Title: Cover songs thread
Post by: Steel Drummer on Mon 04/06/2007 02:44:30
Howdy! I've recently been listening to The Police, and I have a lot of their songs stuck in their head. My band and I just finished a cover of one of their tunes and I thought I'd post it (and any other covers we do, in the future). This thread can also be used to talk about cover songs in general...

Roxanne

Don't worry, the sound quality on this cut is much better than the quality than in that other song I posted. We still have a lot to work on in this song (mainly the chorus is sucky, and the drumming is a bit off, plus there is absolutely no mixing or mastering that had been done on this version). This song is really unfinished, but I thought I'd share it anyways.

So... enjoy, and tell me what you think!

And please try not to be too negative *gaggh-Helm-gagghcoughblechhh*

Can I comment? Ok. I think you should try to listen to other players more since it's a band thing. You're quite off the beat a couple of times, and I don't mean anyone specific, but it sounds like you're playing a different song at times. It takes a while to get the rythm, but it's really important. Listen to the other players. :)

What Tuomas says really. The sync and timing is rather off, most of the time. But the sound is not so bad really. I mean, yes it's nowhere near professional or whatever, but who cares, plus everything sound clear enough.

I was actually hooping for some singing and voice and all that, but nya... :p never mind though

My band cover a couple of meat puppets songs in our set. I could get a rough mix online if people are interested.

Oh yeah, I'm interested! POST! POST!

(I think I should have... somewhere a version of "creep", by Radiohead, with me singing  :-[ But really need to search hard to find it...)

Ehehe, wonder why I didn't check this thread before. I did a punky cover of Where's my Mind by the Pixies a year or 2 back and redid it with soemwhat more proper drums recently.

Where's My Mind (http://www.danwa.net/junk/Fixage%20No!/05%20-%20Fixage%20No!%20-%20Zero%20Production%20Value%20-%20Where%20is%20my%20Mind.mp3)

Warning: it's definitely by my own interpretation of the song, so don't say it's not exactly like the original because that's how I 'wrote' it ;)

EDIT:

We still have a lot to work on in this song (mainly the chorus is sucky, and the drumming is a bit off, plus there is absolutely no mixing or mastering that had been done on this version).

Relatively speaking, the guitar was off more than the drums. The drums and bass kept quite close together but the guitar kinda wandered the rythm a bit.

But the advice already given is good advice - listen to each other. If all else fails (in my old band we used to do this) let the drummer/bass player play through the entire song together until they've got the rythm rigth and know what to expect from one another, then add guitar :)

A mate and I made this  (http://www.hollowheads.dk/upload/Powergeil%205000%20-%20Angels%20Crying.mp3) cover of E-Type's "Angels Crying".
Purely for fun... We're not fans if that's what you think ;D

And for those who do not remember/know the agony that is E-Type here is the Original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53JZop4iiIg).

Heh, it works quite well as metal :D

Steel Drummer - Yeah, the sound quality is pretty good. Like everyone else has said, make sure you guys are working as a team.

Voh - Yeah man! Had me tapping my foot along. Reminds me of the stuff I used to listen to in high school man. Good work.

Boney - Man, consider me a fan. So much better than the original, IMO. Of course, I like metal, but yeah man - who needs all those whacky techno sounds when you can have harmonised lead guitar? I'm very impressed.

A half-baked attempt at Johnny Cash (http://tiki.sitesled.com/walktheline.mp3).
I think the voice improves towards the end.

Edit:  thanks Ben, but not looking for serious crit here

Actually, Boney, I'm sharing this MP3 with my friends (who're all powermetal fans) and the verdict so far is 10 out of 10. You've got something here, so the question is, of course.. Any more Powergeil 5000 songs? *snickers at the name*

;D Powergeil isn't a real band and I'm afraid I havn't got more songs with lyrics recorded or proper sounding drums, but here are some more tracks:

mexican hat dance (http://www.hollowheads.dk/upload/Powergeil%205000%20-%20Power%20Hat%20Dance.mp3) and
Night of fire (http://www.hollowheads.dk/upload/Powergeil%205000%20-%20Night%20Of%20Fire.mp3) by Hinoi Team (unless thats a cover too).

And just for comparison a song by the band I "sing" in for real:

Bloodlust

Boney - You're the man. +respect dude. Bloodlust vocals are mean as hell. And the hat dance.... speechless. *kneels*

Tiki - Dude - is that you singing? And you're 16? Seriously dude, sing in your natural style, give the song your own flavour. Otherwise whats the point of covering the song? You've got the guitar parts cool, and the singing is fine, except I still think it would be better if we heard your own voice.

I'm interested. I do enjoy Meat Puppets a great deal. They're one of the few bands that I have interest in covering myself.

Some awesome covers here.

SteelDrummer: Other than a bit of an off-tempo, it sounds really good. Could have fooled me for a B-Side take.

Voh: Cool cover. It keeps it's Pixies' feel, but with the punk style.

Boney: Some sweet metal right there. I've never really liked dark vocals like that, but the rhythm and everything is crazy awesome.

Tiki: Heh, I liked this cover. Sort of like Muppet Johnny Cash.

I did this short cover a while back of a Bob Dylan cover of Eric Von Schmidt's cover of the folk song "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down". I've always felt that covers should be different from their original version. I couldn't find a video of the acoustic version which I based my cover off of, but you can find it on Dylan's self titled album. The biggest difference (other than being less bluesy) is the time change.

I'd post the link to my old cover of an old Jesus Jones song "Nothing to hold me", but who here has actually heard the original?

Steel Drummer, how were the drums recorded? Is it an electronic kit?

No, we added some reverb, etc. to the kit.
