Title: I need to "borrow" a laptop for an evening...
Post by: Nikolas on Tue 13/02/2007 16:52:44
Hi all!

On the 21st of February, I'm having a string orchestra piece performed in Royal Holloway, University of London (which is in Surrey).

Now of course, I want to get the best recording possible! But I don't have any kind of mobile recording equipment. I checked around the uni and I know that I can get the perfect microphone(s), but I am still missing a laptop with a "decent" sound card on (one that will have pre-amp inputs for 1-2 mics). All software needed will come from me of course...

I wouldn't want to get your laptop and have it on my own (don't expect you to trust me), but if someone would be willing to come along the concert... That would be awesome... Tickets, rides, whatever will be on me of course...

Anyone living in the greater london area that would like to help.

The post code for the uni is :TW20 0EX

All help is appreciated

(Mini-disk has an unacceptable quality imo, and I don't have one, and no one I know has one actually... :-/) But anyways... as I said.

All help is appreciated.

I'm fairly sure there's almost no laptops with that functionality. You'd need a laptop with an external sound card. If I get my birthday present I'll actually have one, but that's 2 days before your gig, and I don't think I can get the money to fare over to the UK in the remaining time ;)

Forgot the word "firewire"... Whoops...

anyways you get the idea... :-/

I'm actually looking at recording studios at the moment. E-mailing them... I'll see how it goes...

Thanks though voh. And happy early birthday!

The place it's being performed in doesn't have a way to record it? Usually places like that have SOMETHING.

I'm pretty damn sure RHUL has an audio/visual department that will record for you.  Unless you want your own private recording and don't trust their equipment.

Yes, I know you are, that's why I mentioned you should talk to them, but you already have done.

Thing is that I'm under the impression that I could get the equipment but there is a lack of trust maybe... :-/ or something. I e-mailed the guy who is responsible for the studios (lecturer), and he mentioned that he can lend me the mics (pretty damn good mics), but not the mobile recording equipment. This equipment is supposed to go for students doing electronice music (and outdoor recording)... I'm not sure why I dont' qualify for that. Probably this lack of trust.

Thing is that I could pressure further and enquire deeper (reaching the head of department or further, since I know all of them), but this could end up in trouble, as this particular lecturer, is part of my trasfer to my PhD...  :-\

Either way I'll keep you posted :)

Find someone who is an electronic music/outdoorsy recording guy and have him come with you :)

as far as mobile stuff goes if you can find a laptop with 6pin firewire (would probably need to be a mac since pc laptops dont usually have 6 pin firewire) then id recommend the M-Audio firewire 4/10 which you can have 2 mics plugged in and its got built in pre-amp. even though my studio is not mobile i still love my 4/10

hehe...

Thanks Da_Elf...

Actually problem solved. I contacted the conductor, who told me that he has arranged for recording, from an extro sound engineer. Dunno if he will do a good job, but he better do! :)

Thanks everyone. :)
