Title: Any suggestions where to go?
Post by: Pessi on Tue 01/11/2005 18:37:27
Hey everyone!

I've been away for quite a while from the forums. I've been lurking though every now and then but haven't logged in or written anything cause for me it takes a while. :)

Anyway, to cut a long story short. I'm thinking of quitting my job to pursue my real interests in life such as art and music and stuff. In fact, I thought I would move somewhere else for a couple of months. I first got the idea from the fact that my friends were in Spain a couple of months and they were going to stay for the winter, so I was going to join them there. However, they ran out of money and came back, so that's not such a definite option anymore.

So, does anyone have any suggestions where to go? I'm thinking some place warm but not a tourist trap. Is there a place you've been that you would definitely like to go again? Or maybe it's your home town? :)

Of course this is only half-serious and nothing definite, but I'm just kind of trying to discover my options. I was thinking it might be cool to go somewhere like Florida and even look for a school, but they might be too expensive for me, at least without getting a job. Does anyone have insight on this?

Kemi sounds like the perfect choise for you! It's always cold here and it's a tourist trap on winters when The Snowcastle is built! :=

Hey Pessi, nice to hear from you!

Sounds like a nice plan, though it could easily become very expensive if you can't get a job. But yeah, I must admit I too have been thinking how cool it would be to live somewhere else, even if for a couple of months.

Heh, I have only ever been to one really warm place and that was Greece. Sure it was a nice place, but Athens might be a bit too much of a tourist trap. I dunno, I really have no idea about a nice place to live either, but I just wanted to post something. :P

Anyways, nice to see you again, and keep us updated. :)

Heh...and just the other day I was wondering  where the Hoagie dude with the incredibollocks art skills went. Great to see you!

Travelling is always fun. When I got bored with my summer holidays (luckily I didn't have a job at the time. I wouldn't have been able to quit it), I packed by backpack, chose a direction and started trekking. It was the cheapest form of travel, and North of here is  a reasonably hilly area, so I got my sense of "adventure" too.

If I get the house with ScubaChic, you're invited to come and stay in Maryland. That is, if you don't mind living with a bunch of volleyball college girls and going with me to a respected college. UMBC has a fantastic graphic arts program that has a respected name attached that companies really do look for.
I'll even reduce your room cost if you do art for my games.  ;)

Come to Iowa so we can hang, dude. Then we can frollick in the soy bean and corn fields together 'till the cows come home. I promise you, there's no better place then Iowa... So you "'ought to give Iowa a try."

If you're looking for a college... You could try Clark, Coe, Northern Iowa or the big 10 school, University of Iowa (where I am going.)

Dude, do NOT QUIT your JOB. If anything, start working half-time, trying to establish a job in your field of expertise.

And don't move, because then you must find a job to work half-time on while trying to establish a job in your field of expertise.

Great skills ain't shit, all you need is contacts and openings. You hand your work out, and you don't even get an answer unless you literally walk in to an editors quarters asking in his face. Which is a quite nice way of doing it actually..

Yea, that's about it.

Australia. Beautiful, job opportunities, and it's in the southern hemisphere. You want warm weather, the rest of the world (apart from Africa and S. America) is approaching Winter now.

Another suggestion: Save some money and have an awesome holiday next summer in Benidorm, Spain, with some of the neatest people around.

Yeah our beaches are cool our chicks are hot 2.

And then there is our cheap currency... Altough capetown is a tourist destination.
There is always JHB but the traffic will kill you and no beach, I'd go for Pretoria!
But then again tourist dont bother me so CAPE TOWN!

Dude, do NOT QUIT your JOB.

Dude I solidly agree here... If you dont have a rather nice little (BIG) nest egg to mess
around with. Keep it cut your hours like 2ma2 said and develope your talent and send
out your portfolio.

There is always create a passive income option, then you can do art until you are blue
(maybe its the paint :) ) And still live... Your choice you choose. Have fun!

Good luck in what ever you decide!

Thanks for the replies!

Scummbuddy, volleyball college girls, that's what I'm talking about! Heh. Is the graphic arts program like one part of the studying program or is it like a dedicated thing? Also, how much does that kind of thing cost generally and how many years is it?

Kinoko, Winter's one of the reasons I want to go some place warm. I wouldn't want to go through another winter here. :P

2ma2, you're right about that. I know that would be the safe bet. However, I'm looking for something different now because now I'm not really bound to anything. I'm sure there will be time for settling down and getting a permanent job and doing all the reasonable stuff. Right now I just want to get out. I don't want to plan for the future. It may not be smart but it's what I want to do. Playing it safe is the only thing I will regret.

A few of my friends are also probably going, so we can rent an apartment and each pay our share so we'll save in that. We'll just have to decide on where all of us would want to go. :)

I'll have a look at what South Africa has to offer too. I didn't really think of that at all. Thanks Zor and Afflict!

I was actually supposed to be in South Africa, somewhere along the east coast but more inwards, in an exchangeprogram with my Uni. Half a year or a whole year in art school. Might be worth checking out but I can't remember the name on the SA uni..
