Title: A Rare Honour for Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw!
Post by: Mandle on Wed 19/02/2014 02:55:31
I'm not sure if the man himself (Yahtzee) is aware of this particular honour I discovered quite by chance but I thought I should point it out here. It's certainly worth some bragging rights!

I was reading through the official Wikipedia page for H.P.Lovecraft and:

The CHZO Mythos games (or Trilby Series) are mentioned under the "Games" heading of games inspired by the writings of Lovecraft!!!

To actually have a mention of your game on the official H.P.Lovecraft Wikipedia page is quite an honour I believe!

Cthudos to you sir!

I wish I had enough coordination to play platformers. I keep dying again and again. But the game is neat.

Wait, do you think that's the reason why I play adventure games?

Yeah but Yahtzee needs adventure games like the rest of us. So he's here somewhere, and probably is tzachs!!! Fuck you tzachzee! You are so definitely an australian brit with no beard or Israeli background!

Yahtzee got to be an asshole, left, people tried to get him back, he made some games "look, how great i am" and people are sucking up to a douche. My thoughts, after seeing his behavior on the EZ Boards.

Haha! This is the BEST summary of the whole story. (laugh)

I joined very late but I managed to successfully dig out the past and found what happened. Tragic story, to say the least... (roll)

The rational version of the story: an introvert decided to go do something else elsewhere with no hard feelings, the end.

Or the minimalist version: Whatever happened, it happened more than twelve years ago, so who the fuck cares?

I think what this thread needs is lots of relatively new people who weren't even around when Yahtzee was to explain what they think really happened.

The only worthwile thing with this thread was this quote:

Don't worry. His explanation (or apology) has been immortalized already! ;) Even though the original articles is lost somewhere in deep space (though it was intact the first time I checked it). So no hard feelings for anybody in general and Yahtzee in particular. :)

Sorry...I am fairly new to this site. When I started this thread I was not aware that the individual in question was a controversial figure for the more long-time members of the AGS community...

I was not trying to stir up any sour memories for anyone. My intention was only to bring to the community's attention something I perceived as an honour for Mr. Croshaw and the genre itself.

My apologies again, and if this thread is irrelevant due to his absence on this site, or is offensive to some people please feel free to lock it.

No, Ben was always a focussed AGS guy, he made games, he made sure people helped him make games. A lot of people just pissed around and chatted. From what I remember he didn't get involved in debates like some people did, literally, to the death. And as nemo said, he just did what all sane people do - focus on things without influence of any kind from the AGS community. Because, for a game designer, this place is stagnant - it always has been and always will be. You can stagnate your ass around here easy enough, but he decided to continue forward from that, as many, many have, and luckily enough he got a break - and luckily enough for US he continued to use AGS. So basically, he made games more passionately than most at that time in AGS's life, and then went on to do other things more passionately than the AGS community allows for. It can feel confined here, AGS games and people's personal problems. That's all good and well but if you're determined it's not exactly going to help you out, sometimes to blossom you need to put certain things down, kick certain habits etc.

In honesty, I think Yahtzee did a good thing, he stopped f****** around on some forums somewhere and got on with his career. We can all take a leaf from that tree, or whatever tez expression is ;) There was some bitterness then, maybe unbenknownst to most of us then, that we were just sad someone so passionate about making games was going elsewhere. You don't get that here anymore. And that's why Yahtzee is unique. First person pretty much to say fuck you, I need to progress and AGS effectively means I can't. And that's the harsh reality of it, you either spend your life being consumed by AGS, worrying about its ins and outs, the community, who you're pleasing & displeasing etc - or you put all that aside and actually get on with your ideals of a career and future. Back then none of us really knew, Yahtzee probably did. But now we can see, SO many people have left AGS to deal with their own paths. Yahtzee just made it public. But yeah, I still love that AGDzine article where we subtly call him a c*** ;) ;)

When I were new around here. I felt like that too. But now all the curiosity has died as though it was never there in the first place!

m0ds: I understand the point you wanted to convey. I personally know of one such person who has stopped using AGS and moved on to different things.

Still, it would've been great had he was still here. :)

I don't find it suspicious in the slightest that people dont want to talk about something that happened over a decade ago. I mean why should the veterans of the forums have to constantly tell every nosey newbie what happened? People have fights, they move on and forget them. If you are really hell bent on knowing why dont you do a forum search for Yahtzee, because frankly it gets brought up a lot as you will see. I don't blame people for getting sick of it.

Here is what Chris Jones had to say about the whole thing http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=1682.msg68984#msg68984

I wish people would stop feeling so entitled to know every tiny detail about things that are really just ancient internet dramas that they weren't even involved in. Curiosity does not somehow trump the fact people don't want to rehash it for the millionth time. Just learn to let go.
Title: Re: A Rare Honour for Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw!
Post by: Adeel on Sat 22/02/2014 10:26:04
I believe it's a natural phenomenon that new people are curious and will be curious about Yahtzee. Because he was and IS an internet celebrity and the fact that he was once deeply associated with AGS. And there are people too, such as myself who were introduced to AGS for the very first time solely because of his games. Hence the curiosity becomes much intensified.

Its just that some people do research on their own, form opinions and get satisfied while some need at least one witness of the matter to fully satisfy themselves before forming an opinion.

We can't put everyone in the same class. :)

I think it's completely reasonable to tell them to stop opening new threads and demanding answers when there is a working search function. The vets said what they had to say, it's rude to keep bringing it up and bitching when they don't want to go into the level of detail we might want. Frankly it's not our business.

Also I never said curiosity wasn't natural. I was curious myself, but being a rational adult I knew better than to ask about decade old drama because its a bit pathetic. And Yahtzee being an internet celebrity doesn't mean we somehow have the right to pry and badger the veterans. I understand being curious, I just dont think its appropriate to act like we are entitled to know everything about it. They have no obligation to talk about it, and we need to respect that.

If everyone thought rationally, wouldn't there be only peace and no wars? ;)

Bad joke aside, I completely agree with you. Search tool was indeed my best companion to dig out the history of this community in general and Yahtzee in particular.

Secondly, this thread was started by Mandle to inform us about an honour bestowed upon Yahtzee and not to ask anything about him. So, he's definitely not responsible for the conversation started here.

Moreover, I played an important part in derailing this thread. Hence, I apologize for that. :)

I know Mandle is not responsible. I have not insinuated he was even slightly. Anyone capable of reading can see that he hasn't attempted to push the issue, and who actually has.

But yes, no need to derail the original thread. It was 100% well intentioned.

Well, if you want on-topic discussion...

I mean no disrespect to Mandle, the post is clearly well-intended, but to be honest I find the idea of being mentioned on silly Wikipedia an honour quite funny. And not only because I have a grudge against Wikipedia for their methods, the deletion of the page for Ben Jordan series and general uselessness and inadequacy in any specific area of knowledge beyond the very basic level.

But also because... I mean being mentioned on Wikipedia can only mean one of the following two things:

And not only because I have a grudge against Wikipedia for their methods, the deletion of the page for Ben Jordan series and general uselessness and inadequacy in any specific area of knowledge beyond the very basic level.

But also because... I mean being mentioned on Wikipedia can only mean one of the following two things:

  • some random guy or gal who likes you/your stuff managed to sneak a mention of you/your stuff past the pedantic fun-hating wiki moderators and they weren't vigilant enough to spot and delete it... yet
  • it's actually mentioned so much outside of wikipedia that it's actually "notable" by Wikipedia standards, which in turns means it's already so well-known that a mention on Wikipedia AS WELL adds essentially nothing

I see your points here, and if the games had merely been mentioned on Wikipedia somewhere I would not consider that a notable honour in and of itself...

It was the fact that they are mentioned on the H.P. Lovecraft page, one of the absolute giants of (some would even say father of) the entire horror genre, that impressed me. As this page probably gets literally tens of millions of hits per year (if not more) I would expect it is quite well "policed" by the Wikipedia staff in regard to cutting out useless or irrelevant content.

Also I want to add that I did not think that any of the "rubbernecking past the car accident" comments were aimed at myself, but thanks to those that went out of their way to say so as well :)

Last thing: I watched a movie last night called "Evidence". It's an indie horror/thriller and actually very good, with some nice twists in the plot along the way. The reason I mention it here is that the slasher/psycho-killer character in the movie wears a welder's mask and welder's apron... (laugh) Sound familiar to anyone? I had to wonder if the writers had played the Trilby series ;)

Sure, I admit that it's arrogance that makes me demand answers. Now it all makes sense. But honestly, I really just wanted to know that this community wasn't some evil asshole community that once pushed out one of its designers. How could I ever come here with respect and a feeling of pride in this community if I didn't know?

I've always thought you all just hid the fact that you collectively pushed someone out of the community. I never even thought for a second that you were all just tired of talking about something a decade old.

Now I know.

Plenty of people have moved on from the community over the years, for various reasons, and the only people who remember them (or wonder what they went on to do) are those who were here at the time. Because of his later success, though, Yahtzee's fall from grace, and subsequent exit, has been inflated to mythic proportions. As I only began lurking around the community shortly after the fact, I have little to no knowledge of what happened at the time.

And to be honest, besides a vague curiosity, I've never really given it too much thought. Yahtzee's apology really does tell you all you need to know, if, indeed, you must know.

People leave all the time, sometimes for reasons known only to themselves. While I don't exactly share Mod's fatalistic view, some do just feel like their time could be spent in a more constructive way; which is as good a reason as any.

I've been reading the AGS Forums since 2003 or 2004. I remember when 7 Days a Skeptic was a new game. I remember when Ben Jordan 2 was a new game.

I also remember never seeing whatshisname around, so I've been curious for YEARS. I can't really say this is a new thing I suddenly started wondering about.
