Title: Something to polish up my PS skills
Post by: on Sat 22/10/2005 00:15:08
I found a great little book yesterday, called "Polished Brushed Fantasy" (Carlsen Comics Verlag, Germany). Weird title (especially for a german magazine) but a fine selection of artwork made in different paint programs using only the tools, no scans. In an attempt to polish up my background skills I did this little masterpiece in about 1 1/2 hours.
The character is shamelessly stolen from "My Life As A Teenage Robot", but everything's done by me; only the character's sketched, the rest is airbrush tools, smudge, blur filters and a lot of fiddling with the "colour variations" tool.

Looks a wee bit grainy because I downgraded it to 256 colours for upload, but still- Have a look and tell me if you like it!

(BTW I think a MLAATR fan game would be cool, but it's pretty hard to think of a plot... and the animations of a robot that has more gadgets than Mac Gyver AND Inspector Gadget would kill everyone's shedule... sigh)

I just use Internet Explorer 6.0 and it prompts for "open" or "save". I chose "open" and it worked.

Anyways, the picture is great. ;D The only thing I can see that looks weird is the hands. But other than that it is good.

it works in my browser too (IE6). I can even save it.

I tried to make "Unit XJ9" ("Call me Jenny!") look like she does in the series. And that means relatively simple outlines. I couldn't refrain from adding some shadows and reflexes, another thing she doesn't have in the cartoon.
happy you like it!

Please post JPEG or PNG's next time, they're generally smaller in file sizes and more web friendly (many browsers can't display PCX's directly, you need to save them and view with other viewers).

More disney like quick edit:

I think the thing holding it back the most is the palette. There are no real warm colors to compete with the very dominant cool, so you get very limited color contrast, which just like limited value contrast usually creates a pretty dull look.

The symmetric composition is quite boring as well, and the straight front view isn't the most interesting choice either. Without any overlapping objects and the limited shading, the depth also suffers.

On the other hand, the clouds are really nice (the right one doesn't really work as well though imo),and the idea of having her twirling through a cloud works very well, which also goes for her pose.

The photoshop file if you're interested - 500 kb (it's a mess though) (http://marcus.krupa.se/AGS/jennyairborne.psd)

that's a very nice edit; i like the way you did her shading. I'd like to have that file- but the link doesn't work for me... any chance you send it by mail?
