It's interesting that every time a newcomer arrives, there will always be a crowd of semi-newcomers to present a variety of ideas about how people are treated here.

I dislike the "people here can be harsh, but give it some time and they'll accept you" argument.
It's not like that. Behave maturely and nobody will give a darn about how long you've been here; behave immaturely and be yelled at forever. There is no initiation rite.
