Title: Forum banners
Post by: SSH on Tue 03/07/2007 10:31:15
Anyone else think its time we had some new banners added to the mix? Some shots from games from the last two years?

I thought this topic was going to be about banning people.

Consider me relieved and pleasantly surprised.  ;D

Hudders, how stupid of you to think that.
You're banned for two months.

I wish I could say: "put my game on!" but I haven't really made any. I don't suppose Happy ducky adevnture is graphicly good enough to be put on.  :P

Maybe, art could be submitted, from Games or the Critics lounge.

Put my game on!

Oh wait, I gotta release something, don't I?

I've been thinking the same thing a lot lately. I don't want to sound like a late-comer snob, but I'm not particularly familiar with some of the games on the banners. I feel they could better reflect the quality games produced with AGS and I also think that they could show a good range of graphical styles with a consistently high quality.

Seconded.

Ouch.

Just kidding. Yeah, adding some newer banners to the cycle would make sense. Maybe adding games that won awards or nominations, or got "game of the month" on the games page?

I always felt that the Mind's eye padded cell looked tacked on to that banner.

But yeah, probably time for a change.

I've also asked CJ if he could update the front AGS homepage, with news & possibly a replacement for the two dated games on the front. He says he will do it at some point! The forum banners are great. Is it possible not to make new ones but to make additional ones, and cycle through even more than the 4 or 5 that exist currently? That'd be awesome.

Perhaps the design of the banners could be a competition in the C&A forum

My SQL knowledge is limited, but wouldn't it be possible to manually formulate a query for each banner, so that a click on the banner image takes you to a page displaying those games? Not very convenient maybe... Just a thought...

I think that some of my script modules should be put into the banner. :P

New banners are always fun.

Some games have never been released.

Just to be clear, I didn't mean that as a blanket criticism of the games that are in the banners. I just feel that there are games which belong there that aren't. Putting award-winning games in the banner is a very good idea, because it'll be drawing peoples' attention to games that have proven themselves to be remarkable in one way or another.

I agree, there were a lot of games in the last 1 year and half that earned their place next to Apprentice 2, Mind's Eye, 1213, 7DAS, Emily Enough, KQ2vga and co.

And I don't want to sound offensive but I'm not sure that games that have yet to be released belong on the banners, at least for now. :)

While we are on the subject, what are the games:
Between Apprentice 2 and Mind's Eye?
To the right of 1213?
To the left of Indy and the Crown of Solomon?
Between The Uncertainty Machine and Astranded?

While we are on the subject, what are the games:

Between Apprentice 2 and Mind's Eye?: Woodlands (there's a demo available)
To the right of 1213?: RotN: Time Out (from the trailer)
To the left of Indy and the Crown of Solomon?: Err, I believe you mean the close-up of man's face? It was some game that got cancelled, if I recall right.
Between The Uncertainty Machine and Astranded?: Demonslayer 4.

Here's the similar thread from one and a half years back, by the way: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=24319.0

Also, the Games Showcase could get a little update. Maybe have Sydney Finds Employment and The Infinity String, or something.

I don't agree with the fact that only award winner should be put in banners, i think all ART that is good should be put in the banners, even from critique lounge... and i will try to make one out of that, or two :P

I agree with that. The banners are all about art, not about how great the game is. A game might be fantastic but if it has so-so graphics, why should it be promoted over better works that have for one reason or another not won an award?

EDIT: I'd go further, in fact, and suggest being part of the forum banner as an award in it's own right. Perhaps something to be taken into account while the games in the database are being re-reviewed?

I just want to say that I had nothing to do with the mind's eye banner, and yes, I do agree it looks tacky and poorly presented compared to the rest.  I'd like to see a better version made but what can you do?

Here is one, with images taken from BG competition area:

I have no problem with this as long we are careful to not include good looking average/bad games.

Quote...even from critique lounge...

However, I don't agree about including art from the critique lounge or BG competition. AGS is first about games, I think the banners should promote its best games, not backgrounds and characters that may or may not find their way into a game, nor games that have yet to be released, lest we lure more fans wondering what are the names of all these unreleased games on the banners.

I think there were far enough great and good looking games released in the last year and half to fill all the free slots in the banners, may they be award winner or not, to avoid selling AGS with false advertising. When the games with the screens from the critique lounge will be released, they'll most likely find their way on the banners in the next 1 - 1½ year, in the meantime, let's concentrate on the present last 1½ year, particuliary when the last 2 years represent IMHO the most productive and the most amazing era in the AGS games. I also wonder if 5 banners will be enough to fit all the great games.

Regarding the clickablility of the banners, if we can't manage to get the banners' screenshot, to directly access their respective game pages, why not make the banner a little bit longer and wider and put the name of the games below the screenshots with a 5x5 font?

Banners, schmanners. Although Darth Mandarb's design has served us well, it's been over three years since its debut. Maybe a whole new look is in order?
