Title: mpeg2 codecs & re-installing?
Post by: on Mon 16/01/2006 14:05:57
Helloo, I have a small problem regarding Windows media player! Since trying to install a few games on my PC, DirectX changed my video settings somehow and changed the way video looks on my screen. I didn't want that, because the "look" it has normally looks much better on TV when I am say, printing video footage.

So, I tried re-installing my nVidia graphics card but it was still there, so I assumed it must have been due to one of the DirectX updates from the games (which didnt end up working on this machine anyway!). Now, as far as I'm aware - once you've got DirectX you've got it for life, and that downgrading is practically impossible too. If this isn't the case then do correct me but from this experience that hasn't looked like the case to me :P I tried deleting what I could of DirectX out of the winnt system folder & I think I took out some other essential things too :P

Anyway, I managed to somehow (I think) re-install DirectX 6. The graphics are back to how I want them. But I have two new problems which I'm stuck with. One, is that anytime I play an MPEG file - the screen is green, with bits of the video in bars on the screen. AVI's play fine, mid's etc too. So I assume there's an mpeg codec or device in my machine somewhere that needs replacing or updating.

I tried re-installing media player 6.4, hoping that would put the codecs back, but, well, 6.4 doesnt come as an installation these days, just an exe :P I figure installing media player 7 or 10 might help this situation, but I'm a fiend for my 6.4, and don't really want to change it. Is there some other way I can reboot my mpeg codecs? I've "repaired" Windows 2000, too - and that hasn't gotten rid of the greeeen.

Also, my firewire card isnt reading from my camera, so thats a secondary bitch - I've re-installed Premiere and, well the cd that came with it only has software on it, no drivers so I'm hellaconfused.

If anyone has any ideas about the mpeg thing though I'd love to hear! :) I really dont want to have to re-format my machine because of direct-x! lol

try installing VLC Player, i think it comes with a bunch of codec stuff, you can get it from www.videolan.org, as a last resort you could try installing windows over itself, but that could lead to more problems and then a reformat really would be in order.
also try maybe rolling back your graphics card drivers.

To verify which version of DirectX your computer is running, click on "Start" then "Run", then enter in the following command: dxdiag
Ã,  This runs the DirectX diagnostic utility. It gives lots of system information, displays the current version of DirectX installed, and lets you run various graphics & sounds test as well as being able to change the sound-hardware accelleration settings.

Ã,  Ã, If all of the problems you're having are still quite recent, then it's possible that doing a System Restore to a date to before when the problem occured may resolve the problems.
System restore can usually be found from "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools" then "System Restore".Ã,  If you're lucky, you'll find a checkpoint that was before all your problems started to occur.

The video playback problem you mentioned sounds typical a CODEC type of problem.Ã,  Usually installing the corect codec or adjusting for the correct setting should correct the problem. I had a problem before similar to what you mentioned, and installing the codec bundle from the following location help me to fix the problem:
http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml

Also,Ã,  I was using "ffdshow" for handling some of some of the video/codec settings, and from the "ffdshow" options I had to be sure to Un-Check the following options to under the "Supported Codecs" options to allow the new "xvid" codecs (as mentioned in the above web-link) to run properly: "xvid", "mp43" and "mp42".
Ã,  Ã, Un-Checking those options in "ffdshow" would then allow the new "xvid" codecs to run properly on my system.Ã,  Of course, if you don't have ffdshow installed, then you probably don't need to worry about that part.

Hope some of that may be of help. Good luck.

Thaaank yoooou! It worked!!!! Mpegs are back up and running! The only part not working now is video capture, so I'll work on that. Thanks for your help though, guys :)
