Sega have jumped on the barrel scraping bandwagon and released their own classics collection on the playstation 2, with games like golden axe and outrun. I'm gathering the only reason people would buy this in the first place is for the nostalgia. So why on earth did Sega decide to "enhance" the graphics and sound for the games? From the reviews I've read it seems the games in their true original form are not available on it.
Being cynical, I suspect they did this in hope of selling it to more punters. "Look 14 year old child! We've enhanced the graphics just for you!" Or something to that effect.
Sure, I'd personally not play the games either way anymore, but I'm interested in hearing your views!
Bah, no sonic games in there... I wouldn't waste my time with it :P
Seriously though, I don't think the graphics are just them pulling something like that, it seems like they're just doing it because they can.
And really, the only sega games I ever enjoyed were the ones that involved a blue hedgehog, a two-tail'd fox and good ol' K-T-E.

That would be because Sega already released not one, but TWO sonic classic compilations!
Yea, I know... but like I said, that's the only thing the sega corporation had that i really enjoyed playing.
The funny thing is, in Japan these games were released separately. And The Sega Ages line, as its called, features a whole host of games that didn't make on the western edition. Some supposedly better than the ones on that compiliation, and some far worse.
As for the Sega's reasoning behind the "enhancements", and for why they didn't include the original versions too, I guess only Sega knows.
It fails as both a historical record and a fun way to waste an hour or two.
The Taito Legends compilations seem a much better choice for retroheads.
Old games with new graphics is almost always something good.
There's like billon games that cry for a remake. Life & Death, anyone? :D
Also, bringing back the ethalons of real gameplay is refreshing in nowadays no-game-good-looks-only ruined gameworld.
Golden Axe looks actually quite cool. I would play this. And Outrun. Other games don't say much to me.
Meh, I just download an emulator if I feel the need to play an old sega game.
The enhancements to Phantasy Star I and II actually looked quite good...Is that included in this release?
I say, "Why not?" If Sega feels they can gain a few bucks off a re-release, let 'em do it. Some of us older folks like the classic 2D games that don't take 5 minutes to load the next scene, or the strange angles the 3D engines place your character in, or even the crappy heavy metal soundtracks they pollute the games with. Not saying all games today are terrible, (some are down-right awsome,) but I wish they would use some old blueprints of the games I loved playing when I was growing up.
I hope more companies follow suite and re-release their adventure, rpg, platform, puzzle, and sidescroller games, (with enhanced sound, playability, added modules, enhanced graphics, etc.)
I just got Gametap... Best decision of my life. They're getting ready to release Quest for Glory 3. YAY! Plus, everything is completely original... no enhanced graphics, no new soundtracks. All is as it should be...
Actually, I just read a review and it sounds like they did a really poor job on these updates, and not just graphically. Severally of the games are almost unplayable due to gameplay issues, like the vehicles in F1 and Out Run moving sluggishly and frame rate issues. These are also sold in groups of two in japan as budget titles, basically stuff they slapped together for a few easy yen. I'll definitely avoid this collection and hope the phantasy star remakes are done in english since they actually looked good.

Hey, I played Life & Death 2: The Brain a lot when I was younger. My dad would walk in and say, "Okay Luke, stop performing surgery and clean your room." Or something like that anyway. Ah... good times. I never did manage to complete successfully a single operation, though. :(

Then I bring to your attention the remake of golden axe! They've made it pseudo 3D and made the game harder.
Don't take five minutes to load? I take it you never had a spectrum or C64?! (Although I assume you're referring to consoles)
Phantasy remake? Cool I never played them! Here's hoping then..

Who? Me? As I said earlier, I don't want to play them at all.
I do however think that changing the games and claiming them to be the "classics" is appalling!
