The trailer for the new and last PotC movie is released.
http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/piratesofthecaribbeanatworldsend.html
Oddly enough, I can't spot any scenes "borrowed" from Monkey Island. Not yet.
Although, if Jack is mad, he must be Mad Jack the Pirate.
I very much doubt this will be the last one, if disney make enough money and they can get Depp back, they will go on making them.
On the other hand, as long as they entertain me (and the first 2 did), then by god, make more.
Hellraiser's up to 8 now, and I've enjoyed all of them (though they're getting a bit... weird, to say the least, the last 2 were still delivious pulp horror), so long-running series don't scare me ;)
Thanks for the link! Finally I can confirm that I live at world's end. ;D hilarious.
The release date in my country is only May 25 :(
How will I survive?!??
I won' t miss this one, I really liked the first 2. And apparently, Depp said he could go on doing this till the 6th movie, which is not an official confirmation, but they might shot more films, that' s for sure. :)
Don't tell me that!
I want it to be a trilogy. I feel that anymore will just feel too rehashed and feel stale. Short and sweet, ta.
Besides, I've purposely not bought the last two on DVD because you just KNOW they will release it as a boxset trilogy pack.
They could always make 2 trilogys with the same subject. Star Wars has 3 trilogies with 2 of them ready. Incase you didn't know. They could just cut the plot and make a future adventures of the son of Jack Sparrow :)
Wow, that trailer looks sweet.
Anywho, I really don't mind if they keep making sequels, as long as they don't get worse like some of Disney's "sequels" (The Little Mermaid III? What the hell?)
Yeah, they do them for money. But can anything with pirates get bad? I mean look at Peter Pan, now that one never gets old, no matter how many sequels and versions.

Actually, there are books about his adventures as a teenager. I've read the first one, which I enjoyed very much, and I think there are 3 books. It'd be cool to see.

Sorry for offtopic, but it amuses me that you describe the Peter Pan series as never getting old - maybe its just my lame sense of humor. I loved Peter Pan as a kid.
Back on topic, I vote for the two trilogy idea. But not having the second trilogy as a prequel to the first trilogy.
I saw the movie yesterday morning. I liked it so much. But it was less amusing than the 2nd one; this one was more into the action.
My favourite scenes were
Spoiler
*At the beginning, the song of the child and the other condemneds'.
*Elizabeth rowing on Singapore, singing.
*The voyage on the Pole between the icebergs (and especially that polar night; the reflection of the stars on sea)
*Elizabeth running into her dead father.
*That surreal place of Jack before getting rescued.
*-This is madness! -This is politics.
*Beckett's last moment before the destruction of his ship.
Were there any MI deja vu moments?
Anyone else likes that jack sparrow? He got some funny way of be that makes me laugh almost of just looking his face :)
I (and many plenty of people) find Jack Sparrow funny and entartaining; however he is not a dude I would want to be friend with. I think I would be Beckett if I was a character in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Awesome film. I didn't really understand the story, but I just love the setting and the way it was shot.
Not better than the first 2, but good nonetheless.
Anyone catch the scene after the credits?
I saw an article somewhere that Bruckheimer was definitely looking to make more Pirates movies even if they spin-off on other storylines w/o Johnny Depp.
Found! http://www.hollywood.com/news/Bruckheimer_Considers_More_Pirates_Films/3692852
This movie was muddled & convoluted! I still enjoyed it but it seems the filmmakers don't care if we follow the plot. They trust that we'll just latch on to whatever silliness they subscribe us to.

What the hell was Cho Yun Fat talking about?
Kinda vague, can you be more specific?
Spoiler
what the hell was Cho Yun Fat talking about before he died?
Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but mostly that's because I'm not too tremendously picky to have fun. There was a lot I'd rather not have seen in the film, but overall I had a good time watching it. I have a few complaints, but I must stress that these are far less substantial gripes than I'm going to make them sound.
Spoiler
I had trouble following a lot of the dialogue, especially toward the beginning of the movie. Similarly, the plot was difficult to follow, and at times it really, really didn't make sense.
Is it just me, or was there a swordfighting deficit throughout most of this movie?
I wish they would make up their minds about what these movies are supposed to be. Are they dark, gritty, violent action-adventures, or are they cheap laugh fests? They're trying to produce too many kinds of movies all in the same one. This third instalment was a little better than the second film on this point.
I like long movies, but this one was at least in part made long by including pointlessly drawn out slo-mo shots, such as that last one of Beckett before his ship exploded. "Oh no! My ship is exploding! I'll stroll down the steps onto the main deck and really make my dying moment count! I can do that because I'm such an important character. They won't let me die before I've had my moment." It didn't work for me. Sorry, Gord.
What the hell was all that multiple Jacks nonsense? I mean, I'm imaginative, so I can kind of make it work in my head, but I think that whole strange thread should have been carried out and fulfilled better. If you're going to incorporate some surreal strangeness in your movie, then gods damn it all, don't do such a half-assed job of it!
Something I'm wondering: Barbossa was Jack Sparrow's first mate back in the day. So where did all this pirate lord stuff come from? Neither one of them really appeared to be figures of any real importance in the first film or even the second for that matter. So all of a sudden they're two of the LEGENDARY SUPER PIRATE LORDS!!!11lol? Huh?
The whole Calypso thread felt half-finished in my opinion.
The slo mo didn't bother me as much. Nor did the surreal sequences. But I second your comments about...
Spoiler
The Pirate Lord stuff . It was nonsense, all of it. Jack didn't quite fit in with that company unless he inherited the position from his dad who in my opinion didn't appear to be retired. Barbossa was a first mate up until he became a cursed pirate captain of the Black Pearl.
I'm not going to bother putting the pieces together becaus ultimately the writing is just a formula and nothing else. All to get my dollars. Which they have.
My theory on Pirate Lords:
Spoiler
Jack is supposed to have inherited/stole his piece of eight. Barbossa was a captain long before he joined Jack's crew. He lost his ship and joined Jack's crew with the intention of mutinying upon Jack. (which he succeeded in doing). So Barbossa could have gotten his piece long before Jack came into the picture.
Also the Pirate Lords aren't just chosen whenever a new fearsome pirate comes into play, but instead are the original pirates who captured calypso or something like that. This is happened long before the first movie.
Remember, Jack most likely stole his piece of eight.

HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE THAT SCENE?? BLASPHEM0R!
*Cough cough* Well, I had liked the dramaticity of that scene; Beckett was one of the few characters I could sympathise with.
The slo mo and the surreal sequences didn't bothered me. I must also confess that those surreal sequence in the ship reminded me of a certain scene in 6 Days A Sacrifice.
I enjoyed the film, but I was prepared for the worst and wasn't expecting any kind of sense. The plot to me was not too complex, but just served to make you not actually care about any of the characters. It took itself a little too seriously, but come on, it was no where near as bad as the Matrix sequels :P
I liked the movie though there were a few things that were just too silly...
Spoiler
Asian captains, African captains, Arabian pirates... WTF? Where are the Klingons? Those guys looked so fake and out of place. What would an asian ship, asian crew and asian captain do in the middle of the Carribean sea?
The parrot and the monkey were annoyingly cartoony.
And that giant Calypso thing was soo stupid...
There were moment like this movie was too childish and stupid even for Disney.

Spoiler
Uh...there WERE African, Arabian, Asian pirates. In real life! They existed! The real historical Barbarossa (Redbeard) was a Turkish corsair in the pay of the Ottoman Empire. The Meeting of the Brethren Court didn't specify where it took place, and presumably as they had already travelled all over the world (Singapore - World's End, at least), it could have taken place anywhere. I was actually glad to see the acknowledgement of other piratical cultures in the film, rather than just the over-romanticised Carribean pirates.
I'm the only person in the world who thinks that Pirates of the Carribean is poor and overrated...
And the third one is even poorer still. The 4th and 5th are going to be so fucking poor that a new sea will be created from the boredom-tears of millions of people everywhere.

I hear ya. About 2/3rd into it I was thinking "I haven't cared about the plot for a while now" and was just waiting for things to calm down somewhat so I could find someone to latch onto.
There were two scenes in the last part of the movie I definitely could've gone without. Grmbl vows grmbl becket...
Damnit, I've heard too many things to make me not really want to go and see this now, and Spiderman3. Guess I'll just wait for die hard 4 :)

Apparently that's really shit. ;)
Yeah, it looks it. :(
And instead of giving my 2 cents I'll bet it that Indy4 is pretty w**k too.
But, Die Hard aers my favourite trilogy, and I never saw any of them in the cinema (what with them being 18's and me being 11), so this, like Rocky Balboa, is my one chance of redemption :)
I heard Die Hard 23 was quite good.
And I liked the way Ocean's 45 was shot.
Pirates of the Caribbean 19 looks promising.
Indy 89 might be a bit farfetched for me though.
Sometimes you gotta give sequels a break. I mean come one, how many more sequels do we need?
How about another 50 animated underwater movies? Those seem to bring in the money nicely.
To be fair, it's always worth giving a sequels a chance. If you genuinley like the universe the original films create and want to see that expanded on, I don't see why you'd have a problem with sequels. If they turn out to be dumb & don't do themselves any favours, well, thats just too bad for them. They still make enough money to cover their mistakes!

At this point you are writing the movies for them. :) J
Writers of pirates 2 & 3: Do you think they plan it all out or are they just making it up as they go along?

I'm actually agreeing with you. The first
Pirates was average (or even maybe below average), but- turning a theme park ride into a credible franchise? No.
Turning a credible franchise into a theme park ride, yes?
That happens all too often :D
So I think it's quite fantastic that POTC is an inspiration from a ride that has been an inspiration to millions since it was opened. What other theme park rides have generated movies, rather than the other way around? Not many that I know of... Granted, if they did it nowadays it would probably be quite cheesy, but with certain rides that herald so much inspiration, where's the harm in that? If Nemesis had a movie...well, actually I think now it'd be quite cool, but that's only because I've seen the Nemesis comics. If....hmm...X: No Way Out (thorpe park) had a movie, that would suck :p
So I agree that turning theme park rides into credible (in this case FILM) franchises is a pretty pointless thing to do, but for POTC ride, it really works. It works for me especially because..well, I know of the ride, I know MI was inspired by the ride, I know Jurassic Park has a quote in it about the ride*...its just one of those thing thats "inter-textual" so to speak. They've made movies based on some terribly weird things. So a theme park ride isn't that bad! ;) Watching the Pirates movies only makes me feel even more like I know who these people are & more about the cooky universe they're in.
Personally, I would've been satisfied with a lone POTC movie. When I heard there was a sequel I was relatively dissapointed. But, I was pleasently surprised when I watched it.
In this case a theme park ride spawned 2 credible franchises....
the other is Monkey Island you dumb jerk!

Four words:
Return of the Jedi.
For those who didn' t liked the films...
You should go to the closer police station and denounce the person who, aiming to your head with a gun, obligated to go to the cinema and see a film you didn' t wanted to see!
:(
Nacho, I got dragged to LotR without ever showing interest one way or the other. I can understand if a group of friends or family pushed to go see Pirates together.

The first Pirates movie was (and I expect most people will agree here) the best. Why? Because it was a huge and fantastically over budgeted farce. The vague plot was just an excuse to bring pirates, ghosts and a governor's daughter out onto the high seas and generally have a lot of battles and swordplay. It was essentially something that should have been made in somebody's swimming pool, but with million dollar effects and some great one-liners.
Now Pirates three rolls out, and somebody's decided that they want to go all serious. We get
Spoiler
a huge complex plot that doesn't exactly sit perfectly with the other films, and what on earth is going on with Jack and his army of Jacks? I signed on for the jokes and action, not Depp being surreal in a big white studio and licking rocks. And I don't see why they had to make him mad; he's the best written character by far. Also a distinct lack of action until the end (which was a great sequence)
That having been said I did enjoy the film, just don't go expecting something the same as the first two. And all of my complaints are overridden by
Spoiler
the sight of a monkey in a pirate costume being launched from a cannon
The bottom line in my opinion is that these movies are essentially just a way to be entertained for a while. They're not Schindler's List or Casablanca or even intended to be regarded as such. There are things I didn't like, yeah, but on the whole I still enjoyed watching it.
It's like Fat Elvis.
It's fat - it's bloated.... it's epic.
But it's still Elvis in the end.
Though I liked Pirates 1....er... Skinny Elvis better.
Bt
I enjoy these movies. I'm not looking for anything great, just some action, a few one-liners, and piratey things. All of the movies have provided me that, and I've been content with it.
One complaint I'd have of the last two are the length of the films. They do keep getting longer, and the first one was long too, but since it was in a tight one story arch movie it seemed to flow better. Wheras the new ones story is really kind of sparse and they fill it in with too much action and one-liners.
Another complain is really just the references to their previous movies, which I haven't seen in a while. It's not really their fault that I don't rewatch movies over and over again, but it did take me a while to remember what exactly had happened before the third installment.
It kept me mostly entertained for it's length, and I know I'll see the fourth movie.
