Title: Walk Cycle
Post by: Remco on Sat 10/07/2004 16:50:49
Hi all, ok, i`ve been working on this for a long time now. It is my first walkcycle. It is a 10 frame cycle.

This is the cycle:

For a closer look, here are the 10 frames:

1 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle1.gif) 2 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle2.gif)

3 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle3.gif) 4 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle4.gif)

5 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle5.gif) 6 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle6.gif)

7 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle7.gif) 8 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle8.gif)

9 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle9.gif) 10 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/sidesideboriswalkcycle10.gif)

I would like a lot of c & c.

By the way, the boy is the main character in my game.

ps. i used this one for inspiration http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=14759.0

tnx eric.

On frames 1,2,5 & 6 the buttocks stick out ... the others don't.  It looks odd in the animation.  Like his butt is flopping out.

I would suggest you add some butt-cheeks to the other frames.

On almost all the frames the shoes look a little wierd ... they extend too far back like he's got mutant heels or something.

I would suggest trimming the shoes down a little on the heel area.

Other than that I think it's pretty good!

in frame 2 you need to lessen the bend in his knee, as presently it looks as if hes doing a little skip.

Looks good. I have a couple of suggestions.

Currently, the shins are as thick as the thighs, as if his legs were tree trunks. Legs generally get thinner further down towards the foot. You might even want to try drawing the muscle at the back of his leg.

Also, the shading on his legs looks like wrinkles or blotches to me. Looks a bit unhealthy. Something smoother would be better.

I agree with the other comments made (knees bend too much, like rubber legs almost, butt moves weird).

Another thing I'd like to point out is if this game is set in the earlier decades then it's fine, but if you're making a modern game you might want to lengthen the shorts and perhaps make them a pixel baggier, otherwise the kid looks a bit queer (as in strange, not gay).

Thanks for all the critics. I have made an edit. I "repaired" his butt and i tryed to let the shoe look normal. I also made the bend in his knee some less.

Now his butt looks like a little rectangular thing in some frames...

You Could Try Improving the arms. They are not moving at all,and they look like they`re cut at the palms.

It's in a couple frames, but here's one frame just to point it out:
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/square_butt.gif) <- Square butt. (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/round_butt.gif) <- My rounded version.
I don't know about you, but I've never seen an ass with such a sharp bottom edge. Make it... err... more curvy?Ã,  ::)

NaStY_FrEaK, I think the arms are supposed to be in pockets. That's why you can't see the hands, and that's why they're not moving. Remco, I'd suggest drawing pocket outlines on the shorts... As well as lengthining them as I mentioned before.

tnx for all your help scott. I now have tried to fix that damn ass but i am not sure it is good now, i also tried to make outlines for the pocket but its hard in a low res character. anyway, here is the result:

There are unnecessarily many frames, in my opinion.

If you removed 4/9, which are rather unnatural anyway (the rear leg never really stretches back that far without bending), and widened the step in frame 3/8, that could improve the cycle.
It's hard to be sure without trying, of course.

tnx andail. i used eric his cycle as an example, and in that one he used 10 frames, but i have now looked at my animations if it would be 8 animations and IMO it looks bettter, what do you think? Here is the 8 frames animation:

A great improvement.
Not only is this cycle more harmonic, he seems more cartoonistically cheerful now

Much better... but there's still a frame where his left heel's all big.

One more thing - he obviously has his hands in his pockets.
However, this seems more like a time-saving solution than a natural pose; all in all, it gives him a pretty stiff expression.
Go all the way with this nice animation, animate his arms in a neat way and have a perfect walk cycle

Andail, i would love too, but i don't know how to draw hands at such a low resolution.

Very nice, but his feet (front) are too short.
