Title: New Background
Post by: Bartimaeus on Fri 10/06/2005 14:47:08
Okay this is for a game I'm making for a friend...

It's meant to be in the Kalahari with the sun setting.

What do you guys think of the lighting?
I'm also not too happy with the ground itself, but what can I do to change it?

Finally, there is supposed to be an electric fence around the hut, but I dont want the fence obscuring the hut from the front.
Does anyone have any ideas on the matter?
I also want to put barbed wire on the top of the fence but I don't know how to draw it.

Paintovers will be GREATLY appreciated but critics will do just fine.
:D

Thanks guys,
~Billy

Overall, it looks okay.Ã,  What you have is a good start.

I have no time right now to do a paintover, but here's what I'm seeing:

Ligting:
I would add dark clouds to the sky to make the orange object actually look like a sunset.Ã,  The hut, fence, lamp-post-thing, and tree should all be casting shadows on the ground.

Ground:
The hill between the hut and the outhouse should be a gentle slope, and not a sharp 45 degree angle.

Fence:
If you're worried about the fence obscuring the hut, then you might just want to rethink the whole background.Ã,  Maybe do an over-head view of everything so it's all clearly visible with no obsurities at all.

A rushed paintover:

I tried to fix the lighting and added barb wire.
The ground looks like a platform game's sideview, so I didn't shade/change it.

The lighting was quite reversed, with the sun being darker than the sky and the lantern's light even darker.
About the lantern: The way you drew it, it doesn't cast that cone-shaped light. Also the light casted by a lightsource is only visible when reflected to the eye. Think of a car's headlights, the cones only appear when it's raining or snowing or there's quite an amount of smoke or dust in the air.

Traveller, thanks for the critics man, much appreciated.

Khrismuc, Thanks ALOT for the paintover. That's all I needed is just someone to touch on the things I overlooked or couldn't do. I really appreciate any time you put into it.

Thanks guys,
I are done here!Ã,  ;D

EDIT: Oh and thanks for the great lighting tips - Seriosuly ridiculously helpful (No joke)

Like Khrismuc said I think you should reconsider redoing the whole background - it's 2D right now ...

You should consider doing this as a scrolling background: (really rushed +- 5 mins haha)

Khrismuc didn't say anything about redoing the whole thing.
I'm actually very happy with the 2D - It's what I'm going for with the game.

I've got around the fence thing by drawing a line of barbed wire on each end, just one. Now it basically shows that there's a back fence and a fence to the sides of the house - but not in front.

Which is fine, I suppose...  :D

This is meant to be 2D

A sunset without glow, that just hurt my eyes, so I had to do a paintover:

The clouds are messy, but just for the general idea.
I really like the pic. You don't see these kind of backgrouds very often.

I second that! I'd love to see a 2D adventure game.
However, the shape of the hut doesn't match the rest of the pic. The roof is round, but it should show flat straight from this viewpoint.
