I went to a local second hand store and saw a video tape that turned out to be none other than 'The Wizard', the classic movie about a kid who rocks at video games. I was about to buy it, it was ridiculously cheap and seemed to be in good condition, but would it be worth anything? I've seen the movie and to be frank it sucks balls (except for the gameplay parts of various games) but it hasn't been released on a dvd and I have never seen it being sold anywhere else. Should I go back and buy it? I doubt anyone has bought it yet.
Every now and then I have seen some old video games turn up, like a boxed copy of Under a Killing Moon (I still regret not buying it) and some boxed NES games. What old stuff (other stuff than games, too) you have purchased? Any real treasures one should keep an eye in case it turns up somewhere?
Silver on the pc. I once found a dreamcast copy and bought it out of histeria... then realised I didn't have a dreamcast, so came seconds away from buying one just to play this game. Then I remembered my uncle once had the PC version (far superior to the dreamcast version), so I phoned him up and he still had it.
As for the wizard, it's completly up to you, if the movie sucked balls don't buy it. If it could sell for more than you pay for it, buy it and sell it.
Is it the movie, where the kids go on a competition to play Mario 3 and the smallest kid is this big-ass game wiz? If so, get it now!
If you like it why not get it, Pete :D That's the only reason I buy cheap adventure games, without really caring if I've heard of it or even if I have - heard of it being crap. But that's because they hold a more personal value to me. I like being in possesion of older adventure games.
I used to buy videos out of the bargain bins at Blockbusters, sometimes they were as little as 99p. Luckily I liked crappy movies that no-one else really did so they were sold of cheap :P Quality never lacked though, which was a nice surprise. I've sold those off at car-boot, not for much more than I bought them though really.
I'd suspect though that Under A Killing Moon is quite rare!!!!! Well to someone like me and you it probably is, but to a lot of other people it's not. And certainly to computer game stores it won't be. I guess they make their megabucks on the big titles & that's all they need. Hence multibillion forever changing industry :P
Perhaps in a few decades time you'll make some money off these bargains on ebay. I think that's feasible. I'd like to get into it but I don't have much old stuff to try with prices. I know my friend sold old videos off for a fairly high price because they were collectors items.
Anyway like magintz said - its your call. If you like 'em you'll buy 'em. Hopefully UAKM will come back round!!!! :P If I had a local computer shop that sold cheapo bargains I'd definitely buy them if I liked them.
lol & the smileys form an interesting curve!
I still buy old VHS tapes of rare or weird movies when I can find them. Usually the quailty of the tape will have deteriorated, but if it comes in a cool old-stylee box I don't care.
Original rental VHS copies of certain movies, like the Star Wars Trilogy, are collectable alright.
I've never bought one with the express purpose of reselling it, tho.
btw, videotape actually SMELLS different as it ages.
My original rental copy of LifeForce, from 1985, smells like cigars. :D
I don't really collect stuff except vinyls (if they come cheap), but I don't believe old VHS-tapes to have much value. My grandparents had a Betamax with Superman 1 and some other strange movies, but since it stopped functioning after 18 years of use, we just threw it out. Vhs /magnetic tape quality deteriorates quite quickly and analog copies always add static (I once found Stalker in my parents video collection, but it was a pain to watch cause the image and video was warped). Same goes for old C-cassettes we had, like Clapton and stuff, even if you rerecord over them the sound is much worse than new ones.
You can always find someone on Ebay willing to shelf out money for anything, but I'd guess profits lie elsewhere.
In my case it would just end in a cardboard box somewhere in the attic and be forgotten.
I have to different original versions of Under A Killing Moon in their box. I have the PC and the MAC version. I also found Amazon recently again which was on 9 disks so I bought that as well and sealed it cause I don't particuarly want to install it from those disks cause it would probably kill them in 2 seconds flat.
I went and got it.

Petteri is very excited over his latest purchase.
Don't let the picture fool you though, the Finnish name seems to be Game Over (which is quite a silly name, too. I mean, the kid is super good at video games, so to name it Game Over? I would understand that title if the kid sucked at video games. Also, my finger looks strangely fat in that picture).
I'm afraid the quality will be very bad, yes. However, I'm a NES fan so it will be a nice addition to my uh, "collection".
That's the one! It is truly a classic.
"My god! He's playing Rad Racer using only his wrist!"
The Power Glove was such a useless peripheral in real life! :D
At least I think it was Rad Racer he was playing in the movie:/
I saw the movie when it first came out, so I strain to remember.
Yes, I'm THAT old! :-*
THE POWER GLOVE. IT'S SO BAD.
Maybe that line was inserted into the script by some guilty Nintendo lacky who was trying to warn the world. :o
Yes, Lucas plays Rad Racer with the power glove and everyone is blown away. It's interesting how Corey is wearing the power glove in the cover of the movie even though he was a good guy and the power glove was TEH EVIL. I know the glove doesn't really work in real life, but damn, it looks so cool. Totally rad.
I LOVE THE POWER GLOVE. IT'S SO BAD.
QuoteThe Power Glove was such a useless peripheral in real life!
Lies! I played many a game with it before I got the joy that was NES MAX!
wooh Rad Racer, i still have a copy of that along with the instruction manual and box. same for Burai Fighter.
but about VHS, i would kill several people for a perfect quality copy of the theatrical release of Blade Runner (the version with the narration) as my copy is a bit worn down, i want to put my external tv card to some good use and make a dvd of it.
i really love cash convertor type shops, people always seem to get rid of stuff that i want, it's a lot more personal than eBay too as you can actually look at and hold the item. i wish we had a place like that in my town, all we really have are charity shops which mostly sell clothes and books. there's some second hand shop near me but all they seem to like selling is furniture...
