Title: My best character sprites up to date.
Post by: Dan_N on Thu 04/01/2007 18:32:16
Ok, for my new game, I've made some character sprites that I'm terribly proud of. Of course, that doesn't mean they're any good. Here they are:

It's supposedly a man. He's faceless because the player can type in his name, so there wasn't really any point in making him a face. Also, if I would've made a face for him, I probably would've ruined it. He's also a mech pilot in a distant future, hence the weird gear.

What are your thoughts?

Try some shading:

2X:

Really quick edit.

- Added some minor shading.
- Made the front view look more like a front view.

I think he looks weird without a face though.

What this sprite primarily needs is some realistic anatomy.
I pushed around some pixels and ended up with this

I'd at least provide him with a generic face though.

Ok, I've tried to combine Rap's and Khris' sugestions:
2x

Although I value Khris' input, I'd like to leave a certain ammount of "non-realism" to my sprites to define my style.

the shading isn't necessary and it makes the character look worse. But seriously listen to khris's suggestion and study his drawing carefully. Watch the anatomy, look at your image and work out what's wrong with it. The legs and shoulders are what stands out for me. His right leg looks bowed and his crotch doesn't seem to exist. His shoulders are to high and his arms fall down too straight. I'd do a paint over but Khris did it really well.

I like where you are going.

I like Khris sprite, but agree that it doesn't seem to match the style that you want.

I think the main points are:
-The guy's knees are popping out to the side / he looks bow legged
-he definately needs a crotch (unless being crotchless is part of his character)
-His upper body looks to boxy/ arms falling too straight / shoulders too flat

I think you should be proud of what you've done so far

-pants

Quick edit, gave him a fairly generic face and sharpened the shading a bit.

his arms are still a bit wonky, but i focused on the shading and his face.
