Title: Firefox problems
Post by: DanielH on Tue 17/06/2008 23:00:38
I'm using the new release of Firefox 3, But I've noticed this problem for a long time before now. Enlarged sprites in firefox are nigh-on impossible to make out clearly. The image linked to below was taken of the same page, today, at the same time, with the same settings on my computer with two different browsers. As you can see, IE7 shows the sprite clearly but firefox is just rubbish. Can anyone help?

This seems to be a problem in Firefox 3, probably related to the new zoom feature. I didn't know what you were talking about, then discovered I had Firefox two-point-something. After updating, I get the exact same thing. The program just came out, and the issue seems to also affect several Google sites (Google Docs has been reported on the Mozilla forums), so it can only be a matter of days before they release a patch.

Just updated to 3, and I get it too. It's definitely the zoom, as you get the same effect if you enlarge that gif in windows own picture viewer.

Seems that it's a filtering problem with scaled images.
In Opera you can choose to disable/enable the (crap) interpolating filter by messing with the settings in "opera:config" (I seem to remember in older versions it could be done directly from 'Preference' dialogs), maybe FF has a similar option?

I finally have some dirt on Firefox! Wait until IE hears about this!

It is actually a much better type of scaling for most images, especially photos. That's why it's the default. It just doesn't work well with pixel art. As mentioned, Opera lets you configure it. If no such setting is accessible in FF, Opera also just released a new version, so maybe it's time to switch browsers?

Don't let's start an argument. But I have considered Opera for quite a while, and seeing as I see the differences between the two as minor, I'm flipping a coin...

Tails. Opera Download commencing.

Very bad news, it seems to be a bug and not configurable. I hope they will fix it or I will have to downgrade to 2.x

Eh. This "bug" (feature) really only affects sprite artists and sprite art fans (i.e. us). It's not a mainstream concern, hence its existence. I don't consider it a reason to automatically jump ship for another browser. There are so many features of FF3 that make it worth it.

Firefox 3 is almost superior to any other browser I've used thus far, there are a lot of miniscule features which, as I learn them make browsing the internet a really easy and efficient process, even more so than Opera which felt very clunky and overnecessary. If there was just a fix for this one tiny gripe.
