Ok, I had this cool idea. for every post you make, you get AGS cash (like 10 or 20), then when you get enough money, you go to these fake shops on the forums and buy cool little icons to go under your name like teh infamous bluecup(!!!) or perhaps a really small character from the classic adventure games (DOTT,KQ,SQ etc.)
Or buy things in Christopia!
I don't support the idea of getting rewarded for making posts. That will lead to even more irraneous posts being made around here. I would support a "props" type of ability, where if someone makes a post, we can hit a button that says "yes I agree with this post" or perhaps a 'No" button, which would cut down on people making a post that just says "I agree" right below the one above it.
A general props type ability is allowed on the [adult swim] board, but you don't get to turn in the rewards. You click "give props" to any user you seem to like or get along with... and then it turns into a popularity contest by having charts to show whom is most popular. I don't think we need to turn this into a popularity contest. We all know I'm popular, but again, I don't want to allow a system on this board that just perpetuates more posts. It's not like we're hurting for new things to read about on these boards. I think we have one of the best boards on the net. So many active users, a great product to all relate to, and great discussions about adventure games all the way to real world events.
Anything that encourages more pointless posts should definitely be actively encouraged!
However some sort of honour system where people could be awarded points by others for particularly thoughtful or helpful posts, might be worth a thought.
I agree with Pumaman, that was what I was trying to say (im just dumb like that :)) I don't know it was just something different to try on the forums.
CJ & SB-
Yeah, It would make AGS awards for 'most helpful person' in both CL, beginners tech and general tech more honest -- or to say correctly - time independent. I somehow have this feeling that nobody is able to remember good deeds of people which happened much before award time, but in same year
Indeed Inc! I wasn't awarded :( GRRRRRRRRRR!
But what a silly little fun idea this is. Imagine the fights Farlander and Mordalles would have in order to gain more money :D That would be wonderful!
I would also porpose members with more than 1000 post (like me) to get something like store and be able to sell stuff (like posts, or ideas, or backing up). You know like a totally corrupted system :D
I
like
it! :D
This sounds like an awfully good way to fuel the fires of elitism... not to mention petty or childish members (naming no names ::)) unbalancing the system by giving negative props out of spite.
Just my 2 cents.
Make it 4, I don't like the idea of making this site a popularity contest, I like it the way it is. If we don't agree with a statement we can bite our tongue( or should it be our fingers ;D)
or make a post saying what we think. This is a forum, not an MMORPG.
I kind of agree with Flibble. The idea could work if some people wouldn't use it in a wrong way. Which some certainly will, I could bet on it. But as an idea it's quite good. :)
Forums seems to be great as it is now. Out of all the forums I've visited or been on over the internet, AGS forums is the best I've ever had the privlage to be a member of.
Turning it into some kinda "popularity contest" or "AGS ca$h for posting" would most likely turn the forum into crap. But hey, that just my opinion.
10 points each to the previous four posters.

Maybe not for posts but games?
How about (if for games) we make it so people can "pay" points to games they like. Who hasn't wanted to thank Tierra, but can't pay MONEY to them due to the nature of the games . For GAMES, its a good idea, IMHO but what would the points be used for,? Currency is no use if there is nothing to buy.
They already can; there's both the rating system on the games.php page, and the AGS awards.
I wouldn't want people to find out how unpopular I am. Me? It's me! ManicMatt! Whaddya mean "Who?"
lo_res_man has the point. The amount of that special points (or "cash" if you want) should be displayed next to the title of the game and all of them (games) might be also sorted by "popularity" in the right category.
It could be even better than the rating system (based on answering to some questions) or awards (given from time to time), as everyone would be able to see the number just after the title.
This sort of idea makes life more difficult for those of us who really are superior :=
An idea from an idea: Maybe you could get(beside trophiies) some sort of reward for compos eg. a screw for the coding comp, a canvas for SJ, a pen for the writing comp... .
We shouldn't have awards for posting on the forums, or awards for forum competitions, AGS is not about the forums! We have the AGS awards and they're all that matter.
AGA and Eric were once awarded for something leet they did, and got custom titles.
In the spirit of this, I think we should either implement more random rewards and nifty prizes.
There is more to AGS than the games. The community is great and things like Mittens testify to that. I'm amazed a mittens-attendee like scotch is arguing that. Or maybe my irony filter is off...Ã, ???
The first FOREGOs awarded custom titles to its winners, but not subsequently. Of course many of the original winners decided not to take up the offer...

For what, for doing something l33t?? I don't get it.
I like the forums as they are.

Indeed! Every Saturday evening we could have Title Or No Title, where people could compete for the chance to win a custom title. We could have like 20 boxes, and each one would have a prize in. 19 of the 20 would be prizes like "get thrown into a tank full of angry sharks" and "drop the soap in the local prison's shower room", and 1 would have the Custom Title prize.
Every time you eliminated 3 boxes, The Wanker would offer you a deal whereby you could settle for 1/10th of a custom title and a mild beating, or you could decide to defy him and proceed for your chance to Win Big Or Die.
I'll get to work on the set.
Your imagination is terribly morbid. You are scary.
Why not have a sort of a comitee or jury to decide upon who gets stuff like forum credits, which could be used to... um... buy things?
Stuff like if someone makes a good game they could be given a few dozen credit, or if a n00b dragon locks up Chris in a tower and someone performs extremely heroically in solving illogical puzzles with inventory items they don't have to slay the dragon and rescue the imprisoned princes... and stuff.
Altho, a little recognition for winning a bigger type of competition would be nice, I reckon. There's something little for the AGS awards already - the "Winner of # AGS Awards" text in the games page.
SSH, sure the community and Mittens are great, but I don't think giving your friends points for drawing nice pictures or making a post you agree with is a desirable thing, it makes community a competition. There's really no benefit to any of the ideas along those lines, they'd only make the place less good... as far as I can see. More random titles is fine though!
Why don't the moderators control it? Say for a MAGS competition, when everyone votes and the winner is chosen, he will get some points for winning the MAGS competition. I think this would make more people participate.
EDIT: I don't know if you've noticed it, but the May MAGS has I think maybe 2 people participating. Maybe it's the topic of MAGS, maybe it's just bad luck, but still thats not alot of people.
Or maybe it's because it's the ninth atm and there's almost 25 days to go.
I completely agree with Scotch on this. Internal competition is not what we need, especially if we wish to keep the friendly atmosphere as it is. I wouldn't like people showing off with points as I don't like the trophies. I'm sure both are fair ideas, but still, a bit pointless imo.
No sooner had star rankings gone out of fashion than they had come back to haunt us....
I don't beleive in this idea very much. I think the competition winners icons are great, but kudos for thoughtful posts, being a nice bloke (or lass) or having a big penis doesn't need graphical reward. You should learn to remember these traits about people. So I agree...don't!

Hey Cj havent you heard of karma points I think its in the SMF 1.7 update why dont you use that?
People can be rewarded by posting helpfull posts and crits etc they can even be flamed for making crappy posts!
One word - competition.
Two words - not needed.
Karma points sound pretty cool, but is it really something you'd look for in an adventure game forum?
I guess I agree with you mods. Maybe its just not needed.

I don't know about you, but that last trait is something I'd rather not have to learn or remember about people, as much as I like you all.
We have competitions, albiet they're light-hearted and stuff, so maybe some kind of stupid little title under a persons avatar would make people happy? I know we have a hall of fame where various compo winners are listed, but what if, when you win something, the text under/over your avatar could say "C+A Winner"?
Not that I mind either way, I'm just putting an idea "out there". :-*
I've noticed that this hasn't really become much of an issue until the whole hooplah started with giving awards for the sprite jam. Now everyone wants recognition for every little thing done, and isn't it always the way of things to spiral from reasonable to to ridiculous? Personally, I don't need any visual recognition in a forum to tell me I'm okay.
I've got AGA for that.
Yeah. All this "Award for this! Award for that! Recognition for this! Points for that!" stuff I find silly. I even thought that prizes for Sprite Jams was a bad idea. Something I'd much prefer is making posters searchable with this stuff. If I needed help with sprites for a game, I could search for all users with "Character Art" icon under their name, and then look through for those who are actually serious about their claim by seeing if they've won any Sprite Jams, game awards, last active dates, etc.
This would be more useful too, considering the purpose of AGS.
They should give out prizes for making script modulesÃ, ;D
While we're on the subject of things to encourage people to make pointless forum posts:
The award hassle for sprite jams and such is in my humble opinion just silly.
That reminds me. OROW is the least recognised bigger competition. The ATC winners got something, I don't remember what, and if it still exists out there, MAGS is a thing of it's own, AGS awards need no mentioning, but OROW is just a locked thread sunk somewhere in the C&A forum and a few games among the short games getting put down for being too short in the short games category...
Not that it has something to do with this.
OROW games aren't too short to put in the short games section at all, that's exactly where they should be put, just put on a warning about the super shortness if you want. As I've probably said before, OROW was not originally conceived to be a competition, but I don't think there's any harm in voting on the entries, and it seems to get some people more motivated.
Speaking of which, OROW 4, if we do it on schedule, will be on the 22nd of this month, hopefully there will be enough interest to make it worth doing.
Now that CJ mentioned some kind of show, I'm wondering if it would be possible to take it to the next level.
What I mean is, could that be done live, in an AGS game?
Could the TCP/IP plugin do the job?
Imagine a set with a character you've drawn (or more probably, asked someone to draw it for you) playing a quiz with a live host, controlling him directly from your PC with a live audience that claps and shouts witty remarks (as in: You idiot, you drew yourself three hands! ...or something similar).
That would be a nice and cozy kind of way to participate in the award give-away program.
Actually, the set could be used for all kinds of occasions; AGS Awards, .... err I'm out.
Think about it,
peace.

You know, we could compromise though and give each member a graphical penis under their avatar and make it longer in certain occasions, competitions, awards etc. ;)

Yeah and then everybody's pissed at me whenever I post because this image under my avatar screws up the whole forum layout and right border...
And what'd the female members think about having such a graphical presentation by their name..?

Yeah, I get that a lot :(
hmmm, then make it boobs for females. the longer the penis, the bigger the boobs... Why? because they both mean the world to us men.
Initially, I planned to propose for the grand-slam winners of the competition forum to get some sort of special titles.
Anyhow, what I meant to finish my previous post with (after the "either" clause) was to say "or get rid of them entirely", as I find it strange that only two members should be awarded custom titles and no else.
Especially when those two happen to be genuine crooks.
PS:
Thanks SSH for finally pushing me out of the leet-league :)
