I'm making some simple sprite for an unofficial mini Wall-E game. Here is the inspiration and the sprite. I'm having trouble making it clear whilst still keeping colours down and contrast up...
And critique welcome.

Wall EEEeeeeeee....
I think it looks really good. Maybe adjust the shading in the front box a bit, but really nice.

OK, I've reduced the saturation of the sprite, and I've drawn Eve and Wall-E in a little background. I'm going for quick and simple, I'm fairly pleased so far...

Looks good but the wheels are really missing those mechanical sections, and it looks pretty naked.
Maybe this will help show what I mean:

Nice job so far. =D
Damn, that's cool :) Love WallE. And you did well. Agree with theRedPress - wheels need some other stuff to roll :) Like axis and shafts and stuff (I'm not a techincian sorry :=).
PS: Love how his beloved one looks :) But you forgot her front panel.
A Wall-E game, loving it!
I really dig the simple style and IMHO you nailed the dusty, used atmosphere of the post-apocalyptic, junkyard Earth.
But I think your sprite could use a little more contrast to set it apart from the BG.
Here is a wee paintover to demonstrate what I mean:

I also added some more detail and tried to tweak the perspective a bit.
Ah, very nice edit indeed.
I've given Wall-E another go. I did like the low saturation, so I've edited the colours and a few other things on Mad's edit (which was brilliant). I'm just not sure it still fits the style I have going on in the background. I quite liked the naive, simple look of my original sprite...
I can't decide! ;)

This one is much better imho. It does resemble the character much more!
I just think it looks a bit messy. I can't really describe it. It's not clean and simple, there are too many colours...
Might be because of the so-called 'banding effect' on the back of his head (1), outline lighter than the interior color in a shadowed area of the sprite (2) and the lack of shading (hence lack of depth effect) in the tracks.

Looks very nice though.
Nice there man...Eve looks perfect btw.
Lovely sprite indeed, especially in the last edit- the eyes! Groo-vy! If anything, I'd make the arms/hands gray, as they are supposed to be. This could also help to make them easier to distinguish from the body.
The backgrounds *could* be a bit more detailed, but that's a personal opinion- in their current state they match the sprite style quite well, but are a bit rough around the edges.
Oooh, purty! ;D
I like how the bg has a real blasted, washed out feel. Kinda like the whole planet had in the movie.
The only thing I'd mention is the first sandy dunes-ish layer just behind Wall-E. It looks a bit too organic. The feel I got from the movie was more that the world had been bled dry of all natural resources. Pretty much that everything had been converted into something Buy-n-Large could sell. So maybe add some more angles or impressions of actual junk in the pile rather than a nice swoopy line.
@Kastchey: I'm going to try and brush those things up in another edit later today... :)
@Dualnames: Thanks!
@Ghost: Grey arms I'm going to try and go back to in the next edit, too. I think it will help, I was just impatient because I couldn't get them quite right before...
I am planning on adding chunks of rubbish to the far 'hills' and piles on the floor with little crushes cubes of rubbish, too. As you should be able to make these in the game... ;)
@twentyfour: Yeah, as I said to Ghost, the background will have some detail added, so there are bits of rubbish sticking out of the piles. Like there is in the foreground pile.
Right. I have some options now for the sprite. I managed to neaten it up a bit, I think.
I left the current one in for comparison...
Also, I've started work on the details of the background! :)
Which sprite is everyone's favourite and how is the background looking?

Shoot, I haven't noticed your update up until now and I already edited your last sprite!
I like the new cleaned up version shape-wise, but I must say that I preferred your old colour scheme.
Anyways here is my edit:
I made the outline of the head more consistent to the body.
I also added som features to the wheeles and tracks. I know you want to keep it simple, and right you are, but I think the details will help you convey some motion during animation, so it will not look like the little guy is floating over the ground.
Also did a paintover of Eve to make her more consistent to Wall-E outline- and size-wise.
EDIT: Sorry for mucking up your colours, must have happend somewhere along the line of working on it with my Mac and GIMP and the PC and PS, oh well!
