Can I modify the AGS editor to put like Bible verses in it?

I downloaded SSH's special Christian version, Thank you for all the work, SSH! He made a from scratch font himself and other stuff. I was wondering if I can put some finishing touches on it, like when it says something about Larry Vales in it or just XQXQXQ filler, when you start it up, instead I could put Bible verses so when Christians start it up, it will give them Bible verses or something. CJ says to ask in the forums in the help file.

AGS is a powerful engine!  :)

I happen to be Christian but your past/current behavior seems to border on zealotry.

I'm not trying to be a prick about this but AGS is a game making utility, not religious software.

SSH

I hacked the AGS Editor exe with XVI32 by searching for the strings that pop up with a Unicode search. You can then use the editor to change it to strings of the same length with little risk, but if you start changing the lengths of strings you risk breaking the editor.

Make sure you back things up before trying this.

But, as Progz says, if you want bible verses, go and google for a free bible software... its not as if the splash screen is up for long.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised that a devoted Christian would like to hack other's programmes. This is even more illegal than using the SQ4 font. :P

It's all fun and games with harmless bible verses then it's this and before you know it we're all speaking chinese.

Since when is using a hex editor illegal?

It's not, but the action of hacking other's programmes is, at least ethically. :P

It's illegal to modify a copyrighted work and distribute the modification.  The "Christian" version of AGS is clearly an illegal derivative work.  By the hacker's own admission that it was modified using a hex editor without the author's prior permission.   ::)

SSH

Errr, that depends on the licence under which the copyrighted work was distributed, of course...

Still, it's ethically incorrect to do this, unless you have the permission of the author, or it's written explicitly in the programme's documents that you can do that, or the programme is so aged that it falls into public domain and allows fair use. :P

Also, CJ has voiced recently that he won't support hacked versions of his programmes.

SSH

Oh well. In that case he can edit the file himself which avoids the hacked distribution problem. Of course, the supportability of the hacked version has no bearing on its morality.

First of all, I think one or more of you may have been too harsh on SSH.  He has been kind and helpful when some others weren't.

So... I already downloaded the Christian version of the AGS Editor. Is it legal for me to keep it?

I have downloaded the XVI hex editor. Is it legal for me to replace text in the Christian version of the AGS Editor?

What do the wise people say?

What do the other Christians in this forum think?

There didn't seem to be any all rights reserved in the copyright notice, does that mean anything?

Maybe I should just wait and see if Mr. Jones will release a Christian version...

I can be debugging my own Adventure engine in the meantime...

Darth Mandarb

God just told me that it's a sin [illegal] to post on the AGS forums.

It's anti-Christian.

Santiago, seriously I'm a Christian also but this is utter nonsense. The Christian version of the editor? Having that font and/or MP3 support does not make the editor 1) illegal, 2) unethical, 3) immoral, or 4) send you to Hell when you die because you looked at the font.

SSH was kind enough to provide you with a modified EXE in the hopes that perhaps this foolish reign of terror would come to an end. Clearly it has not. I honestly don't know if you're trying to be serious or if you're just shooting for the 2009 Annual Attention Whore/AGS Troll-of-the-Year Award.

There is absolutely no need for the subtitles on the splash screen to be replaced with quotes from the Bible. It's absurd to request such a thing. Let me ask you this, does your web-browser have a special feature which pops up a Bible quote for every page you view? Does it replace all Google Ads with Jesus Tags? That might be a bit sacrilegious, but that's between me and my God.

There's nothing wrong with being Christian. There's nothing wrong with believing in and loving God. But when you become so extremist as demanding that someone provide you a version of the editor with all non-religious text replaced with Bible quotes...I just don't know what to say to that.

You know, I'm just reminded of religious suicide bombers. They believe that what they are doing is right. To them, what they are doing is pleasing to their God. But how could a loving God demand the mindless slaughtering of innocent civilians? I'm not trying to make this a religious debate, however when you go around flinging your own beliefs in everyone's faces and telling them how wrong they all are and how they're all going to burn in Hell because AGS doesn't have quotes from the Bible?

I'm not perfect. I know my own sins. But honestly Santiago...I pity you.

Not polite.
You should have *at least* the author's agreement with your plan anyway.
Then I still really do not understand the purpose of your mission...

AsimosVagan

Santiago, let me tell you a bit of advice:

The problem is not your religion, the problem is the way you choose to write your posts here. You already understand that even christians (at least two) do not like what you are saying.  So you could achieve everything that you want, without ramblings and fuss by not telling people that you are a christian.

  Examples:

   1) Instead of saying that you do not want to commit sins, you can say: I would like to have a clean version of AGS because I don´t feel comfortable with the idea of breaking rules.
   2) Instead of calling "Christian Version" you could call it "AGS Purity" Version, the name that SSH wrote in his blog.
   3) Instead of asking "How can I put some bible quotes...', you can say: "I would like to put some motivational/fun quotes..."

That way you would avoid everything that you are reading here.

But, perhaps, you are far more intelligent than you wrote in the other post and all this discussion is exactly what you want?

I think we are being had.  I doubt Santiago is a Christian; more likely a horny 14 year old trying to make Christians look bad.  Memo to self: "Stop feeding the troll!".

Yes, absolutely. AGS version 8.0 will be downloadable in different versions to suit all tastes -- including a Christian Edition, Muslim Edition, Athiest Edition, Star Trek Edition, Matrix Edition and all combinations of the aforementioned.

However, it might take a while to get all the development done, so I suggest that in the meantime you go back to debugging your own engine. Pop back in another 18 months to see how things are getting on.

I'd go with "No, fuck off!" but you wouldn't get the reference and thus just would get offended.

Christianity is really the siliest religion to go extreme on. All you can do that way is harm yourself really. You're not going anyplace by harming others, but by torturing yourself with foolish obidience to rules impossible to follow. And in the process you'll just be doing some level of harm to others, thus willingly hurting others and going to Hell anyway. Christianity is a very contradictory religion, no matter which way you look at it. So look at it from a point of view where you do the least harm and have the best possible time yourself.

I'm eagerly waiting for the Crowley quote to show up then, btw.

As a matter of fact, my web browser is special, it's Opera, with image block and a special FlashBlock installation thing. I would recommend it to others.

All of you, have a good day.  :)

If some of you want to make fun of me, go ahead. Jesus said if someone slaps me on one cheek to let you hit the other also. I just thought I could put some finishing touches on the one that SSH made, but there was questions on the legality of it.  ???

There was never, ever, ever a legitimate question about the legality of the AGS Editor. Period, full stop, end of sentence, etc., so on and so forth.

I'm not trying to make fun of you Santiago. "Making fun" is when you say something about/towards someone at their expense for your own amusement. Everything I, along with most of the others here, have said was said with one purpose in mind: To make you recognize the extremist absurdity of every sentence you write, and if humanly possible to try and bring this insanity to an end. Peacefully if such a thing could be so.

It is clear at this point, whether you are serious or not, you are beyond the realms of all logic and reason, and nothing that can be said will make you accept anything aside from your own distorted opinions.

I could say quite a few harsh things if I wanted. But, to do the Christian thing...I won't. I will simply bid you adieu. Hopefully another 18 months will serve you well.

Alright, people. I think we get over this already and there's no point in arguing about this anymore. Further discussions are not necessary as we will only go in circles again. As Pumaman promised, we are sure that this issue will be settled in 18 months. (and we will have AGS V8.0 AND a Christian version then)

So, to quote our last Governor:

ManicMatt

I don't know, I'm quite curious as to how his logic works. Stealing a font seems to come from a law created by man, so does God follow the laws created by man too? Or is it in the 10 commandents?

"Thou shall not steal a font from thy neighbour"

And say someone smoked in public places when it was legal, but then the law was changed in the UK so it's not legal. Does this mean they were sinning all along or only sinning because the government says so?

Nikolas

I would very much like it to be lock time... then again I'll confess that I'm having fun here...  :-\

Oliwerko

I am daily reading Santiago's posts and I still don't get how someone can be so extreme and not seeing it. I am a christian (kind of), but being extreme with torturing yourself and others with stupid requests or recommendation is simply dumb. Seriously, I don't get how someone can think that this ultra-mega-font-theft is something that harms your conscience. I personally do what I believe is right and try not to do things that I believe are wrong. All this "Jesus told xyz and Jesus saves blah blah" and "going against our faith sends us to hell", "I am a sinner, oh forgive me" stuff seems to me like plain shortsighted misinterpretation of what belief is about and only staying extreme about "Jesus says". (No offence to anyone, not Santiago, neither Jesus)

I was going to write something, but Matt wrote exactly what I wanted to with that law things.  ;)

Anyway, what I see is just one person horribly wrong about what faith is.
Personally? I hate it. Sorry.
