Spot on Snoopy's back...

I took a notion to model Snoopy, of Charlie Brown fame. I'm not unsatisfied with my model (Anim8or), but the spot on his back is an issue, and I'd appreciate some suggestions on UV mapping, if you don't mind.

The black, here, is coloring individual faces in the model. That won't work for a round spot on his back. I've played a little with UV mapping, enough to know there are several types of maps that UVMapper (Classic) can generate (Planar, box, etc.). It also looks to me like the type to use is the one that makes painting the texture map easiest. Any insights into which type might work best on this model? I'd also made an attempt at Charlie Brown's shirt, where cylindrical seems an excellent choice, but then encountered problems when the mesh gets subdivided. Is it, generally, best to try do the texture maps at the level of subdivision you intend for the "final" product?

Thanks, as always for your insights.

I'll troll a tiny bit, but this is a cow, not a dog, right?

Tabata

It's a nice start for a cool Snoopy!

@ Nikolas - The cow, of which you are speaking and who shall remain nameless in this thread, has pointy horns and more spots. Snoopy's single spot is the problem. The cow, in that other thread, had spots that I could generate with a texture map, and move the map around until they were in roughly the right place. While I could, probably, do the same with the single spot, I'd like to learn a bit more about UV Mapping. I will confess to seeing the "family" resemblance between the two; they both source back to the original block, or instance thereof. ;) I also confess to a devious plan to bring Snoopy into that other thread, which shall remain nameless in this thread. I wanted a Charlie Brown shirt for that cow of which you are speaking. The shirt is actually more of a problem for me than the spot. Good Grief.

@ Tabata - Thank you!

Nikolas

jwalt: I wasn't aware of any other thread, or a cow. I was joking in a silly way. Sorry about that.

The reason it looks like a cow to me is because his... behind is a bit large, compared to that of a dog, I think. In addition it's so low on details that I'll admit that it could be 'anything' pretty much.

Sorry for being a harsh and for the joke before.

@Nikolas - I didn't take offense. I got a chuckle. You should check the "Ponch is in trouble" thread in the Rumpus Room, for a fuller understanding. No, wait... Don't do that, since it mentions the cow we weren't mentioning. Sorry about that.

I've got a spot, now, so I continued working on it. The original intent was the Snoopy Dance. The good thing about sucking with this stuff, is that no one associated with the Peanuts' copyright will ever admit that my dog is Snoopy.  <sigh>

The thigh muscles don't pop right, and I need to fix the area under the arms. I did put in a blink morph, but this doesn't show it off all that well.

Nikolas could have seen a chicken in the model, as well as his cow. It's a multipurpose model.

Edit: In view of Nikolas fat cow comparison, I put NotSnoopy on a weight reduction program. And Tabata's cute gif, above, made me do this:

Thin NotSnoopy didn't want to bend into this shape. Don't know if fat NotSnoopy would have. And sorry Tabata, I don't have a NotWoodstock. Best I could do at this point in time.

Tabata

He, he, hee â€" nice funny adaptation (laugh)

I can't help myself but somehow it gives me the feeling like it is a little masochistic version of Snoopy
because it makes me expect the pelican to put out a whip every moment

No idea how 3d modeling works, but id say all you need is to give some more shape to his skull and he's instantly recognizable. Snoop's got a fat skull, your model looks more like a realistic rendered proportioned dog's head.
tldr: I say too much
