Title: I was just fired.
Post by: Robert Eric on Fri 26/08/2005 04:18:16
I work at a local Wal-Mart, and today I was just fired.  My manager called me to the manager's office and said she wanted to go over the new schedule with me.  A co-manager was there with her that wanted to talk to me.  She told me that they suspected that employees may be stealing products from the store.  Now, that day I had bought some food to eat from the deli.  I went to go pay for it on the register that my friend worked at.  He told me that he couldn't ring in my products.  So, I talked to him for a little.  I forget that I hadn't paid for it; it happens, you know?  I go to the break room to eat my food, but they are having a meeting.  So, I eat my food in the bathroom.  I finish eating my food in the stall, but forget to throw out the bag that I got the food in.  Later that night, like I said before, my manger called me to the office and the co-manager said I was being fired for stealing.  Goshdarn, they are pretty friggin' strict these days.  I told them I'd pay for whatever it was that I forget to pay for.  They said, "No, it doesn't work that way."  So, I'm unemployed, I'm drunk and feeling sorry for myself and I don't know what to do.  On the form confirms my unemployment, it says and I quote, "Fired for stealing a pizza stick."  They are pretty much a pizza hotpocket that the deli cooks up and serves.  Let this be a lesson to you: don't steal from the company you work from.  Although I didn't intentionally steal it, I got fired nonetheless.  Have a nice day.

Wow ... that sucks man!

I used to work at a grocery store years ago and I never paid for anything from the place.

I would just go to the shelves and grab something to eat ... and they never said anything to me about it.

I did get fired from the place though ... but that's another story.

Sounds like a series of unfortunate events that led up to the firing.  Shake it off, you can always get another job!!

I put a year of my life into this damn company and this is how I go out.  Busted for not paying for a piece of food.  Although this doesn't really affect my financial situation it still is hard, mentally, to get over.  I got close to most of the people there and I enjoyed the experience; it was one of my better jobs.  I had some good people working for me and this is how I go out.  I just wish that there was something I could do to reverse this, but it's over.  I'll just have to move on.

Well... You could always figure out a way to display several different porno films over all of the video feeds in the store... That's what some other guy did who was fired for no reason at all.

That really sucks. Id say to look on the bright side and you`ll get over it and all of that, but when I think about it... I`d be feeling pretty terrible if that had happened to me, too. If Id stolen something, fine, but if I knew it was all a misunderstanding and they were just being inflexible, I`d feel like crap. All I can say is to give it a few days and you`ll be right to move on.  Afterall, its Walmart :P There are MUCH better things out there.

My god, youd think theyd let you have a pizza stick. I used to work at a bakery and we could pretty much take what we wanted.

Hell, almost every week they would ask me to go over them and help them since they were pretty much always understaffed.  I'd go over, help them and get not thank you.  No, "Hey thanks for giving us a much needed hand!"  No, they never said anything.  I was over at all the neighbooring departments: bakery, meat, produce.  But, they still fired me with no care.  I was a just a goddamned pizza roll, for christ sakes.  I should have read that little sign on the bathroom wall: All shoplifters will be prosecuted to the maximun extend of the law.  Well, at least I'm not getting sued, just fired.  At least my old boss is willing to take me back.  THAT, I'm grateful for.

If they thought you were stealing on purpose they probably would have booked you into the county jail. I know someone who did something very similar at Wal-Mart, but intentionally, and he ended up spending the night there and going through a trial.

I had a good reputation there, so they believed me when I told them that it definately was on accident.  All they did was have my assistant manager escort my out of the store.  I guess I was lucky.

The sad thing is that if justice was cheap and REALLY fair, you should be able to call that guy who you told you were going to pay as a witness to trial, the guys using the employees room so they could testify you were looking for a "public" place to eat, etc... In that way the truth would probably rise.

But nowadays that could cost you more money that the one you should win in that period working and 1 or 2 years in your life. Courts don't really work propperly, people fear to go to them.

I don't know if this makes sense, but I am working in a consultory, watching a lot of unfair things and people just surrenders (with reason) before trying to deffense its rights.

in my [juvenile, insane, completely wrong] opinion, i think you should prank the store... egg it, put porno in otherwise normal mags, and of course the classic "walk inside the store, into the managers office and scream "FUCK YOU!" at the top of your lungs." he'll call security, shit yeah, but you should get back at him, even
if my ideas are a little extreme  ;D .

Yes... Then the manager will emit a note recommending not to hire Robert in the town (and managers receive those letters, I can ensure that) and he'll probably sue him. You are very smart and mature Fluke...

Jean Valjean did 20 years for stealing some bread. I know how you feel about this kind of thing. There's still some things from ages ago I sometimes think over again in my head and say "If only I'd done X". It's pretty annoying, so I suggest you either:

a) Write them a letter telling your story in full, apologising for where you made mistakes, giving your good record and making it clear it was a mistake rather than theft and that you should really have had the chance to appeal. Say how you enjoyed working there, etc. and maybe you can get your job back, or at least an apology from them, which would give you some closure.

b) Forget about it as much as you can and move on with your life. Don't dwell on it, as it will drive you nuts and turn you into a bitter twisted person like Fluke

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.Ã,  That really sucks.Ã,  Next to finding out that your significant other is fooling around on you, there is no bigger ego-crusher like being fired from a job you actually love (not many people can find a job that they like).

I worked at a grocery store when I was 16.Ã,  I stole so much crap from there (I wouldn't really call it stealing, I just took a lot of stuff from the "damaged goods" shelf in the back of the store), as well as a few dirty magazines, and a few packs of smokes.Ã,  Eventually, I ended up being fired from there for coming in late. *laughs to himself*Ã,  That's ok, I hated the job, and my boss was a jerk. XDÃ,  I feel like I walked away the winner in that situation. :P

Anyhoo, back to your dilemma...

They were really being pricks about it, weren't they? "No it doesn't work that way."Ã,  I agree, rules about employee shoplifting are pretty stiff, and stupid, but unfortunately, when you're hired somewhere, it's their way or the highway.

It's probably not a really big loss, I mean, it's Wal-mart.Ã,  Plus you're other boss is willing to take you back.

Didn't the dude from the deli do or say anything to defend you?

Anyway, again, sorry to hear about this.Ã,  I guess that it's probably best to just keep your chin up, and look forward.Ã,  As a lot of people always tell me, play the hand you're dealt.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of beer are you drinking?

Life's a bitch, and then she leaves you and marrys someone else. It's tough. I can tell. But hey, You're better than them. I know you are. You're the kind of honest good guy most people would like would work with them of for them. Don't let this get to you. I know that it would've gone to me too, but hey, atleast now you know what kind of enviroment you're gonna leave. My condolences

Walmart is evil.
This story disturbs me in two ways:
- you would go over there and help them out when they called - on minimum wage?
- you would eat a pizza stick in a toilet stall. Ew.

Sorry to hear you lost your job.
What was wrong with the old place of employment (that you've gone back to)?

First, I'm sorry to hear you lost your job like that. Don't try to make them take you back, it will be a loss of time. They will be prejudiced and you'll probably be the one to pay when a collegue will actually steal something...

Second, get a new job asap and try to be as good at it as possible. If your finances are not that bad, going to your previous boss may not be a first rate idea...You will find it difficult to leave when you find something better (I think you'll want to leave them again, there must have been a reason the first time).

Only after you'll have worked at your new job for some weeks and been good at it, write a "sorry and thank you" letter to the ones who fired you, not to accuse them but to explain things and show you still respect the company. This will help with future demands for references...

Oh well. I understand watching TV can be a pain in the behind. Hope you find something better.
(Kidding. You probably had good reasons, which I will not question.)

All these companies are the same.  I work at Target, and it's the same story.  These mega corporations couldn't give 3 rat's asses about the employees.  We had a hurricane last week and the store opened the day after, despite not having any electricity.  They expected us to do our job as normal in the dark and with no air conditioning!

I would quit my job except I need the money. It's sad, isn't it?  In any case, RE, you can get another job, hopefully someplace less evil.

It's true about the corporate companies.   They really don't give a crap about they're "lower" employees.  They were probably just looking for a reason to fire you and hire on someone else at a lower rate.  There's a HUGE chain here in Boise... Albertsons, and they are the same way.  My boyfriend worked there for THREE YEARS.  About 6 months ago, they started cutting his hours in half.  He went from making 400 a week to making 200 a week.  They cut his hours and hired a bunch of new people.  Then they started scheduling him horrible times... they'd have him close at 2, and open at 6.  The third time they did that, he was 5 minutes late for the 6 am shift (I know, because i dropped him off that day)  It was the first time he had ever been late to the job in three years.  When he walked in his boss said..."you're late.  If you don't care about this job, here you go."  And she showed him the next week's schedule, that had him working only 1 four hour shift for the next two weeks.  There were about 7 others there that the same thing was done to.  So he ended up walking out.  They basically forced him to quit.

That's what corporations do.  It's awful.

I had a friend who worked for McDonalds, and, as always when you turn 18, they look for a reason to fire you. Amsuingly through, he gave one when they asked him to come into work and he said he was sick.

They asked, "with what?"

"Jungle Fever".

When he did go in they informed him that "there is no such thing as jungle fever!" and fired him.
