Title: My first BG for critics
Post by: Buckethead on Tue 15/08/2006 16:03:04
hey,

me again.

I just made this background and I need some suggestions. I'm sure there's something awfully wrong with the perspective of the pavement but I don't know how to fix that  :-\. Any help is welcome.

There is no perspective of the pavement, because there's nothing to justify it. Maybe some cracks or some objects on the sidewalk to help give it some depth. After you've chosen a vanishing point, you could change the sides of the street lines to give them some better depth.

I think the doorknob should look less like a blob and more like a doorknob.
Just a suggestion.

Paintover:

-Made bottom of door touch pavement, rather than have brick gap in between.

-Changed black blob to doorknob.

-Added lines in sidewalk (trying to match your lighting).

The lighting in this is a little strange... if you look at how the colours get darker, the light would appear to be coming from above and to the right of the image. If you look at the bricks however, the light appears to be coming from above and to the left of the image. I think that it would look better if you matched the lightsources for all objects.

Looking from this view the door should be a lot bigger and the window should be higher.

If you don't want to change these, you should make the sidewalk less wide. I think :)

What does the size of the pavement has to do with the size of the door? Some streets have small pavements some streets have bigger ones. I think it's fine this way. To be honest.

Don't forget to correct the perspective of the road to match that of the sidewalk (Meaning the painted lines should not look like perfect rectangles). I would suggest you take a peek at a tutorial on vanishing point to get a better idea of how to setup backgrounds for adventure games.

I would suggest :

Using persepctive (as mentioned)
Repostition window and maybe resize.
Resize Door
Dont use Paint shop pro or photoshop textures.

Also just look at the general scale of things in accordance with everything else.

Regards,

Afflict.

Here is a quick paintover for the building part of the picture.

Main problem to me was that the bricks are huge. Also bricks normally don't start right from the ground. Instead there is either larger stones or cement or similar before bricks are laid.

I wasn't sure what kind of building this is, so I gave it a strong metal door. Or atleast a start of one, can't really say it's finished or polished. :)
