10 zoom for MSPaint? Try it out! Go to the zoom menu, where it says:
x1
x2
x6
x8
Press on the pixel right below times eight, but not off the menu yet, it takes a few tries, but x10 is there. There's also a x4, but to get to it, you have to hit the magnifying glass and click on the image BEFORE selecting a zoom rate, meaning you'll have to open a file or start a new one to deselect the current zoom rate. x4 works well for 320x200 backgrounds.
:o Obviously I don't pay enough attention to things like that. ::)
Thanks.
EDIT: taffytom, everything Akumayo said was true.
I am an idiot
and the 4x is in the zoom menu.
What post?Ã, This isn't a post!Ã, There were never any posts! Posts are just a myth!!!
I stand corrected.
I'm glad you guys are enjoying critiquing my character. ;D
Well, at least we were on the topic of what program created your character :D
Back to your character though, in the middle view he doesn't seem to have an ass... at all, and also in the middle view, some of the lines around him are anti-aliased, but that might be due to the format. Also, his body seems to be different sizes, and his neck located at different heights, depending on which view you look at.
I think the head doesn't fit the style of the rest of the body. Right now he's pretty hypercephalic, even after the second version. The figure's pose looks a bit manga, too. Too many different styles mixed together, I think. Not to say you can't mix styles together necessarily, but in this case I think it would look better if you tried to maintain a consistant style.
Also try tweaking his hat some. I think the edges are too straight, because right now it's reminding me of Buckethead for some strange reason.
You might want to simplify the texturing a lot, too, otherwise that's going to be quite a pain to animate. I mean, imagine redrawing each frame... :P

Really quick sloppy edit:
The skin tones need a lot of work and the head should be smaller and not as frontal. Also, the hand to the left should go down as if it is relaxed. Something about its position as of now is too feminine.
You got your brothers talent... I'm proud of you...
*Nikolas wipes the tears of his eyes*
But ye shall never get out of HIS (BB) shadow... hahahahar
Critique: A huge difference between the two sprites you provided. The second one is sooo simple that lacks any normal human feautre really. No ass, no crotch, no... The first one is soooo detailed that it will be an ass trying to animate it (but you could keep it for concept art, or some non animated cutscene), or you could simply be mad enough to try an animate it. With lots and lots of patience it will work...
I actually like the original post. I like that he looks a bit unsaved. I like his pants. I actually do like his feminine side (why not?)
QuoteBut ye shall never get out of HIS (BB) shadow... hahahahar
At least he has the courtesy not to post any of my musical abortions. :)
The second version looks more like a game character, that's why I like it more than the first one. Keep going on with your style, it's pretty cool ^_^.
Alright.Ã, I've improved a bit.Ã, Here's the latest:
A new version of Stanley (for cutscenes. (mostly just talking):
And the playable version:
(it had seemed anti-aliased before because I made it larger.
this is actual size.)
I think he looks like a prepy fashion model in the cutscene version...
Still, in the playable version, his head/body height seems to change with each view. Is this intended?
Yeah. The "preppy fashion model" thing is intentional. I wanted him to look like a stuck-up a$$hole. It's all part of the game. But what do you mean about the playable character? I put all the frames together in the walking animations and they seemed alright.
If they look alright in walking animation, then it's no big deal, I just thought it would look like his head was changing sizes, but you've obviously either fixed this or worked around it. Sorry to have bothered you with it. And why make a game about a preppy fashion model? I hope, before the game is over, that he either a.) learns a lesson, or b.) dies
;D
I dislike preps!
QuoteYeah. The "preppy fashion model" thing is intentional. I wanted him to look like a stuck-up a$$hole.
No you didn't. It's the premade poses in whatever doll thing you're using to make these. Just ditch the premade graphics and make everything like you did the in-game sprites. Might not look pretty but it'll be cohesive and you'll benefit lots from it.

(Saracasm kids)
Okay.Ã, No one likes a prep, and Helm,Ã, Yes, the body is pre-made, but I created the head. (obviously because it isn't ten times too big as with before.)
So basically, what should I change (besides his head) to relieve him of the "prep" label?
(I mean, if you think about it, it's just a guy wearing a leather jacket, a white t-shirt and blue jeans.Ã, Thats not prep.)Ã, Ã, :-\
Well, his clothes aren't necessarily preppy, it's the pose.
Check out Fonzie... He has a leather jacket, too, but he isn't preppy! :=
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/TikiTikiMan13/fonzie.jpg)
Do what Helm said. Draw everything yourself, that's the only way you'll get better.
hand on the hip, leg forward. Gotta go
Okay.Ã, Some new poses:
(http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c299/Infarock/new3.png)(http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c299/Infarock/new2.png) Or, the killer pose?(http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c299/Infarock/gun.png)
But I think this is the best one:
The third one is the only one that doesn't make him look like a fashion model I think.
I got it!!!Ã, A game where a male fashion model explodes in a murderous rage and destroys all who teased and stereotyped him!!!Ã, lolÃ, Ã, ;DÃ, Just kidding.
Yeah.Ã, I like the third one the best too.
(By the way.Ã, Ever seen the movie "Sin City"?
( Hmmm....His pose looks kinda' familiar, and he's not a fashion modelÃ, := )
A moment ago you called the fourth one bestÃ, :P
No, I haven't seen Sin City.
I said "I think this one is the best"
Keyword:Ã, THINK
But thanks for your feedback.Ã, (not sarcastic) ;D
I really think you should drop whatever program your making him it, open MSPain(t), and start drawing, that's the only way you'll ever get better at this stuff. (Don't have to use MSPain, but I do...)
I'm making him in paint.
(Unless you know any better programs that actually work good and won't infest my computer with spyware when I download them)
I like paint... I know it has limited functionality, but I usually can't find a great use for that higher functionality. I like it just as it it... ;D
True.Ã, Paint is easy to use, but it lacks advanced features like rotating the images and filters like blur, sharpen, etc.Ã, And the almighty MAGIC WAND!!!Ã, Paint needs a magic wand.Ã, God I love that thing.Ã, Anyway.Ã, Heres my final graphic.Ã, The title screen to my new game. (the space on the right side is for "save", "load", etc.).
Ã,Â
Stanley (the fashion modelÃ, ;D not really) and his girlfriend, Mila.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone!!!
wo, wo, wo, wo... You made the Title Screen BEFORE you made the game? ::)
NO NO! Hell no! I've been working on the game for a while. lol. I have about 40% of it done. I'm gonna put a post in the production forum about it soon.
Oh, okay ;D
Sorry about that, seemed odd to me.
It's all good. Thanks for all the help people.
You'll see my game on "In Production" soon. :)
isnt that just a photo of some asian city????? ???
I dont see the resemblance in the sin city thing. Go to here

It's a Canadian city.
He's holding the gun the same way.
and thanks
As if the flag didn't give it away ::)

(Please don't mind the mustaches... I couldn't resist! :=)
Maybe Canadian women do have facial hair......hmmm......
(I like my edit better, but don't be enviousÃ, ;DÃ, Just kidding.)
he he he.Ã, What do you think
Why are all the guys lookin so gay? Maybe its the posing, the black leather, the girly hands, the hair or the cute teen boy faces. Dont know why but they look tottaly gay. Nothing against gays but I doubt thats your aim as an artist... Try something more macho.
Quotehe he he. What do you think
what I think is that you're hurting your own artistic growth in playing with doll-based character creation.

Yes. "Playing" is correct. That last matrix pic was just a joke (i wasn't really trying to accomplish any "growth".Ã, I was just messing around.Ã, I would never attempt to make a matrix game with matrix characters cuz I wouldnt even know where to start.)
And I'm glad you all think this is gay ("gay" being defined as "Happy")
I appreciate that. (Or do they look "Homosexual"?)
I think we all know which gay is meant. Just STOP using the doll thing or stop posting them. I would suggest that you stop using it because no one wants you to stop trying to get critiqes. The leather, fashion poses, and extreame GAY hairstyles are just not working. Faces freak me out as well.
whats wrong if they look "gay" sure having them in fashon poses would look uber weird in a game, unless your saterizing the fashion world, like zoolander did, but the sprites are well drawn, andhasve a very disticnctive style, at least they are consistent, something very hard to do.so what if they look "gay" thats just there style.
but that is not the indented style as he stated before.

You are entiltled to your own opinion (thats what "criticism" is),and I am glad to be receiving several opinions.Ã, My intention (as with all posts in Critics Lounge), was to receive replies as to how the images look and how I could improve them (which is exactly what happened), so I will not STOP posting my ideas, because feedback helps me better understand what other people think of my work.Ã, If you fail to understand that this is the whole pupose of "Criticism", then maybe you should STOP replying.Ã, ;D
I think they look "Camp" actually, rather than "Gay" seeing as being gay doesn't make you dress up like A YMCA reject.
(But JRock, I'm taking the mic outta the default drawings, your actual own work is superior in my eyes)
