Which is better?

I'd go with the orb-hands. Personally I think an orb-hand with floating fingers would be best but that's up to you.

I think, well, basically you might want to keep the distances between the torso and the floating arms and legs the same so that it won't just look like a lousily built legoman. Also, I'd suggest dropping the shoulders a bit and perhaps stretching his crotch too. He looks a bit stiff at the moment.

Also, for the sake of it, here's the image, not the thumbnail, though I haven't painted over or anything. I just find this easier to look at.
