if you have just started out using ags make your first game with the default gui and dont worry if it doesnt look polished'

when i started i wanted my game to be just like monkey island and i was posting questions about all sorts of stuff i didnt really need.

learn all the basics first
and dont worry if it look shoddy you can always tart it up when you know more about the scripting

as my nan always says "YOUR TRYING TO RUN BEFORE YOUVE LEARNED HOW TO WALK"

also dont mess with the script unless you are 100%
sure what you are doing

Another important lesson for n00bs is: don't expect anyone to read anything marked "newbies read this" or similar... because they don't.  ;)

I'm not sure that you need to be 100% proficient with scripting before you try to use it... after all, how do you learn if you don't try until you have already learned?

He has a point. It's all about learning.

newbies don't realise they are being called newbies, and if they do, they'll ignore it because they wont like it.

Though, it may be time-wasting to just make simple games. You want to build up from there.

Actually, what I did when I started with AGS, is just "learn as I made". My first game ever was The Find Demo. My second was Apprentice. And that's all. I made two little tutorial games available on the HEP site, but that was just for other people, not for my own learning.

Anyways, that's just the way I learn. Sometimes it helps if you have a vision for what you want to make. Don't say: "I can't script that because I don't know how to script it", say "I don't know how to script it, but I'll find out".

I disagree, messing around with scripting is one of the best ways to learn, as long as you make use of the manual and dont  ask too many RTFM technie questions theres nothing wrong with it.

I hate bananas because they give me violently graphic dream sequences of Michael Jackson with plastic surgery around his pubic area...wtf?

Okay... so maybe that wasn't a REAL quote....

My point is, you don't have to know scripting to START. You do have to know scripting to FINISH!

If you can't see the relationship between that and the quote I used....then you're pretty darn silly  :D ;D ;) 8) :P
