Title: Messed up walk cycle :(
Post by: LRH on Thu 13/01/2011 05:28:06
Title says it all. I'm having issues with a walk cycle once again. For the sake of the game, I need this character's strides to be rather short, so I can't simply paint over the lovely sprites Jim Reed Made me for Living Nightmare: ED.

This is what I've got so far. I've done the up/down cycles without a hitch, but the side view is killing me. It looks like there's 1 or 2 frames missing, it looks like he's stomping his foot down rather than gracefully moving forward like normal people do.

Paintovers, tips, etc. more than welcome.

(Note: I will make the sort of 'bobbing' effect once the sprite is complete.)

I thing one thing thats throwing me off is while I know it is a four frame animation it looks like 2. i would change up the frames just a bit to add a little more variety. as for fluidity and grace, the best way would be by adding a few more inbetweens. if you follow his feet it goes from a smooth motion of the foot going back to a hard can-can knee thrust. add a frame between the leg in the farthest back position and the knee coming forward. Once thats in, adjust the misstep accordingly... if this doesn't make any sense let me know and i'll do a paint over for ya.

Yupp, what cpage said. Make one additional frame between the farthest back and the bent position.

I'll be giving this a shot in a minute.

Still a bit stiff but getting there.
Also, I need to fix his arms.

Much better now! You could also give the left leg a slightly darker shading than the front leg to make them more distinguishable. Or use darker outlines.

It is looking a lot better now!
Like Cat mentioned use a shade to push the back leg further back.

as for the arms
you currently have 4 frames where it is a backward motion and 2 forward.
with a six frame animation you will need to make a choice. you need a key frame at each extreme (left hand forward, right hand forward) now you will have two frames going back and two going forward.

Instead of having a straight up and down frame cut the distance in thirds.  so you will have something like / and \
also to match the legs better you may want to move the extremes out a bit to loosen the upper body up a bit.

Keep it up!

This is the first time I've ever made an edit for someone...It's not perfect but maybe you'll like it. I focused only on the movement of the legs though. I just made a quick edit so... :)

That little bobbing up and down of the head and torso in Mouth's edit does wonders.  No one (without practice and/or a wheelchair) can move forwards without their head bobbing a bit.
