Title: Fired
Post by: SSH on Tue 17/06/2003 16:05:37
I've been fired from my job becuase of that picture c.leks posted

Seriously, though, if I wanted to see that kind of thing, I wouldn't come to the AGS Forums and that will have been placed in the logs and might be used against me.

ScottishHero:
I hope you are joking.

Besides, I've corrected the problem.

This teaches people important lessons:

a) Surfing the forum at work isn't wise

b) Preview posts before sending them

c) Women with penises can look VERY VERY UGLY

I did DG, the two look the same, the picture I posted (the one I saw anyway) had nothing graphic about it...

Heh, this sort of thing is why I don't browse the web at work.

Of course, not having internet access at work might be another factor. ;)

SSH? Fired?
Don't you think your boss overreacted?

I guess that's what you get for looking at a forum instead of doing your job..

That sucks, though. Hope you can find a new job soon.. Or talk to your boss and explain.

From the "seriously though" in the original post, I doubt he was really fired.

QuoteDon't you think your boss overreacted?

Internet access at work is heavily regulated stuff, not by the boss but by the IT department. Because the company can't have the possibility of being seen to do anything illegal, accessing anything even remotely dodgy can land you in trouble.

In this country last year, more people were sacked for internet misuse at work than for everything else (incompetance, racism, etc) combined.

At the end of the day, the simple answer is, don't use your work connection for anything that's not work-related. With more and more companies tightening up their procedures these days it's the only safe thing to do.

Just make sure not to get too engrossed in it, when in computer class. I was in an computer literacy class that everyone is reuired to take, and so it was really boring because I knew most of the material. So during recetation I would just go here, however, keeping an eye out for the teacher and what the class was doing. That way when he walked to the back of the class to see what everyone was doing, I minimized this, maximized that, and was never outed.

Yeah, guys I'm pretty sure he wasn't actually fired.  I think he was just trying to make the point that people shouldn't post things like that (and yes, I know it was just an accident  :P) and he could have been fired had his boss seen it.

Although you think if his boss saw that, he would have seen the fact that he was on these boards and not doing his job like he should be anyways, but that's another matter ;)

Just to clarify something, c-leks didn't actually post that particular image.

He posted an image of a guy putting on a glove.

However, SomethingAwful have configured their system so that anyone hotlinking images from their site gets the offending image instead.

And there was no way he could have warned anyone.

And think about it -- would a moderator purposely post stuff like that?

Besides me.  ;D

Or Mods. ;D

Or AGA. ;D

And maybe Gilbert. ;D

Perhaps SomethingAwful should rethink this system if it's causing not-so-innocent people to cause so-innocent people to lose their jobs...

I tried to post one of the Photoshop Phriday pictures on a place I used to go to.
I think I got kicked out, but I'm not sure because I've never gone back since.

Heh, I  get in trouble at school for surfing the net when I should have been studying but if I'm caught I just tell them that I'm in the Sociology class doing a project on group conformity and I'm trying to find a church site.

Truthfully man, you can't really blame anyone for stuff like that when your at work. It's the nature of the internet....If your not prepared for stuff like this to happen, then you shouldn't surf at work.

my boss thinks it's okay to visit this place once in a while :)

I have a great boss :)

Just so you guys don't worry, I was joking. I still have a job. Your concern was touching, though  :'(

I did think it was a bit wierd for a moderator to post that. I'm surprised that our IT guys don't automatically block somethingawful already!

I'm allowed to surf the web and visit sites like these, as long as I get my assignments done before a certain deadline. They don't care.

Maybe everything's so easy because it's the IT department I'm working for. (I *am* the law, or something like that)

Seriously, even my boss is sending me funny (and sometimes X-rated funny) stuff via E-mail. Things are not that strict here. I don't know about the 'normal' people working at our company, though.

Until someone posts a SomethingAwful pic in another forum.

Then you're stuffed, aren't you?  ;D
