Title: Hit them Hard and Often
Post by: Atelier on Tue 18/08/2009 10:47:01
I saw this and had to share: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8206280.stm

QuoteIn their scientific paper, the authors conclude that humanity's only hope is to "hit them hard and hit them often".

:) So this is how they employ their time...

Hehe, I love the fact that this professor has a question mark at the end of his name to distinguish him from The Cure's Robert Smith... surely the word 'professor' already does this...

Scientists from university?

A perfect example of taxpayers' money well spent!

But I'll drink to the good professor health, so he can make me laugh again with another reasearch like this! =D

Cheers, professor!

I'm sorry, but if I were writing that article, I'd refuse to acknowledge such a silly alteration to one's last name as the addition of a question mark. Give me a fucking break. Are we supposed to take him seriously?

It must just be a publicity thing, anyone incorporating a "?" into their name must just be looking for attention.

However, if it was me I don't think i'd draw attention to the fact I was so over funded that this was the sort of research I was doing!

The article says it was a mathematical exercise to model the spread of infections diseases and zombies were used as part of it. It's serious research with a quirky twist, sheesh!

Scientists like zombies too! Who doesn't?

The link to the £45 zombie flick annoys me, how can a film using no steadicam/dolly go to cinema?

It seems like some people were so bored.

I heard an interview with this guy on NPR yesterday, actually.  He gave all his students assignments to pick various diseases and model their spread or whatever, and one of his students asked if he could do Zombie, expecting to get turned down.  But I suppose that when your professor has a question mark in his name, you have a better chance of such things getting accepted.  So the student did the modeling with the professor's help, and it eventually got wrapped into this paper as kind of a quirky post script.  Pretty cool story.

And the Professor Smith? legally had his name changed so it would be easier to find him in the phone book.  I guess.  Whatever.  ::)

Must be interesting for all the actually normal professors dealing with this man in normal conversation.  I wonder if they say his last name as though asking a question just to get the point across that he's a fool?

So when you call his office you say "Hi there is that Professor Robert Smith?" or Do you say "Hi there is that Professor Robert Smith??" Because the second one suggests an element of confusion.

Besides this is what happens when society puts pressure on generally anti-social nerds, to socialize. We should've kept them locked in the basement.
