Title: Alternative for Stickam
Post by: LUniqueDan on Mon 05/01/2009 22:28:46
 >:( Now, I'm seriously fed up.  >:(

After the last roomcrash, I tried to join 3 times in a row, end up with an htlm coded page, and now ain't no room anymore.

I know, I know, it's been 6 months that we bitch against Stickam, but now let's find an alternative.

So, anyone know any FREE vidchat site that we poor agsers can use to procrastinate instead of doing games?

Please?

Find a new home for Boyd.

Pleaaaaaaaaaaase?

Let Sylvr' / Pilf / Spacegirl get PMed by Randumbs more efficiently.

Anyone?

http://www.paltalk.com/express/

It is beta, mind you.

I'll try it and see if it is worth the hassle.

the no download version is mostly obscene

Skype would be a good alternative, but again, you have to download the client.

Stickam have actually made their API available for everyone to download at http://www.stickam.com/api.do?sknewsltrref=200812 so now we could make our own stickam :D
somehow...

And we wouldn't get funny randoms like the creepy masked dude who came in today.

So we can only have 10 people in a room at once and it seems the only veiwable content is if you go live on the stickam site. :-\

Hey I was jocking!  ;D This thread had like 9 posts when I posted the "Move this to popular threads"; how could I SERIOUSLY ask it to be moved to pop threads?

I find amusing that I had to explain it...  :)

It's great to see the forums are off to a healthy, spam and troll free (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=36449.0) start for 2009.

Getting back on topic, we're not alone in our quest:

Googling (http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=it&q=stickam+alternatives&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8) you get

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=577320&topic=46989615
http://dreamtheaterforums.org/forum/index.php?topic=19500.0;wap2

even a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPT3loa2h1Y)

Bottom line is: no, there isn't (expecially if you are searching for a no-download client), but something is moving.

If you, AGSers who are not stickamers, know something more, let us know ;)

Am I to assume most people would prefer something web-based?  I would, too, but then again I'd happily download something if it was trustworthy and better than Stickam.  LGM mentioned Skype - Is anyone against that? It would do the job.

One of the comments in Bici's youtube link above had a URL for a place called Paltalk... (http://www.paltalk.com/) It is for download.  It says that it supports video conferenceing for 10 people.  That might just mean 10 webcams, maybe more people are allowed in to the chat box... but to be fair I've pesonally never seen as many as 10 people in an AGS Stickam room anyway.

Paltalk looks great. I went ahead and signed up and created an AGS chat group. Anyone wanna test it with me, feel free:

Oh wait, they have an express version of the client that you can do in browser. This looks promising, guys.

Nah, Paltalk is free to join, but askpeople cash in order to see or use a cam.

And it's quite expensive.

BTW, according to the extremely high number of rooms related to 18+ sex chats, Paltalk is more a cover for that business than anything else.

EDIT: oups LGM didn't see you posting, AM I wrong?

EDIT2: can't find your room LGM, olny one from Progz 28-12-08

www.tokbox.com is looking to be a suitable candidate
Title: Re: Alternative for Stickam
Post by: LGM on Tue 06/01/2009 23:17:21
ToxBox doesn't let you open a room, people have to be invited to a conference.
Title: Re: Alternative for Stickam
Post by: IndieBoy on Tue 06/01/2009 23:25:03
Yeah, but once we have quite a few people as a friend we just have to wait until two AGSers are online at the same time, start a chat, then copy the link like we normally do.

Tokbox allows you to post a chat url that anyone can join.

I'm sorry, it could be that I am really tired, but Tokbox really confuses me. I don't like how it takes over my msn when I log in, even though I thought I removed that option from my profile, either.

Well anyone want to do a TokBox trial?
Title: Re: Alternative for Stickam
Post by: LUniqueDan on Wed 07/01/2009 07:44:12
We tried yesterday. It was ok. I mean no lag /crashes.

It's surely strange that there's no 'rooms' per se and auto-resize windows, but it did the job.
I dunno.

Anyone else wanna share his Non-Sticky experience?
Title: Re: Alternative for Stickam
Post by: IndieBoy on Wed 07/01/2009 16:23:18
Shows a lot of promise but there are some little things that could improve it. However it doesn't kick and you can talk to anyone registered or not. Of course there are a few little laggy bits, but they don't last more than a couple of seconds and are only experienced by you and your connection. Still got to get used to it, but it is far better than stickam.

I like it and will use it instead of stickam because I am sick of randumbs and all the disconnects.  That is all.

Okay, I believe I've set it to stop taking over my msn.... I might want to give this a try again now.

you can stop it doing that by removing it from your IM accounts, I had to do that earlier because it decided to sign me into msn while i was already signed in therefore signing me out.

I like having randoms. Most of them are good for a laugh, and sometimes there are quite interesting and intelligent people. The annoying ones can just be kicked. The crashing is the only problem I have with stickam. Tokbox seems a bit more complicated to use, but its probably just coz i'm new to it. Also a lot of features are missing in tokbox but that may still change aswell. I'm gonna continue to use stickam along with tokbox for some time.

The conference links for tokbox are interesting.  They still seem to work if even one person from the original conference is online, so technically the 'room' can last for quite awhile.

Where is the 'Enter' button for typing messages? :(

there isn't an enter button, you just click on the part where it says 'type here' and then press enter after you've typed what you want.

Drag the whole chat window to the top of containing win, that should do the trick.

http://www.chatablanca.com/ looks quite good.  unfortuanltely the same thing that won't let me into stickam won't let me use this either, but it might be fun for those of you you can.
Title: Re: Alternative for Stickam

I tried chatablanca and here are some impressions:
- seems quite chaotic at first, but i found my way around all the functions pretty quickly
- full of gimmicks. you can buy "coins" for real money and then use those coins to buy accesoires
- the text chat is quite different. the rooms look like this:
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z69/space_boy_album/chatablancasample.png
the camspots are movable and your messages appear in a speech bubble next to your camspot. new messages are accompanied by a "bloop" sound which can be turned off. and you can display a message history.

- there doesnt seem to be a way to post a link to the room. but when youre logged in you can search for a user and enter the room they are in. or when you have some friends added you can enter their room from your friends list.

anyone wanna try that out later?

I'll give a try later today.

In case anyone wants to try, I'm on there right now and i will probably be for the rest of the day so just do a search for "spaceboy". So far it seems functional, although I hate that kiddy sticker album look.

In other news, stickam is remarkably stable today and immune to jinx.

Well, I've found something I don't like even before I finished signing up: It discriminates against those of us with nicknames under 6 letters!  :o

...I'm sure I'll think of something.

Edit: So there are no lack of randoms here...
