I'm writing this as they're announced, but there have been a few winners that have made me very happy -- like:
Best Actor in a Comedy: Bill Murray -- Lost In Translation (YAY!)
Best Comedy series: The Office
Best Comedy Actor: Ricky Gervais -- The Office
Best Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins -- Mystic River
Best Drama Series: 24
LOTR just won best music
And Best Song!
Best Screenplay: Sofia Coppola -- Lost In Translation (Living up to her Dad's good name!)
Now all the hardcore film geeks at the Oscarwatch forums are having an argument over whether LOTR should win Best Drama or not while Michael Douglas wins the lifetime achievement award.
Best Director: Peter Jackson -- LOTR: ROTK (Third time's a charm! ;D )
Best Actor in a TV movie: Al Pacino -- Angels in America (Hoo-haa!!!)
Best Actor in a Drama: Sean Penn -- Mystic River
Best Actress in a Drama: Charlize Theron - Monster (Haven't seen the movie yet, but heard Theron delivers one of the best performances in movie history ever!)
Best Comedy: Lost in Translation (YAY!!!)
Best Drama: LOTR: ROTK (Like I said, third time's a charm!)

And well deserved!!
All in all I was happy with tonight's awards. I would have liked to have seen
somebody from Will & Grace win just because they're becoming the Susan Lucci of the Golden Globes but oh well.
It was interesting (and nice) to see 'The Office' win 2 awards.
I liked hearing Devito talking about the 60's with Michael Douglas ... I can't imagine what those two got into back then!
Ahhh ... memory lane.
Was anybody pissed about any of the awards? Think anybody undeserving won? (just curious) Usually I feel that way at least about somebody at Oscar time ... but that's just me!
In closing, thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press.

I just saw Lost in Translation yesterday (finally) and it was absolutely gorgous. Bill Murray deserved his award, for sure, as did Sofia Coppola. Man, I was pleased with that film.
FINALLY!!! Lord of the Rings gets Best Drama!! I have been waiting for this to happen for so long!! (Yes, the extra exclamation marks ARE necessary :) )
Sure, I loved the last movies that took out best film (The Hours, blah blah, whatever the others were), but I was kinda angry that they got it over over LotR. But that's more to do with my love of the book, rather than P.J's adaption (which is fantastic, nonetheless).
But this year I am truly happy!! But, of course, we all know the Golden Globes is not the LAST big test....
so pray people.... pray...
I wasn't unhappy with anything really this year -- I think all the awards for films I've seen were well-deserved.
Last year, i was very bitter because I hated The Hours -- I found it a depressing film with a very shallow message.
But I think everyone who won seem to deserved their win this year.
Which brings me to my next point: When I was reading the winners on the Oscarwatch forums, a lot of people said that it was the most boring ceremony this year becasue everything was so predictable and there were no surprises (except for Osama winning best foreign film).
However, I think this only furthers the fact that each winner deserved their win because the fact that people can see some frontrunners means that the majority of their views matches the majority of voters' views.
It's different when they say there were surprises but then say a second later so-and-so doesn't derserve it.
Marisa Tomei, anyone?
I hate award shows so I didn't watch. There are way too many of them. One award show is plenty for me. Unfortunately there are way more than one so I don't watch any.
EDIT (didn't think it proper to post again)
The lower post brings up another thing that I don't like about award shows, they make it out like there must be one best actress, one best actor, etc. There are always equivelant actors that don't get any awards, which I believe is the reason there are so many award shows. Johnny Depp is an incredible actor in every movie I've seen him in, and people who get awards over him seem over dramatic in their roles to me.

It's a pity Scarlett Johansson missed on the award, she really deserved it. And with all due respect to Bill Murray (who really was excellent), Johny Depp should have taken that award.
I was rooting for Murray, but a Depp win would be more deserving.
I like Murray's role better because, for me, he gave a little more depth to his character.
That's not to say Deep didn't do a good job -- If Murray wasn't on the list, Depp would be a shoo-in.
As for Johansson, I haven't seen Something's Got To Give yet, so I can't really make that decision.
Though, Johansson was good.
Also, I like awards ceremonies.
Forget all the glitz and glamour and who's-paid-so-much-on-marketing.
It's fun and exciting.
You got five nominees and only one will walk away with the trophy -- It's a tense moment watching it happen!
My favorite thing about it is when you see the person win who you can tell totally didn't expect to win. They get on stage and are struck 'dumb' by the moment.
Now of course, they're actors, so they could be 'acting' like they totally didn't expect to win but hey ...
I also love watching the 'losers' reactions when their name isn't called. The Oscar's coverage does a better job 'cause they split the screen so you can see all the nominees at once and you really get to see all their reactions. (though I put losers in quotes 'cause in my opinion if they're nominated they're not really losers!)
Johnny Depp has been on my 'Under-rated Actors' list for many many years. I've always said Hollywood didn't give the man enough credit. He's excellent in everything I've ever seen him in. (Even Crybaby ... which wasn't a good movie)
You could tell Bill Murray deserved to win because of the 'losers' reactions. They were all on their feet and genuinely smiling and cheering for him. It was heart warming.

Yes, I watched Pirates of the Caribbean last night; Johnny Depp is great. Not just in that movie, but all he has been in. I almost didn't realize it was him.
Edit: Igor, I think you may want to see a movie called "Prozak Nation."

Yeah ... we should
all definately see this movie!!
What the hell happened with Monster anyway, she said in an interview she was naked in pretty much every scene she was in... disappointed = me. :-\
Prozac Nation = VERY HAPPY ME! ;D
The thing that entertained me watching the Golden Globes was Sting. He just looked so, generally displeased to be there. Especially after the person who did the score for the LOTR movies won. As he walked to the stage, he went to give Peter Jackson a hug. As Peter go up, the camera cut to Sting, whispering something in the person beside him's ear. My brother and I laughed for hours on what he might be whispering.
He looked pretty miffed when he didn't win too ;D

Hoorah! The Academy proved not to be an old conservative whore by nominating Johny Depp.
Boo! The Academy proved to be an old conservative whore by ignoring Scarlett Johansson and Kill Bill.
Might fine surprises, especially Depp and Fernando Meirelles -- didn't see that one coming for Best Director.
Pity about Johansson, I agree.
Also, after having a look at the full list, it's great to see Errol Morris up for an Oscar (finally) -- If you've ever seen his often-overlooked doco "The Thin Blue Line", you'll know why!
Another good highlight -- NZ actress Keisha Castle-Hughes up for best actress in Whale Rider!
In fact, all of NZ are really going to be partying! ;D
Also, Barcik, William H Macy didn't get nominated.
Some facts and records broken (from oscarwatch);
* I think Keisha's case is also the first time in my memory that an actor has been nominated in a lead character after being heavily campaigned in supporting and even receiving a SAG nomination for best supporting actress.
* This is the first year since 1994 that all five best actress nominees are in movies not nominated for best picture.
* Keisha Castle-Hughes youngest best actress nominee ever at 13.
* First time ever at least one african american is nominated three years in a row.
* Sofia Coppola is now the first American female ever nominated for Director
* This year, for the first time since 1969, the MAJORITY of the Best Picture nominees have no acting nominations! ROTK, Master & Commander, Seabiscuit -- zip. The last time there were three out of five was in 1969 (Butch Cassidy, Z, and Hello Dolly), and the only other time was in 1962. (It's not fair to compare the pre-1944 years when there were 10 Best Picture nominations.)

I was very disappointed with the 2001 Oscars. I personally, can't stand Halle Berry. I don't know that her performance in Monster's Ball warranted the Oscar but it was just as good a performance as any others in that category with her that year (maybe Judi Dench should have won?)
Denzel should have won ... but not for Training Day. He should have been nominated for his performance in John Q the next year. This was, in my view, a much more moving and powerful performance. Russel Crowe should have snagged his second Oscar for his portrayal of John Nash.
I was disappointed with last year's (2002) Oscars as well. It was too political and didn't feel like the Oscars to me. Hopefully this year certain idiots won't get on stage and abuse their constitutional rights! (NOT intended to start a war ... just expressing my disappointment!!)
Ah well ... this years Oscars are shaping up to be interesting! Here's hoping ;)

Well ... not to me. I'm sure others still cared and maybe even thought she deserved it. I just really don't like Halle Berry, so my opinion may have been skewed a wee bit. Even though I don't like her, I still tried to give her a fair chance.
HA! I TOLD YA! ;D
Man, I couldn't believe when I saw on TV that Cidade de Deus (City of God) had been nominated... we got disappointed when it didn't get nominated last year, cos, AFAICR, it was made in 2002.
I even mentioned this movie as oscar-deseving (look through my last 100 posts and you'll see), you know, it's really good when we get nominated in an america-centred ceremony; I mean, we were nominated for 4 categories (Barcik forgot to mention Best Foreign Film - or whatever you call it - ).
Wish us good luck!
Aye, City of God's noms was a big surprise, but (ironically) these kind of surprises have been happening lately.
Look at last year.
Both Hable con ella (Talk to Her) and Y tu mamá también (And Your Mother Too) were slighted for Best Foreign film by Spain (I forgot which film the ychose), yet both films scored Best Original Screenplay nominations.
Also, Talk to Her not only won Best Original Screenplay, but was also nominated for Best Director.

Indeed, many surprises lately.
But, IMHO, this is really good. Shows us how "the Academy" is 'grown up', opening space for other countries show what they can do. Not only that, but "foreign cinema" is growing too, producing quality films and making its way into the medium.
Let's hope it'll continue like that. ;)
Well, I've looked through it all, and I have discovered the biggest award-related travesty since my two-sentence essay didn't win the She Inspires Me writing contest.
Kill Bill didn't win all of the music awards.
It didn't even win any of them.
Hell, it wasn't even nominated.
HOW?!? HOW, I ASK YOU, IN A SOCIETY LIKE OURS, WITH A RACE THAT CLAIMS TO BE THE HIGHEST FORM OF LIFE ON THE PLANET, COULD FINDING NEMO'S MUSIC BE NOMINATED OVER ONE OF THE BEST GODDAMN SONGS I'VE EVER HEARD?!? I MEAN, HAS ANYBODY HEARD THE KILL BILL THEME SONG? ANYBODY? HOW COULD ANYBODY POSSIBLY NOT LIKE THAT SONG? YOU SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES
Duck, if I am not mistaking, the award is given for original score, and Kill Bill's, despite being bloody superb, wasn't. However, it is very puzzling that the Academy chose to ignore Kill Bill in all techical categories. I mean, it sure deserves Film and Sound editing nominations, at the very least.
Duck: Barcik's right about Kill Bill and the music nominations. To be nominated, a film must have an original score (which Kill Bill doesn't; it was kind of a semi-original soundtrack I guess) or it must have an original song written for it (which Kill Bill doesn't; the so-called "theme song" is by Hotei Tomoyasu and was not written for the film).
EDIT: also, you're comparing Kill Bill's theme song to Finding Nemo's original score. Even if Kill Bill's theme was an original composition for the film, it wouldn't even belong in the same Oscar category as Finding Nemo's score, it would go in Best Song.
Like remixor pointed out, it wasn't written for Kill Bill. In fact, it's not even original. It's an update of a song from Kinji Fukasaku's (the Battle Royale directory) Battles Without Honour and Humanity movies. A song most Japanese know by heart to paraphrase this movie review: http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/anothbat.shtml (http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/anothbat.shtml)
Tonight is Oscar night, whee! It's really nice to see the Oscars with relatively few "locked" categories!

OSCARS TONIGHT!!! WOO-HOO!!!
This is the one night of the year I actually anticipate more than any others! I love Oscar's night.
I just hope this year isn't too political but hey, not knowing what to expect is part of the fun!
Predictions? Hopes?
I wanna see Depp win. He is the one actor I've always loved that the Oscars always snub. The uptight committee doesn't like hollywood's bad-boy I guess!
And, of course, I want to see LotR:RotK win best picture.
Those are the two I care most about.
Oh and MrColossal ... when is your berf-day? I'll send you some mp3 uh'muh boy fiddy cent!
"We goan party like it's yuh berf-day"
Man fiddy cent is soooooo cool. Did you know he's been shot 9 times!!! How admirable!! His poetry is so meaningful.
And Sean Combs performance in Monster's Ball was actually really good, for such a small role. I re-watched Monster's Ball the other night and I must say that Halle Berry, though I still can't stand her, was really good in the movie. FAR better than anything else she's done ... except for maybe The Last Boyscout.

We (Brazillians) never had so many chances to win an Oscar... of course I won't miss the Awards tonight!
And I made a mistake: City of God isn't a nominee for Foreign Language Film.
At first, Academy didn't take it seriously when it stared in the USA for the first time. The critics didn't understand the film, didn't like it and didn't select it as a Nominee for 2003's Foreign Language Film Award.
However, during 2003 Miramax (responsable for the film distribution in the US) made a marketing campaingn distributing it in a larger scale so that it could be nominated for 2004's Awards.
Of course, we didn't expect THAT outcome, receiving 4 (four ;D ) nominations, all in important (at least for us) categories: Directing (for Fernando Meirelles), Cinematography, Film Editing and Writing (Adapted Screenplay).
Of course, our chances of winning are small (although I'd bet in Cinematography and Film Editing), but just the fact of it being nominated in these categories is a great step fou our National Cinema Industry.
Matt Mueller, editor of the "Film Review" magazine, thinks that "City of God" could win the Awards for Editing and Writing, but says it's not too probable.
"The recognition of the Academy shows that Brazillian Cinema can't be restricted to the Foreign Language Film Award. The nomination of Best Director is a proof of how Brazil and Latin America can have international success, as Walter Salles has proved before", says the editor of the "Film Review" magazine.
City of God even features in the imdb Top 250 - Where it started as #223 and is #43, already! ;D
And there's more!
We have one more nomination: for Best Short Film (Animated) with "Gone Nutty" made by a Brazillian animator.
This 76º Academy Awards is something I can't lose!
Wish us good luck! :)

CONGRATULATIONS LORD OF THE RINGS! It has tied Titanic and Ben Hurr for most Oscars (11).
I'll just say, it was well deserved, and about time.
Peter Jackson finally got his best director Oscar!
All in all it was an enjoyable show.
Billy Crystal owns the hosting slot. It was great to have him back.
Seeing Michael Moore crushed by an Olyphant (sp?) was awesome (and I actually applaud him for being willing to do that).
I wanted Johnny Depp to win, but Sean Penn deserved it just as much!
I've said my peace, dm out.
~ d
Yep, it wasn't this time.
But then, we lost most of our nominations for TlotR, and that's ok, right? ;D
But as I said, just being nominated for all these was a big step ahead for us. Let's see what we'll make during 2004. ;)
Sofia Coppola is cute.
apparently she's a bitch, my brother's roommate met her and told the other person they were eating lunch with "don't talk to her anymore." [her being my brother's roommate] while all three of them were sitting at the same table talking.
pointless story but i've had to hear it 20343 times from my brother every time she's mentioned so now i had to yell you!
Oh.
Well, in that case, Liv Tyler was cuter.
Quote from: Trapezoid on Mon 01/03/2004 06:04:03
Sofia Coppola is cute.
Well I thought she was in Lost in Translation, but she looked pretty ordinary when I saw her walk onto the red carpet.
But I loved those pink see through panties she was wearing in the movie, I just hope she had a whole bunch of them, cause it never seemed like she changed clothes.
It was an interesting movie, the first comedy (very slight romantic comedy, with just a lot of teasing, not much romance or comedy, left with a sickly girly happy feeling)
I haven't seen a lot of the movies so I can't really judge whether they were deserved, but I'm not big on relying on the results to choose what movies I'll see, although eventually I'll probably see them whether it be at the movies, dvd or tv.
I'd just like to see a comedy performance win Best Actor one day (I'm sure it's been done) but it seems you have to over act in a Drama to win (oh wait, that's what it's all based on)
The whole ceremony is over acted and really hard to watch, It's actually on Now in our Evening time. I already know the winners so I'll ignore it.
It's just a big party (industry) full of people that still think that it's like when you were coool in school, Well I guess it continues for them so they never grow out of it. Still having silly little relationships with who ever is popular at the time. It's quite sad really.
Anyway, I thought they'd save LOTR until the 3rd, as was predicted
Coppolla directed, so she wasn't in LiT as such.
But Fantasy is vogue this year thanks to LOTR, so why not see a female director.
see, I don't even follow who are the actors & directors, So who was that chick in it, I'm sure I could look it up (Scarlett Johansson [nice arse]), anyway, well done all the people involved, I was surprised Apprentice didn't get a mention.
Essentially reprinted from my post on the AG forums:
I'm probably alone on this on these forums, but I'm kind of disappointed ROTK won as many awards as it did. I was really hoping for Lost in Translation to take Best Picture. I didn't think ANY of the nominations for best director were that great, but I admit I was sort of secretly hoping it would go to anyone except Peter Jackson (¬¬). I was also hoping completely in vain that American Splendor would win Best Adapted Screenplay. Most of ROTK's technical awards were well-deserved, though, as was its original score win.
Fog of War was a good choice for Best Documentary.
I am hugely frustrated that Finding Nemo beat out The Triplets of Belleville for Best Animated Feature. The only way this could be explained is that the members of the Academy who voted on this category didn't SEE The Triplets of Belleville.
I'm not crazy about either of the Best Supporting Actor/Actress awards, although I like Tim Robbins in general.
Basically, these Oscar results were a big pile of crap for me.
What was up with Liv Tyler's hair? Anyway, she had by far the most stylish dress.
Apart from playing fashion police, I too was sorry to see ROTK take all the awards. Not because Peter Jackson didn't deserve an award, but because I'd much rather have seen him get it for Heavenly Creatures. Great to see Sean Penn finally being recognized for his talent.
Why were all the songs absolute crap? Hasn't there been a single decent original song in any movie this year?
Kinda sad how all the big important categories went according to plan, with no suprsing. It's a pity Murray or Depp couldn't snatch that acting award, but without seeing Mystic River who am I to judge?
In fact, I agree with Remixor. In my eyes, Lost in Translation was the best movie of the year, but it was a long shot all along. At least it got a compensation in the form on the Original Screenplay award.
Anyway, congratulations to Return of the King!
By the way, our Movies Channels have launched an Oscar special three weeks ago, and it ended yesterday. During this time, I have seen roughly 20 movies, most of them excellent. Always good to have an excuse to watch good movies, eh?
remixor, perhaps the judges didn't *like* the Triplets of Belleville?
I thought it was nicely animated, but a bit overlong and dull.
I loved Triplets... I dunno if it was a better film than Nemo, but it's a cult classic in the making and since when does that kind of film win? :D
The performance of the song from Triplets was probably my favorite part of the show, too. I think I liked the LotR song the least out of all the songs, although it IS very good.
I'm with remixor on this -- I thought it was a little predictable. No big surprises except for Harvie Krumpet winning best short film.
Like everyone else, I was guessing Destino (Dali, Roy Disney, and everyone being so anti-Eisner -- how could it not win?)
Though, it's good to see an Aussie take out the award -- Oi! Oi! Oi!
And I'm glad Coppola won -- now we can all forget The Godfather Part 3.
I was also sad to see Bill Murray sans Oscar -- Penn also deserved it though.
But apart from the jokes from Bill Crystal, Blake Edwards, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, etc the show was pretty dull compared to previous years.
Just saw Harvie Krumpet, It was entertaining, but the story I thought was a bit thin, had it's moments, I'm sure there was a lot of work going into it as it was animated, but I wasn't as impressed as I was led to believe.
I suppose a whole life story in 20 mins has to be thin. Had a few funny bits, but it just felt way too short. It just felt like it was at the end the whole way with the pace of the life.
I just felt like it was getting started when it ended, (and I knew it had to unless they went into the after life)
The characters where very similar looking to the Simpsons, although made of plasticine or something like that. not too original.
I'm just wondering what it beat to get an oscar, I guess I can look that up, but I'll probably never get a chance to see them anyway.
On the other hand being a short film, I can see why it could win, being a film that had a complete story from birth to death, simple, not too offensive, not too ground breaking (but seemingly ground breaking to Academy types) sweet story with pity being a drawcard also.
still worth the watch
The leading contenders were Disney's Destino and Boundin' from Pixar.
Destine was tipped to win because it started as a collaborative project between Walt Disney and Dali.
The project fizzed, but it was brought back to life by Roy E. Disney.
Plus, if you've been following the recent Michael Eisner vs Roy Disney debacle, you'll see why people were rooting for Destino.
I just saw Harvey Krumpet too -- And I think it won just for the Kamahl cameo.
