well it's been too long, but as ive said in the game production section I'm finally getting back to some sort of progress with the game. Here's a rough tablet sketch i did of the Main character (she's called gloria in case some of you may have forgotten. The plan is to clean it up and colour it up. Ill keep progress posted:

Looks great, can't really say any crits though until I see the cleaned up version ;)
Looks good, but considering we've already seen Gloria in several screenshots, as well as your avatar, isn't it a bit late for concept art?
yeah i guess 'concept' was the wrong word really, lets just stick to art then.

Did a rough sketch with the tablet then just gave it a quick colour.
Wow, she looks alot older. In the previous sketchs and works I was thinking she was 10 or 12, but here she looks 14. I like the change, it will go well with the game, cant wait to see it finished. Only crit is the shadow on shirt rightbelow the strap on the left how it juts out, doesnt appear natural.

Yeah, i know what you mean, i did try to blow the size of the boots and the hat up a little to make them look as if they drowned her slightly, but she does look older.
As for the shadowing, there's a lot not quite right, the shadow on her right sleeve should really be on the left of the sleeve seeing as theoretically the lightsource is coming from the right. But as i said it was just a quick colour so i'm not too bothered. I'm working on a new BG too, so ill get the progress up for that soon and perhaps even make a tutorial if people would be interested enough?

cool, ill get to it then.
NICE. I've been loving the stuff you've been doing for this game that I've seen so far -- it's SO close to what I'd like to be doing for one of the games I'm trying to work on. A tutorial of what you do would be just DANDY.
As far as the sketch, well, I find that her face ha changed shape a bit, and that helps make her look significantly older, too.
come on people. how can you all expect a girl around that age to not look significantly different after a year without updates. Shes a year older now... she'll look different. ;)
and yes, I would really like to see a tutorial on your backgrounds.

LMAO, yeah yeah i can take the digs :p good things come to those who wait i say! im working on a way to make how i do the BGs and techniques i use etc.
BG is coming along nicely, although can somebody point me in the direction of a BG tutorial that was created previously so i can get an idea of structuring etc?
Got bored today, so i did another quick sketch with the tablet. Bit cheesy i know lol:

Nice work as always, Dan..One thing I suppose you could try (if you want to make her look younger) is make her eyes a bit larger and round her face a bit more. Looks fine as is, though ;>
Hehe nice. I love all of your art. It's really very good. The biggest difference for your pixel are I see is in the face. Just the eyes and the mouth.
Ive been doing some sketcvhes for reference as I'm currently tinkering with the walk cycle, so i needed some side on drawings to make sure she looked right. Here's one oif them, which i coloured and added some lighting.

Comments welcome.
P.S: I just realised the hat lines behind her ear are a bit crappy, i was meaning to finish them but i forgot, doh! :p
P.P.S: The style doesnt really represent how she looks in game, i just like messing with different styles when i sketch, as you may know.
anyone? :-\
The only problem I see is that the hair on the other side of her face looks as if its growing off her chin.
It's a really nice piece overall. :)
(And the hair on the other side looks fine to me).
Two crits, though:
The ear is set a bit too high up, should be from about the top of the eyes to the bottom of the nose.
Also, the shape of the eye is... Weird. Looks like it's been rotated 90°.
Awesome line work, btw. :)

erm...i cant say i really see that myself lol.
Al_ninio, i see what you mean about the ear, but i think ill just put that down to a slight head tilt rather than anything else :p and im quite happy with the eye :)
Id quite like to do a full piece in this style, perhaps ill make some sort of promotional poster once the games closer to completion :)
in my opinion she looks a bit too old in that sketch, compared to previous ones.
now she looks like she's about 15.. especially the eye and eyebrow cause that effect.
but that may aswell be just my impression ;)
oh, and that blue eyes and brown hair rarely mix. i would expect her eyes to be green or brown :)
ear is a bit too far on the back side of the head, maybe move it a bit towards the nose.
otherwise great work, love the colours.
cool sketches. I relay like your stile. How do you colour the sketches. With a computer or an actual brush? If you use the computer how do you make it look like watercolors.
I like all your so called sketches (look like final art to me). In the side view, though, some things bothered my eye. Here's a sketch of what I think you could (not necessarily) change:
- keep the eye size you drew in past "sketches".
- eye and eyebrow in a more frontal position (they're looking 3/4 view)
- nose\forehead\chin: altered "geography" (hehe)
- gave more body to the hair. Brought some of it, clorer to the face.
- almost erased the jaw line... try to just shade it.
Cheers,
Stefano
the only problem with the ear (as far as I can see) is that too much of it is visible, and the hair behind it doesn't look like it is going behind an ear. It looks like she has an ear tacked on to her hair and hat. Also, isn't her neck too big?
Too OLD! that could be a woman in her late teens early twenties!

Lol yeah the edit looks a lot like my mum, but alas she looks far too old in that sketch. Yeah im not at all happy with the hat, and the ear is probably a bit too big. As for the neck, i think it is quite long but im not so sure if it's too long for it to look wrong, rather than suiting the style. Ill probably redo it taking into account some of the comments here, cheers for the feedback everybody, appreciated as always. :)
I, too, had a problem with the placement of the eye. For me, it looked odd because her eye wasn't centered around the bridge of the nose. I did a photoshop job to show you what i meant.
(now that i see my version here, i would, and have now done so on my saved file, move the eye just a small bit towards the nose more.)
and again, yes this image does make her look a bit older than she is... but not that much. oh, and i must say, you have such a talent. keep up the fantastic work. I cant wait to get my hands on a demo.

Hahahahahhahahaha! ;D ;D Guess I was so woried about changes, I did't pay much attention to her youth.
Well, I gess I have a thing for long necks. Zei look sooo Art Noveau, frrrench ilustrrrration...
Scummbuddy,
I think if Dan was going for a childish look, so the low eyes are just fine.
Here's my take on the eye, as it is really the only thing that bothers me about your drawing.
Also added a tiny diagram to show how the eyelids wrap around the eye from different angles, might be helpful. :)
Edit: Modified with somewhat less-evil-looking eye... I just think the original eye gives her a sort of alien look, no offense, of course.
eeee....not so sure about the HGal....she looks evil and very un-innocent there. Maybe because the blue is too pale?
There are indeed some minor issues with her ear and eye. Rather hard to pinpoint, though.
I made an attempt.

edit:
* removed outlining from the front of the eye (this was too marked, imo) Also made the eye a bit more from the side - in profile you probably don't see much more than this of the iris and pupil.
* moved the ear and jawline. I see now that the ear could be moved even further down. Even though the nifty effect of the ear covering the cap, the ear was situated unnaturally far back, in my opinion. I think she might look younger now, as well.
Just some thoughts. Maybe they don't help at all....

The changes should be explanatory, or so I hope.
Nice casual lines and form. The shading is somewhat strange though and doesn't really help convey the form imo.
On the eye question, i found the small/ black eye style in the first two sketches to be quite charming and sort of a defining characteristic, so the new blue eye sketch seems like a totally different character. This is not to say the more realistic version isn't striking (especially in loominous' edit).

Nice edit Loominous, i like what you've done with the shading in particular, although i think he bone structure looks a bit too 'defined' for her age.
As for the eye, i did say in the original post that the style doesnt represent how she looks in game, its just that i like to mess with different styles, to see what i can achieve.
