Title: More Computer Problems! x0
Post by: Steel Drummer on Sat 29/07/2006 21:01:25
Two things I need some help with:

1. I got a new PC without Java, when i try to install it, it says "cannot find j150000.cab". Can someone either email me that file, or give me a non-broken download link?

2. I keep getting screwy messages like 'Windows has found 55 errors, go to regfixit.net to get rid of them'. But every time it has a different amount of errors and a different site. It's been doing that since I got the new computer, so I suspect it's something wrong with the way they set the thing itself up, or else a screwy Windows 200 install.

Can anyone help with these things (especially the first!)?

Thanks,

Yoda

you really should learn how to google.

For example.

Sounds like spyware to me. Ran all sorts of anti-spyware thingies already?

1. Re-Download it (http://192.18.108.149/ECom/EComTicketServlet/BEGIN689ED68FDF0DCC351E781A415A252FE4/-2147483648/1599408951/1/732158/731942/1599408951/2ts+/westCoastFSEND/jre-1.5.0_07-oth-JPR/jre-1.5.0_07-oth-JPR:2/jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe)

2. Disable the Messenger service. Here's how:

Go to Control Panel>Administrative Settings>Services and find "Messenger" in the list. Double-click it, then change the box to disable. After that press the stop button, and then close out of the windows.

Problem Solved. But I am curious, is it a NEW PC, or something you bought second-hand or "refurbished?" Because I don't care how much "better" 2000 is for purists and such, but for any normal consumer users Windows XP w/ SP2 is the least confusing, least dangerous, and most compatible.

It was a brand new PC. We could have gotten Xp, but it would have cost like 200 more dollars and it wasn't worth it. Thanks for the help. I dunno if the java download will solve my problem, but I'll try it..

Not worth XP? I would of chipped in to get it... as long as your not using Windows ME... *shudder*

I think the real question is what supplier you got this computer from, because the additional cost of XP should be negligible with many of the bigger companies.

Buying a new PC with windows 2000 is like buying a Porsche with a 1400 engine. Or a 2 story house with no bathrooms.
A lot fo programs and games will have problems with working and the security of XP is better, and as you can see you have security problems in your PC. Not that installing XP solve all security problems, but it will be less vulnerable.
Also you should know by now never ever to click windows that tell you there are porblems with your computer and go to some address to solve. It's always spyware\adware and it always being more problems. Remove the spyware with anti-spyware programs and stay out of such pop-ups. It probably all started when you entered some malicious site or pop-up.
Also after you remvoe the spyware you should install Firefox and use that instead of explorer to enjoy it blocking pop-ups (and tons of more features that Explorer doesn't have). It's better than to use supposed pop-up blockers for IE because sometimes those blockers are spyware\adware themselves (even google toolbar).
About tha java thing, maybe you were trying to install the latest XP version of it, go to the official site and find somethign that supports win2000.

Or some other browser with equal security, but which hogs much less resources, doesn't lose bookmarks, is generally more stable....

Please notice that these messages are actually Internet Explorer popups.  These are coming from either a website with popup ads or spyware that is on your computer.

If you actually believed that they were real Windows warnings and you went to regfixit.net and purchased whatever they are trying to sell you, you need to first, feel really dumb for falling for a fake ad that was designed to trick your grandmother, and then second, uninstall anything you got of that site, install adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/), a virus program (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1), and an alternate browser (http://www.opera.com/)

Then you need to learn some basics about computer and internet use before you continue to use and screw up your computer.

I don't understand Ishmael are your criticizing firefox??   Sounds very weird to me, cos it very barely uses any of my CPU\memory capacity, doens't lose bookmarks (what?) and never been unstable. Maybe you just need the latest version, pal.
I think it's pretty common knowledge that firefox is stable and better than IE in any way.

I have the latest version of firefox, and I have known it to lose bookmarks and devour system resources. But its still better than IE, at least in my opinion.

As for Yodaman's actual problem, I agree with everything Vince Twelve said.

I used Spybot and it removed the bad stuff. I never get those messages anymore. I didn't download the java thing (slow internet), but I have it paused on my download accelerator. It turns out that some idiots put tracking cookies on my computer. I wonder if CJ had anything to do with this?  :=

basically every site you are on puts cookies in your pc to save your preferences etc. If you wan tto enter these forums without having to log in every time for example, the cookie does it for you.
Most cookies aren't malicious. At least not those that come from normal sites. Cookies from porn sites, warez or other illegal crap could be dangerous.

And I still never heard or saw those firefox symptomps you guys were tallking about. But I'm sure anyone that tryed both would agree that firefox is better than IE in every way.

Just my humble opinion and suggestion - http://www.maxthon.com

And I've noticed, with eight tabs open it sometimes takes less memory than one IE window open...

Before i write anything else: I used to use firefox so I know how it's like.

The new IE 7 (witch is still in beta) is pretty much the same as firofox.
It uses tabs and it has built in pop-up blocker.

So my point is that IE has moved one step foward and isin't so crap anymore.

Sorry for off-topic!

ish, it's still based on the IE core which doesn't comply to standards and gives designers a hard time. maxthon, ie2 etc are like putting a blanket on top of a giant hole ;)

IE7 still not as stable as firefox and the big advantage of firefox besides tabs is the countless add-ons you can get to enhance the browser.
