I couldn't dig up that old Nintendo DS thread... seems to have disappeared. But anyway, I found this!!!

Imagine how cool that would be! Imagine! Wouldn't it be cool! I mean, okay, so I have this vision of it being incredibly disorientating and irritating... but it's early technology!

Imagine, in a couple years, when you can literally stand next to game characters in their world.

Neat.

Discuss.

EDIT: I'm callin' for a 3D AGS port, CJ!

Are you considered old if you actually remember the Virtual Reality hype of the 90's?
I actually tried it.
It was beyond the worst form of terrible ever.

Ha ha ha... I had one of those VR helmets... it claimed to be ultra-realistic... it was like pressing your face against a TV while playing the earliest ever version of Ping Pong.

That said, I think that the 3D display could be awesome, once it has a chance to grow a little. You never know.

Oh no, I agree, I was just pointing out how terrible and stupid it was way back when it was supposed to be the 'next big thing'.

I do see obstacles though.

The one I tried was one of those big arcadey type games. I had the helmet thing on and they gave me some kind of controller thing to use for shooting or whatever the game was about. The problem was that I ended up with the cable from the helmet wrapped all around me and a serious case of dizzyness as my body tried to decide if it was actually moving or not. One of the more impressive pieces of the technology was how you would move your head and have a second of lag before the visuals updated themselves. I'm surprised they didn't hand you a barf bag as they strapped you in.

It'd be like that episode of Futurama where you can download celebrities, almost... except imagine, instead of Lucy Lu, Harrison Ford.

I'm just waiting for prerendered graphics to be photo-realistic, so I can finally
"film" Indiana Jones and the Monkey King.
I make music.

My videocard came with one of those geeky lcd-shutter 3D glasses. I was mucho surprised when it actually turned out to work ... I use it every now and then for first person games (it makes Silent Hill double creepy). Only drawback is the massive splitting headache it causes ...
The only thing they don't explain in the article how this display actually works ...  >:(

iirc, it controls the direction in which light leaves the display, delivering different images to the left and right eyes.

edit: quote

"Sharp's TFT 3D LCD technology works on the principle of displaying left and right eye views that are separated so that the left eye sees only the left eye image, and the right eye sees only the right eye image," said Ian Matthew, 3D Solutions Business Development Manager at Sharp Systems of America, in a statement. "Since these images have perspective and are offset in the same way that the human eye normally sees the two images, the brain naturally interprets the image disparity and creates a 'sense of depth' effect. The result is a 3D, 'out of screen' display,' that provides users with a visual experience previously unattainable without polarized or liquid crystal shuttering lenses."

Ooh, I remember going to see Terminator 3D and then later finding out how those glasses worked. It ruined the coolness factor for me, but oh well.

Is there a web site or something that I can see this 3D LCD technology?
