Due to legal reasons my shop is playing my own music and nothing else. The problem is, I need unsigned music to play! And all I have is my 1 album, playing on repeat! I'll get sick of my own music in no time at all!
I don't own the shop so this problem is out of my hands until the company does something!
So I'm asking you, please give me links to any music you have made that is unsigned, that you give me permission to use in my shop to play in public.
Thanking you in advance!
So why not internet radio?
I'm not sure where to look for an internet station that plays unsigned music, and being at work right now I dont have much time to go searching, but I'd need a radio license for that, I think..?
Then wy not just the local radio station? I'm sure I hear those played all the time, right?
He's made it clear there is a rare stipulation at his workplace.
Yes, shops have radio licenses or a license with PRS and we don't have either at the moment, hence the need for stuff not belonging to record companies. In the meantime we don't have either, so I'm stuck between listening to me and this other unsigned artist. :(
ah yes, of ourse. Well, I'd recommend you tag your guitar or what ever along and play live the whole day :)
Matt, there is this website called Google. I just typed "amiga radio" and guess what I got? http://www.theoldcomputer.com/Retro%20Radio/RetroRadio_Main.htm
I'm sure you can hook up a laptop or pc with an internet connection to the shop speakers.
I see no reason to assume that would be quite legal. Demoscene music might be a bit of a gray area (I really have no idea), but game music certainly isn't yours to do whatever you want with.
Besides, I'm not sure internet radio is really different from on-air radio as far as licenses for public playing of it goes. The point of that license money is to pay the copyright holders of the music, not the owners of the radio station, in which case it's doubtful if the exact medium changes anything.
I'll PM you some of my amateurish stuff, you can play that if you want...
How about playing songs from myspace.com?
Anyways, you're always free to play my tracks (link is in the signature).
I found an unsigned artists internet radio from google (Having found the time do that whilst running a shop :P ) and that's okay, although the odd artist is playing out of tune..
Go for it Hammerite, whats the worse that can happen? I don't play it? Haha ;D
Ah yeah DKH, I'll use yours, thanks!
Well, if it doesn't matter what genre, you are more than welcome to play our music in your store: http://www.myspace.com/ingnis
Would the music on http://music.podshow.com/ work? It's a site that provides music that's free and legal for podcasters to use, so unless there's some sort of licensing issue restricting institutions like shops from using the music, I'd imagine there wouldn't be any problem with it. This is from the FAQ:
QuoteWhat is Podsafe music?
Podsafe music is described as a work that meets all of the following conditions:
Works submitted to the Podsafe Music Network are the property of the artist, and all rights to these works, including lyrics and music, are the property of the artist.
AND
All works contain no recordings, lyrics, copyrights, or other elements that are the copyright of any other artist, except under the limited provisions of the Creative Commons License Agreement http://www.creativecommons.org.
AND
Despite any recording contracts with RIAA, ASCAP, or BMI, or other recording industry entity, the artist retains ownership of the works, and is free to distribute, broadcast, license or sell these works at the artist's discretion.

In most countries the station that plays the music has to pay the royalties (or whatever it's called) not the listener.
Jersey (the small tax-free island between England and France) receives free radio and tv from France but has to pay to receive english radio and tv because it's part of the UK. I guess internet radio works the same, since I haven't read anything that contradicts that.

Internet IS different from on-air radio, because it's international. The national royalty agency (or whatever the name is) can only check which songs are played by national on-air radio stations. It's impossible to find out who plays what in which country, so they can't charge you. If they do, it doesn't take a good lawyer to point out to the judge that the agency is flawed.
But, truth be told, I find copyright law hard to grasp sometimes.
You could have no music. I prefer to shop without music. Or you could play white noise, very quietly, in the background.
Or whale songs! :D

I've been on a mission, I've basically been going around asking bands via the net of course, if they give me permission to play their music!
