I was flicking through the channels on TV this evening and I stumbled upon this very interesting show. It's called White Collar and it is effectively about a conman who was caught by the FBI but then cracks a deal with them to work for the FBI if he is released from prison. I don't know why but while I was watching it, I had a rather strong sense that I'd seen this somewhere before, which I couldn't quite put my finger on...
Oh, and he wears a grey suit and a trilby...
Any of this seem somewhat familiar to anyone else?

Not really, but the idea reminds me of Catch Me If You Can.  Where he is a check fraud conman caught by the FBI, then later released from jail so he could work for the FBI.

It seems to be a con man you have to wear a trilby. Look at any other con man in history, one thing in common: The Trilby.

Btw, what exactly is the difference between a trilby and a fedora?

A fedora is wider, as far as I know. Wiki will help  ;)

Also, it's kinda weird that you post this. I mean, is it that unusual to wear a suit and a trilby? Maybe now, but not about 20 years or something ago.

Phemar

Yep!

QuoteA trilby hat is somewhat similar to a fedora, but typically has a shorter brim, and the back of the brim is distinctively more sharply upturned as a result.

Yea, that guy has a two button suit and Trilby has a 4 button. Trilby also has a dark grey vest, while that guy wears none. Trilby also has a blue tie and his suit is lighter.

Actually in the ep I watched today he wasn't wearing a jacket, but he had substituted it for a black vest instead.

I would probably compare him more to a "Notes" Trilby (who also wears a darker suit), but I couldn't find a pic without a large background attached.

And of course the storyline is noticeably similar to Trilby joining an FBI-esque agency in order to stay out of jail as well (minus the supernatural elements of course).

Furthermore the character has a somewhat "suave and mysterious" way about him, which also reminded me of Trilby.

Stupot

A fedora is what Indiana Jones wears.

That guy looks nothing like Trilby... that's just a guy in a smart suit and hat, haha.
And Trilby's not a conman by trade, he's a burglar and thief.

Yeah, I don't see too much similarity.
Besides, the best conman in the world is John Abagnale from Catch Me If You Can, and he doesn't wear a hat much at all.
"But with a ninja on your face, you live longer!"

Well at least I'm not the only one who thought that, since trilby isn't a conman whatsoever. :P If he were a conman he would have told the people trapped in the mansion with him a different story.
