I know i can't be the only one who loves the Sims in this forum. If you are a Sims fan, which expansion packs do you own?, and also if you own the console version of the Sims. Also how do you like to kill your sims, which i never do, i swear. That would be cruel.
ok, one sec, i have a sim to lock in a room alone.
shawn
Ah yes, the Sims. I used to LOVE the game, before it got old. I knew I was tiring of it when I started killing my Sims in creative ways like locking them in a one-square room and watching them pee themselves to death.
It was quite awesome. However it took up so much of my time. Hours would go by before I noticed that my house was halfway done and I hadn't even started gameplay yet. :P
I get hooked on the sims like twice a year...then I get sick of it real quick....
I usaully quit right about when things get going good....
I will tell you that I fricken hate the hot date expansion pack.
Well, I'm not a hardcore fan... I rented it for my X-box a couple times. I'd like to get it for my PC.
I remember when I first started playing it... I was frustrated as hell. I couldn't get the hang of taking care of my sim... I would let my stats go bad and my sim was constantly passing out, urinating on the floor, throwing fits, and crying because he was lonely. Just a big chain like that, it was pretty funny... he'd pass out, wake up, piss on the floor, throw a fit, cry, his stomach would grumble, etc.
I haven't really been paying attention, what kind of expansion packs do they all have now?... the only one I know of is the superstar expansion.
I used to be a Sims fan. I played for at least 40 hours before getting utterly tired of it. I then started doing strange and unsavory things in the game. I killed my first by turning off free-will and sending him into the street. I made him stay there, pissing and whining until he died. I then made the whole family join him after they received his urn. Other than that, I used some utility to add a custom-skin to a sim. It was from a picture of a friend of mine. The problem was that it was over-exposed and grainy so he looked like a burn-victim in-game. I named him Burn Victim John and made a 9-square house with all the necessities. He was quite happy until his stove burned the rest of his house down.
Really, I thought it was a good/unique game but the expansion packs don't add enough to keep the series running.
I made two hobo sim who lived out in a field.
They owned a black and white TV, and shitbox radio and no pants.
A thief stole the TV.
Then I made my hobos fight each other, then I made them fall in love with each other.
They even kissed each other.
So, out of curiousity, I bought a lovebed for them.
And, lo and behold, they "slept" together.
This got me thinking, if I can have gay hobo Sims, surely I can have HOT LESBIAN SIMS!!
Ten minutes later, my theory was proven correct.
And I've never been happier! ;D
I love the sims, I even made an AGS house with Chris Grund Ghormak and I think m0ds in it. Oh and CLeks for a while.
Its a fun game but it ends up like a virtual dollhouse becaues they don't age or change in any way nor does anything unpredictable happen to them. You have to do everything.
Makes me think if there is a God, s/he must be very bored....
Sims2 is supposed to address this, I hope it does. :)
PS: CJ set the house on fire with his cooking. ::) I have the screenie somewhere. :P
Oh and Grund really liked the pet chicken they had, he kept playing with it. Yes, a pet chicken. It lays eggs and everything. If anyone wants I'll dig out the link for it.
expansion packs:
1) Living Large
2) House Party
3) Hot Date
4) Vacation
5) Unleashed
6) Superstar
7) Makin' Magic
I own 1,2,3,5 plus PS2 Sims
btw, seems every woman i make turns into a lesbian. hmm.
I own all of the expansion packs except Makin' Magic and Vacation. I haven't played in a while, but I do enjoy playing. I like making my own skins for them.
Lorena and me are big fan of the sims, and we're waiting for the sims 2. Each expansion is less playable, but that's not what is really bothering me... I have some kind of dooming. When my Sim is rich, he has a nice house, a nice wife, two children and a dog, something happens (HD master failure or something like that...) and I have to re-start. I know I would backup, but I'm too lazy for that, I just backup my AGS files... After that catastrophe I'm sick of the sims for half a year or so... And then I start again, till the next dooming.
The Sims is fun until they start pissing themselves and moaning about being clastraphobic...
I never really got the hang of it.
It IS fun, though...Worth playing a few times each year as Squinky said.
Well.. the creative side of the game was fun. Building and making custom stuff..
but the actual game left me wanting something better...
I probably spent more time surfing searching for goods than actually playing the game.

Ahem, I'll repeat: HOT LESBIAN SIMS!!!
From the quotefile:
Quote[19:08] <Ghormak> When I played the Sims, somehow I always made all the women bi-sexual.
So yeah, the Sims is nice, but gets boring quickly. It's not much of a game, since they don't age and stuff like that. Sims 2 however should be nice.
/me helps OneThinkingGal hold the "We want Sims 2 now!" sign
For the first time, players control their Sims over an entire lifetime. Every choice that is made has a relevant and dramatic effect on the life of a Sim. More life-like Sims, all-new gameplay, and the ground-breaking addition of genetics, with the DNA of Sims passed down through generations gives players a more vivid, realistic, and in-depth Sims experience. All of this takes place in a new amazingly life-like 3-D world.

Due for release in Early 2004 which means we should have it in December '04.
I forgot to say I have the Sims, Living Large and Hot Date. I like Hot Date actually. That's a hundred dollars already spent on this game.
And I totally agree with Ghost, eventually I was just surfing looking for cooler and cooler stuff and playing less. And it crashed a lot too. :( Bah.
Making stuff for the Sims is fun. Making people fight is fun. I have The Sims and the Hot Date expansion. I think Sims 2 is going to be quite nice. I want to see how they will act in certain situations.
Heh, I too spent way too much time online looking for different items to add to my game. I was up to about 500 downloaded items total and it was causing my game to crash often because of corrupt files, etc. It got to the point where I would use the cheat to get a lot of money, buy everything to get the perfect house, then play and get bored eventually.
yeah, i downloaded like 160 different wallpapers to use. But when i put them into the game, everytime i was building a house and selecting wallpapers, the game would crash right back to the desktop. So i had to delete most of them, but i still have a decent amount to work with. I even used the Sims File Cop, but it didn't find anything wrong.
shawn :)
I once downloaded and elevator and a teleporter that you could put the ends where ever you wanted. I dont have them anymore but they where sweet.
I play the Sims. I have all the expansions and I also have a little dragon who eats my yellow flowers.
:D
I have The Sims +
1) Living Large
2) House Party
3) Hot Date
I personally make a family made of a Dad and a really UGLY and utterly EVIL kid. He would then tease the father and yell at him all the time ;D
I also like making a famiily with 1 dad 2 moms and 1 kid. Then I put them all in one room without exiits or stuff. You wanna know what happens before they die? The guy starts shouting at the kid, the mom bitch-slaps the dad, the other mom bitch-slaps the dad, the mothers bitch-slap eatch other whilst the kid is screaming. Eventually people start pissing all over and the kid has to clean up whilst the parents fight. :D
I'm evil 8)...
P.S
Does anyone else find it disturbing that when a, as an example, geek gets picked on by a big musculous brute, the geek laughs, slaps the brute on the chin, and the brute starts weeping like there's no tomorrow?
Can someone please attempt to justfy to me how they managed to spend money on one of those fucking add-on packs? Or even more than one (as some of you seem to have managed). I mean, seriously; they just contain a few extra graphics/sounds and that's it. They'd be just about acceptable as freely downloadable patches, but for £20 (or $30 or however much they cost in la-la land) it's just inexcusable.
Don't get me wrong, the original game was fine as an expansion upon the whole Little Computer People idea, but EA and Maxis should be choked on their own shit for the way that they've milked it up to now.
QuoteOld Anglo Saxon Dictionary: Sims, the [lat. sim,-us,m.] - An easy way to make a lot of money with minimum effort doing expansion packs
Well i remember when i got my sims... I actually remember reading this great review of a gaming magazine that got me to love the game, and while i was reading the review a friend called me and told me he's just installing them.
Anyway i'm full o them, and they started coming out of my ears with all those expansion packs, and i can't believe people are still buying them....
Allright you've got those 3 basic expansions, BUT SEVEN???!!!
Tho it comes to me once or twice a year to play them :-[
I generally like the game... but things I hate...
Time... look at the time where you sim starts eating until they finish... on average my sim with the smallest meal takes 45 minutes to eat (and they barely get any food) If I eat for 45 minutes I can barely walk...
Trash... I have had a guy eat dinner right by the trashcan... and put the plate on the floor...
Arent they the most whiniest people ever... I mean... jesus... they dont watch enough TV and you would think they were dying... dont call someone on the phone, and they commit suicide (not really but I always wanted them to go into the bathroom and slit their wrists)...
Although... I did spend hours playing the game (BTW its fun getting child welfare to come take your kid then removing all the entraces to where the kid is...

Har, that is the stupidest thing Maxis could have done. One of the biggest selling points of The Sims was that it would run on any PC (my sister used to play it on a P233). By giving Sims 2 such high minimum specs, they've pretty much cut their audience in half. I doubt many middle-aged housewives and young children are gonna upgrade their PCs just to play that one game.
I can't believe people play SIMS, I remember my sister was adicted to the game, I could just never get into it, The only sim type game I ever played was the original simcity, which I got over pretty quick, I just think life is better simulated in real life.
That's just my opinion, I just wondered why this thread was continually up the top.
QuoteI just think life is better simulated in real life.
Of course it is, but in real life you don't make your kids go swimming in the pool and then remove any means of getting out of the pool once they're in it, do you?
I played it a lot before...but then all the obj. and the game started to get boring. So I downloaded some obj. from the interet. Then it got a little more intresting again...
but now...I have it in my computer...but I don't play it ;)
PS! I have never killed a SIMS...never wanted to do that ;)
but no one has a pc below 1GHz anymore anyways?

I played Sims for a few weeks and it never crashed. My sister plays it, and it never crashes. Maybe your PC just doesn't like it.
I swear, Dirrect X went up 5 versons just for The Sims. :) Nwn has a minimum of verson 5, and what are they on now? Nine is it?
i know if i want to run the Sims 2, i would have to invest in a brand new computer.
What are the required specs for that game?
probably P4, 500+ MB of Ram, and i'm thinking a 64mb Video Card?
what are the exact specs?

BuffaloGamer, try reading the whole thread before posting :P
woops, my bad. :(
I made 4 rude, filthy, and mean ninjas that lived with an old man, which they locked in a closet with a chair, for days if they were watching TV
Then, they would let him out and they would follow a strict schedule:
Let man out
Beat him
Give him some 3 day old pizza (if he wants it)
Scare him
Let man shower
Beat him
Make man use potty while being watched
Beat man for not shitting
Make man do chores
Make man make dinner
Let him sleep on the ground
Wake hime up and beat him
And at about 4am we would send him back to the closet, he was a big day ahead of him.
Lounge
But after the man died, it was just a bunch of ninjas fighting and littering...not as fun.
(3 hours later)Wake man, then, beat him
Then it would start over
But there was so many restriction & designing flaws, it wasn't as cool as it could have been (You can't marry a chick if you live with them!?). For Example, My house burst into flames, I'm panicing, I kill my wife, then I start to put it out, then my baby was crying and a welfare worker takes it away because I neglect it :|...oh well, I'm bored of it now.

There was a thread near the back that DG started a while ago, this is from that
Hehe, I remember that.
As an extra note, this was the first Sim I created:
His name is Alfonzo Dude and he is the coolest guy in the neighbourhood.
The above pic is of him wailing on his guitar.
His bio reads: "I am so awesome!"
He owns a huge house with swimming pool, plasma screen TV, basketball court and outdoor gym.
He works as a Treasure Hunter.
His wife used to be married to the next-door neighbours (The Goth family) but she is now Bella Dude.
They got married and she soon gave birth to their son, Luigi Dude, in the bathroom.
This is a pic of him impressing his wife by playing his guitar in his underpants Red Hot Chilli Peppers-style.
And like father, like son:
He totally rules!
I do remember the occasional funny moment in The Sims but that was effing hilarious!
That's nothing. My sims neighborhood features the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They do not have a fridge, so they only eat pizza (of course).
I tried making their home look like a sewer, but I had a hard time, so I just gave them a really awesome house.
OK well, instead of starting a new thread and causing a stink, I've decided to revive this old thread.
I've been regaining interest in The Sims and have read a lot of good things about Sims 2. I love what I see from the Sims 2 preview videos. I canNOT wait for this game to be released in 10 days! I'm definitely going to buy a copy, perhaps even an advance copy somewhere.
Yes, i am really looking forward to the Sims 2 also. I've been checking out the videos and screenshots, and they have me drooling.
I also went out and bought a brand new computer just so i could play this.Ã, Seeing as much time i've invested in the Sims, i can only imagine how much time i'm gonna put into the Sims 2.
Looking forward to Friday the 17th!!
Shawn
I think that the common wave is that the sims is a stopid lame game.... It is, but.... I love it! ;D The thing that is annoying me is that with one with one of the updates when you reach the best position in your work you change of work... annoying!!!11!
P.S. Lorena and me have married today in the Sims! ;)
I just pre-ordered from EBGames.com, and it is scheduled for release on the 14th. Dunno if that's the regular release date, or the preorder release date.
theres a whole new version coming out called the urbs, where the sims go to the city and have to maintain a reputation and stuff, that looks quite fun. i found this out at ea games on he website if anyone is interested.
I believe the Uk release date is the 17th of September. I for one plan to get it as it looks to be a vast improvement on the first game, both in terms of graphics and its playability. Plus you can customise your sims more, so i would expect to see lots of AGSers to be made.
I'm rather sad, I have all the expansion packs. I play them intermittently. Occassionally I play it seriously, and make loadsa money and get a nice house, but more often than not I just fool around with it. I like to put in all my real life friends, and make them all love/hate each other. Or just leave them to it and see what happens.
I'm quite looking forward to Sims 2, but goodness knows if my computer can handle it. Ah well, we're getting a new computer fairly soon anyway. Hopefully it'll be able to manage it.
Edit: Just downloaded the doo-hickey that checks your computer's specs for you, and it seems my humble computer should be able to play the Sims 2. Woo!
Yeah, I was looking ito The Urbz, but I couldn't find much information on it. From what I gather, it's a console-only game, thus the awesome advanced graphics, but otherwise appearance-wise it looks like Sims 2 technology. Since I can't find a PC version on www.EBGames.com, I'll stick with Sims 2. I can't wait to see what kind of extensions will be available for TS2. I'm already downloadinig content for TS2 from http://sims2.thesimsresource.com/ and have about 200+ MB worth of content already. :P
Sorry to bump this up, but I received my Sims 2 Preview CD the other day and I'm lookng at the videos and interviews and introductions. One video blew me away and put everything into perspective.
The narrator created Don, who fell in love with Dina, then Kerry (?), and then Angela (I forgot the names, let's just use those for now). In the end, Don truly fell in love with Angel and married her. This was shown using the Movie Maker feature, which I want to try out.
Anyway, next the narrator showed us their lives together now, and their son's birthday party, an important milestone. What played out next was something out of a movie, where the narrator showed us the Fears and Aspirations of the Sim Don. One of Don's aspirations was to talk...simply talk...to Dina, who happened to be at the party (she's apparently now a family friend through Don). He showed us Angela's sister, who looked just like her sister would in real life. Same hair, different style, slightly older. It was amazing. We also see that one of Angela's Fears is being cheated on.
Then, the narrator decided to play out Don as himself and talk to Dina. They talked. Suddenly, we see one of Don's Aspirations change, and now he wants to Flirt with Dina. Okay, so we do. They're inside now, in a living room area. Next, that Aspiration changes so that now he wants to Cuddle with Dina. Narrator decides to continue, despite the social ramifications if they are caught, and cites how lucky they are that they are in private. So they Cuddle. Now that Aspiration changes into Kiss Dina. So we do. As they make out (rather excitedly and animatedly, by the way), Angela's sister comes in, sees them, and freaks out silently. Showing their semi-intelligence, she now knows about this situation and, on her own, goes to tell Angela outside, who starts to cry.
The narrator then makes Don apologize to Angela. It seems to work...until Dina runs outside and ruins everything by giving Don and short but passionate lovers' kiss. Angela has just had one of her Fears realized, and starts to lose it, dropping on the floor, and sitting there cryng and screaming. Then, Angela brawls with Dina, defending her sister's honor, while Don watches and cheers.
The narrator then zooms out, wrapping up the genetics and realism of The Sims 2. I would suggest anybody that pre-orders/pre-ordered TS2 also get the free (pay for shipping only) Preview CD. It's amazing. :)
Yeh ive seen that video too and my thoughts were exactly the same. There are so many more possibilities compared to the original game. Ive also preordered a copy. I think it will arrive on friday, zing!
I don't like the SIMS. I just thought I might as well say it here, because I haven't been able to say it anywhere else. As a matter of fact, I HATE the SIMs. It seems to me like the ultimate life-copy game... but life isn't really that exciting unless we make it exciting. If I want to go on a date, get kids, make a house, I actually do it. I play games - adventure games - to live other lives, participate in stories. The SIMs has no real plot, and doesn't appeal to me.
Out of curiosity, am I the only one to think this?
redruM, i would have to agree with you about this. I found that the only part of the Sims that really appealed to me was the house design, because this was a way to express my creativity. But once this stage was over simply placing some items like fish tanks, or a new TV really did'nt excite me.
I fear that GrandTheftAuto, which i used to find quite fun is going in the same direction. I mean, mow your own lawn... whats up with that?
You two make valid points. That is true with The Sims 1. I found that after creating the house, it all went downhill from there. The add-on paks were the only things that would keep me playing.
But wth TS2, I have a feeling it's only going to improve. The Sims is a different type of game. There is no real plot; you play it just for entertainment, maybe one or two hours, then you're done with it and move on. It's not like a Space Quest or a Monkey Island where it keeps you glued for hours.
And that's why The Sims is a money-maker: ultmate replayability. You never get the same scenario twice. Unless of course you make it happen that way.
How to torture your sims to death. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/nematoddity/133711.html)
I was able to get into the sims at one time in my life, and that was when we had to drive from Oklahoma to Florida and there was nothing else to do in the van besides read a book for the third time or argue with my siblings.
That website brings back memories.
only bad things about the sims 2 is that they're using SafeDisc 3, which unfortunately is becoming popular, it "blacklists" certain cd emulation software so that if the game detects it running, it won't load until you've disabled it, which if you ask me is just asking for people to crack your software, i don't know why the makers of these virtual cd programmes (it's mostly CloneCD users that have problems with it) don't take legal action against the makers of SafeDisc 3 (Macromedia i think)...
another sucky thing is that there are no signs of a Special Edition DVD version of the game on any of the british stores, the links on thesims2.com just link to american stores, and amazon.com won't ship the dvd edition to the uk, which sucks...
I've never really understood the beauty of Sims, but then again I've never tried it.
Can you do interesting, funky stuff, like robbing a bank, becoming a world famous lute player, etc, or is it just about getting a family, buying a house and paying the mortgage? Can you skip doing the dishes without your children dying from bacterial diseases?
Is it a mere substitute for those in lack of a real social life, or can everybody enjoy it?
Andail,
The Sims is a unique game.Ã, There is really no way to explain WHAT it is that makes it so fun.Ã, It's like Sim City, you look at it and think "What could POSSIBLY be so fun about building a city?"Ã, But then you try it out and realize, for some reason it is fun.
Basically you can do pretty much anything you want with your sims.Ã, I'd suggest giving it a try, but personally, I would wait for The Sims 2.Ã, I'm quite certain it's going to be the BEST Sims game in history.
Did you ever play Jones in the fast lane??? The sims is like a REALLY hugh version of that game. You get to pursue goals, careers and buy awesome stuff for your Sims. And you don't have to sit around and watch them eat, wash dishes and sleep. There is a fast foward button.
I think part of the fun in enjoying the sims is just creating and decorating the house they live in.Ã, I really enjoyed just playing for hours on end designing the perfect house and then decorating the way i would want my own place to look like.
It looks like in the Sims 2 that you can build the ultimate dreamhouse for your sims. I guess now you can have up to 3 floors.
I love the gameplay aspect of the game, but for me the whole building aspect is the best part.
Just hoping to get myself a copy when it comes out and then kissing my real life good bye.
There's a DVD version? Oh, and I just got an email from EBGames saying it shipping already! And I should be receiving it this afternoon, which means it's really being released on the 14th, not the 17th like they said. I love it when release dates are pulled instead of pushed. ;)
Also, everybody here talks about open-endedness in games. I think the Sims 1 (and even more so in 2) is a perfect example of an open-ended game. No end, really, except for death. There aren't really any puzzles, but the game itself is one big puzzle: life.
As for the debate about having a real life vs. playng The Sims... just because a game simulates life doesn't mean that it's a substitute for life.
It's just a game.
ADDITION:
And on that note...at 11:15 AM today, I received:

I called EB Games today to find out when they would have it on store shelves.Ã, Looks like they'll have it tomorrow 9/14.
I guess i know what i'm doing tomorrow when i get out of work.Ã, It sucks that i have to wait until after 5 o'clock to go buy it.
Reviews on the Sims2 so far look really promising.Ã, I've seen a 5/5, an 8.9 out of 10 and also an 9.4 out of 10.

Well said! The same goes for an adventure game. Just because an adventure game simulates adventure doesn't mean it's players lack excitement in their lives.
Was there ever such a debate? As I recall, the only thing said was that, in it's quest for simulating real life, it became boring for some players, who couldn't be bothered to achieve something in a game they would rather achieve in real life. And these gamers may think thus - "Why should I waste my time playing a game that simulates everything I can do in real life THAT perfectly? Sure, it's a WONDROUS achievent, to be sure, but I'd rather play games to be taken away to Syberia or Komkolzgrad, or Arcadia."
But then, I never did like the Tamagotchis myself, I have my own pets. And I do believe that The Sims is nothing but the ultimate (so far!) Tamagotchi.

Are you being completely honest here?
Because regarding adventure games, that fits quite well for me....I play games when no interesting things happen in my real life.
Since this game simulates dating, making money, friends etc, I'm very tempted to believe that its biggest audience are the ones who lack these things in real life.
I'm not saying everybody, just the target audience.
It's just an assumption. Maybe I will eat up my own words the day I try this game and becomes obsessed by it :)
I had The Sims and house party expansion (I think it was called like that).
Also, I download a whole bunch of stuff from the internet when the game got boring with the items that were in it. I don't have Sims anymore, I'm thinking of downloadinging it again! :D
Hmm. Some might take offence to that. Not that I do, but still. The thing with The Sims is that it lets people play God, basically. You create people, control their lives, run them through their rat mazes. The target audience, to me, is the people who like to create and control. This game is a way of doing this. I don't think I know of anybody that fits into your category, Andail. The people I've known that played the Sims and liked it were average people with their own lives, loves, friends, jobs, things to do. They played it as a hobby, a game. And to tell the truth, I don't play adventure games when I lack excitement in my life. I play them mainly for the story. Do people read books because their lives are boring? No, I believe we read books for the entertainment, the use of imagination, and the story. :)
The question now becomes...what do I do with The Sims 1 and the three expansion paks I bought for it? They have become obsolete and no fun. :P
Sell the game and buy the online version! ;D
The online Sims version is like 10000 times cooler, it's like real life.
Anyway, about that you play "god" part, It is kinda like that, but for me it's just fun to live an computer life with some guy just like in real life. I don't see anything bad in that.
I'm sorry if this has been said, but did anyone notice the oh-so-lame i-too-want-to-be-top-selling game Singles: Flirt up your life which could be used as a softcore pr0n?
Gotcha, Terran.
I take back what I said :)
I guess I shouldn't question the value of something I'm yet to try

The thing with The Sims is that it lets people play God, basically.
Well, the way I see the Sims is as a cover up for all people (mostly teens and adults) to have an excuse to play with the "doll house" or LEGO bricks, now that they're older.
You see, they are now "adult" and can't be seen around playing with toys, so they use the
more sociably acceptable way to do it, playing a video game.
The god thing, well, that's more of a wider fact, and ofcourse true.
Hmm, gotta go to sleep... Hard day tomorrow.
It's a business, so why shouldn't the developers of the singles try and get a foot in there before the sims 2 was released? :P

As for the debate about having a real life vs. playng The Sims... just because a game simulates life doesn't mean that it's a substitute for life.
Well said!Ã, The same goes for an adventure game.Ã, Just because an adventure game simulates adventure doesn't mean it's players lack excitement in their lives.
...I play games when no interesting things happen in my real life.
Since this game simulates dating, making money, friends etc, I'm very tempted to believe that its biggest audience are the ones who lack these things in real life.
I'm not saying everybody, just the target audience.
Does this mean that the only people who play first person shooters are bloodthirsty mass murders and sadists???
I don't personally think so. But I do agree that there are some people use The Sims as compensation for lack of a life.
But everybody has different reasons for playing the games they play.
I'm not trying to challange you in a flame war or anything, I'm just raising a point. ;) And don't feel lame or loser-like for wanting to give it a try. It can be really fun at times. :)
QuantumRich:
Tell us all about the game!!!!!! Here are a few of my questions:
1. How long does it take kids to turn to teens and teens into adults etc...?
2. Can you buy cars for your sims?
3. Are there any cool weather or season effects???
Here is a pic from the Sims2 with a Sim that i just created.Ã, Here she is eating some chips. (Damn!! I made her gorgeous.Ã, ;D)

looks like she got caught off guard stuffing her face. ha ha
like i always say, don't knock it, until you try it.

I'm still in the middle of building her home, and by the pics, haven't added much of anything.
OOOOOOOOOOHHH MUST HAVE!!!!!!
Hey, does the video recorder work really great???
Looks like you need to buy your sim some lights in her house!! ;)
I will use the video recorder in the future to show you all what it's like, as well as some screenshots.
Sims2 is pretty neat. When you create your Sim, you can choose what category of aspirations (s)he will have, like Romance Asprations, Family Aspirations, Money Aspirations, etc. Throughout the game, the Sim, at any one time, will have four aspirations. Once you fulfill one of these Asprations, you get a certain number of points (gaining a skill is 500 points, while having a baby is 8,000 points), and one or more of the Aspirations change. And the Aspirations actually make sense. Once you meet another Sim and get along with him/her, your Sim might have one of his/her Aspirations change to "Become Friends Wth So-and-So".
An example: I created a household (a small, modest two-floor house) with a guy and a girl, Kevin and Jennifer Hess. When I first created them, I had their Family Relationship set at "Roommates". Of course, it can change, so over time I had them become friends, then best friends, then crushes, then loves. They are now married. There are days of the week, Sims have days off from work, and it takes about 40 days for a Sim to go from Adult to Elder. So far, I have 22 days to go until we become elders and, most like, can't have kids.
An interesting note: you can no longer move families into empty lots and build there. Now, you can build on an empty lot without any family there, then move in. You don't have any money limit when building, but once you move in, the family has to pay whatever amount it cost to build the house. This way, you can make a 1,000,000-Simolian house, and have a rich family move in there. Of course, families still start with 20,000, so you're still limited that way.
Here is my tour of the game and the Hess household, while both Sims are at work...
http://www.terran-x.com/images/01_loadinggame.jpg
This is the loading screen for the entire game. The farther it is into loading fully, the more square become clear. There are a lot of little graphical nuances like these that make the game interesting.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/02_neighborhoodchoose.jpg
This is the screen where you choose what neighborhood you want to play. These are the only three, and they show as animating videos for each button, much like a DVD movie menu screen. There's Pleasantville, Strangeland, and Veronaville. Pleasantville looks something like a soap opera town, Strangeland is like Roswell, and Veronaville is of course Verona from Romeo and Juliette, complete with...
http://www.terran-x.com/images/03_veronaville.jpg
...matching storyline, with the Capps and the Montys (Capulets and Montagues). So far, my Sims have interacted with the parents (or grandparents?) of the Capp family, Patrizio and his wife (forgot her name). I think you can control either the Capp or the Monty family if you want, but I decided to go with a custom family moving into the neighborhood.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/04_loadingveronaville.jpg
This is the loading screen for the neighborhood. The top lit bars act like a progress bar, showing you how far along the neighborhood is loaded. Once it loads, there is a short fly-by video that shows most of the neighborhood.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/05_neighborhoodscene.jpg
This is the area around my house, the Hess house.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/06_hesspreview.jpg
Once I click on the Hess house, it shows a little preview window with my two Sims and some info. When my Sims were only roommates, they were shown as buddies, posing together, facing the camera, smiling. Now that they're married, they look more like a couple. Like I said, lots of little details added to make it better overall.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/07_firstfloor.jpg
Thiis is the first floor of the Hess house. The kitchen/dining room, small bathroom, and party area are here, along with the back deck.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/08_secondfloor.jpg
And this is the second floor, complete with main bathroom, TV/study area, and two bedrooms. Now that they're married I have to merge the bedrooms (and perhaps get more room for something else) so that they can share a bed and "Woo-hoo", as the Sims2 calls it. :P
http://www.terran-x.com/images/09_farhousekevinaspirations.jpg
This is a wide shot of the house, switched so that all walls and roofs show. This also shows Kevin's Aspirations. His meter is white, which is called the Platinum Mood.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/10_closeuphousebabyponts.jpg (Yes, it's misspelled on my server, too.)
This is the closest I can zoom in to the interior of the house. This also shows Jennifer's Aspirations. You can also see that Jennifer's meter is yellow, which is called Gold Mood. My mouse was held over the "Have a Baby" Aspiration, showing the points that it would add. What are the point for, you ask?
http://www.terran-x.com/images/11_aspirationrewards.jpg
You get rewards for a certain number of points. I kept wasting them on Money Trees (which literally grow money and you have to water to maintain), so I have to accumulate enough points for the higher rewards. I have about 3 of those NoodleStimulators, which are supposed to do something to you when worn. I haven't noticed any difference. Above that is some milk machine to make babies/kids smarter, and some other stuff.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/12_jenjob1.jpg
Suddenly, this thing pops up. Randomly, I get to choose the course of my Sims' careers. Before, I could choose to tell Jen's boss about an investment deal, or go for it on my own. I chose to tell my boss, which earned me a promotion, a raise, and a boost in a skill or two. For this decision (go for Telemarketing or Door-to-Door sales), I choose telemarketing...
http://www.terran-x.com/images/13_jenjob2.jpg
...and, of course, it was the wrong choice. I piss people off and lose all my Charisma skills (3 points, gone). It takes a long time to gain Charisma, standing in front of a mirror, talkinig to myself. Jeez.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/14_whatiswoohoo.jpg
This describes one of Kevin's (of course) Asprations, which is to "Woo-hoo" with Jennifer. It describes what I need to do, which is get into a hot tub or same bed, cuddle, then woo-hoo.
http://www.terran-x.com/images/15_kevintimeforbed.jpg
Kevin has just come home from work. Everytime he comes home, he is dead tired and sleeps during the afternoon, while Jennifer sleeps normally, at night, when Kevin is awake. I want their sleeping patterns to match, so now that Kevin has two days off from work, I will try to synchronize their sleeping patterns.
But I have homework to do, so I'll lay off the Sims for now. :P
Wow, it looks really cool. I want to get it but I fear that it will eat up into too much of my time. I really need to focus on uni and assignment and stuff first.
Sounds amazing, rich! Odd that I didn't notice this thread before, as I quite like the Sims, and wanted sims 2 very bad when it was first announced. I had no idea it was out already, I had forgotten about it :P. These new improvements sounds amazing. Too bad there's no mention of an option for pets, as I thought Sims unleashed was a bit lacking in the addition of pets. Maybe us people who consider pets members of the family aren't really a majority ;).
Looking forward to see more screenshots and info from you :).
I'll definetly create an AGS house once I get it :D.
Btw, is the family members limit still 8? Or can you have more? I also heard a family can own two houses/lots.
edit: Also wanted to note, isn't 40 days kinda fast for the sims to die? adulthood would be expected to be the longest period. Is there a way to change it? I know there's a cheat to stop aging completely, but that defeats the purpose.
Progress Report: Father recently died, just adopted a second child (making a small household with 2 adults, 3 teenagers and 2 children), 2 of the teenagers are in lurrrve
Well, you've convinced me, it is time for the bi-annual call to the local "provider" for some games and movies....
I guess i should take these sims2, then i want to take Oggy and the cockroaches, Maybe the Simpsons (1-3 episodes maybe, these DVDs are expensive, 4$ a piece),
anyone heard of a series called kung fu?
Oh yeah, The Flight simulator, i always wanted to play those...
etc. etc.
Next one will be the kotor 2 and gta3:san andreas.
Czar: GTA3? More like GTA5 :P
Oh, and just because their adulthood lasts 40 days doesn't mean their life does. If a Sim starts off as adult, there's that 40 day period (or is it 30?), then (s)he becomes an elder. How long they live after that is up to how healthy they are, what kind of a life they've led, etc. They can die of natural causes.
I made a one-minute movie at medium resolution (320x240) with sound, and it took up over 7 MB. I'm going to try again, this time wthout sound, and see how big it is.
I can't wait till tomorrow!!!!! WHEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
Hey Rich, can you tell the difference between the voices of elders adults and teens?

Then I don't recommend it. It takes the hours away from you so fast. You will be sucked in. Just buy it when you are done your assignment or w/e. Besides, then the price will have lowered.
Just a simple update.Ã, My sim likes to read in her underwear. he he

I'm not gonna be the one to tell her no.Ã, :)
It's in Wal-Mart now! I got my copy last night and it is GREAT! ;D
Sorry going OT but i feel i must correct this
QuantumRich: GTA:SA is not GTA5, if we were to number un numbered sequels (london, vice city and san andreas) it would be 6.. however Rockstar have said that VC and SA are not proper sequels and GTA4 will most likely be on a next gen system.
I'm beginning to like this game a lot. So I'm just gonna ask, how much does this game cost anyway?
I hope it's not too expensive, then I'd have to choose between a new skateboarding deck or Sims 2, ofcouse I'd choose Sims 2!!! ;D ;)
In the USA, i paid $49.99. I don't know what prices in other countries.
I have the Sims 2 now! Goodbye real life! (j/k)
I got it for £34-99, but I had a £10 voucher, yay me!
I hope people who buy this game can run it.Ã, I've read on other forums where people are having crashes left and right and the game not working at all.
Lucky for me the game runs pretty good, unless i go into story mode to view snap shots, and then BAM!! Crash.
People are waiting for patches to fix all the problems and bugs that this game contains.Ã, But still, it is alot of fun.
My girl sim married another girl sim, and oh yeah.
:)
Girl marriage? hehe.
:P
Anyway, I'm hoping to get the game for christmas (over two months left :-\)
I don't have any money at the moment, that sucks.
I went to an computer game store today, it hasn't arrived there yet. I hope it gets there by christmas! ;)
My copy runs fine. The only time I have a problem is if I shrink the game to the desktop and then maximize it again. Then it restarts my computer. Other than that the game runs great.
And I LLLOOOVVVEEE IT!!!!!!!

Try updating your graphics drivers if you have any probs. It kept freezing on me before I upgraded.
Ok, I have acquired this game, and just started, after some tedious "learn how to play" lessons.
The funniest part so far was to make your own characters.
I made myself:

Also, by pure chance, 2ma2 appeared on the screen:
Have you done any recognisable people?
I'm just wondering, has anybody who owns the game ever been able to run it at any resolution higher than 800x600? Like, say, 1024x768?
I like the 2ma2, Andail, but the nose is waaaay too big on you.

I've been running it under 1024x768 without any problems even with a crappy card like mine. Sapphire ATi Radeon 9600 atlantis 128mb :P
How? I can't even FORCE it to run at 1024x768. I only have the option to use 800x600 from within the game, and I even tried to use the "-" switch command after the file name in a shortcut to force it at 1024x768, but it still runs at 800x600. Was it an option in-game for you, Haddas?
Has anyone found that it messes with your internet settings? After I've been playing the game, my internet options have been set to 'never connect'. This happens every time I play the Sims 2. It's a nuisance have to change it back after so I can use the internet.

Yes, it's an option in-game, although it was already on 1024x768 by default for me.
Weird. I have to try to figure this thing out. I want it to play at 1024x768... I even updated my graphic card's drivers from Dell.com and everything. Hmm.
EDIT: And yes, they hired different actors for the elders, adults, and teens. Even the toddlers and babies (obviously). They had like 2-3 times the number of actors. Damn, now I wanna play it again. :P
I used to have the sims and the first three expansion packs. Then I lent them out and forgot who i lent them to. Now i eagerly await the sims 2 for christmas.

QuoteHas anyone found that it messes with your internet settings?
Pelican: YES!Ã, I have no idea why it does that, but it's extraordinarily irritating.Ã, I hadn't linked the IE screw up to the Sims yet, so thanks for pointing out the cause for me.Ã, I assumed I'd fixed the problem with IE, but now I know it's because I haven't played the game for the past couple of days. :P
And how about some links to people's stories on the Exchange, if they've done any?Ã, Here's one for y'all:
clicky clicky (http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/story_detail.php?asset_id=1310&asset_type=story&user_id=236461)
I too play it a few times a year, but it always gets on my nerves. It just devolves into the game of capitalism...buy more and better stuff to make your idiots happy. And while I love Monopoly, and silly things like "morals" rarely prevent me from playing such wholesome games as GTA3, playing the sims for too long just makes me feel dumb.
Oh my God, Nellie, that is one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen in my life. ;D Frickin' funny as all hell!
hey i LOVE the sims
this one time my sim died and (because im a cheater) i deleated death and
my dead sim was just lying there and there was a spooky sound that i couldnt get rid of it but it was all good :)
One thing that profoundly disturbs me is that the game has to be so hip and funky.
I try to create some sort of introvert, half-crazy scientist/politician as a character, living in a murky house with mostly bookshelves as furniture.
Regardless, five minutes into the game, there is a teenage party in my livingroom.
I guess this game is aimed at a younger audience, or people who like to lead an extremely social life. Anyway, I still don't see what the game is about. I built a character and a house, but so far, the gameplay is about leading him to the bathroom and back, watch him eat, watch him sleep...then he is off to work, and I have to fast-forward the game until he returns.
I guess you're expected to hit off with your neighbours, select a girl and start trying to pick her up. If you're not interested in that, the game will be rather empty of meaning, right?
that all depends on your creativity :P
I tried the bathroom/eat/work game experience a while and one moment I just kinda went psycho :P not funny I know, but the boredom finally got to me I killed my wife and after that I just tried to fill my yard with as manny tombstones as possible, er... am I the only one that does that?
...I should go into therapy again, right? :P
Having the ultimate frredom to mould a character to work as you wany them to would be great but the amount of scripting and the high quality of the AI in the game is probably unatainable as so far. I beleive that this freedom while great for the hardcore fanatic would alienate the mainstream audiance a fair bit. Although I would love to see this happen and create my own rich Socialite by day, serial killer\criminal mastermind by night, it will probaly be a fair wait.

Alec

:D
QuantumRich: Thanks! :=
Andail: Yeah, the Sims seems to have a contradictory dual purpose. On the one hand, the designers claim it's good for 'sandbox' (freedom to do what you like) play, while on the other, they put in quite a strict system of needs that require you to make all of your sims pursue the same type of activities to prevent them being screwed up.
QuoteI guess you're expected to hit off with your neighbours, select a girl and start trying to pick her up. If you're not interested in that, the game will be rather empty of meaning, right?
The game is empty of meaning by default, really, and the point is to make of it what you want. For example, the appeal to me is to create some unusual characters in a neighbourhood, get them to interact, then improvise a story for them all in storytelling mode. The very first time I tried to play the Sims (original), I went the ordinary route of: go to work, get the girl, meet the neighbours, etc. and it bored the hell out of me. Now the 'purpose' of the game for me is to create some strange soap-opera/sitcom hybrid in storytelling mode, and hopefully entertain my friends and a few random strangers on the 'net. :)
I see. My biggest mistake was probably to create and run only one character, as if it was an adventure game, or solo rpg, and await something interesting to happen.
The strength is in the interaction between several sims, I guess.
Well, I don't have the time to play it much more, but it was an original gaming experience, I guess.
Something you could try are creating a house full of guys (roommates) and have different, conflicting traits. Use the zodiac thing that's somewhere in the game to see which signs conflict with whom and which are matches. Put in some conflict. Make your Sim(s) do negative things to others, such as tease, brag, etc., which will put the "friendship" at a negative and allow you to do other nastier things. I wonder if you can murder another Sim... would be interesting...
Hmmm... The Sims 2: Big Brother :P
As much as i love the Sims 2, i've gotten quite bored of it.Ã, Which also happened many times while playing the first Sims.
But another game which i am really looking forward too is Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, which is now fully 3D and the demo is amazing.
So any tycoon fans out there who enjoy building amusement parks.Ã, This is something you should check out.Ã, Download the demo and give it a whirl.Ã, This looks to be a real promising title.Ã, You can find the demo somewhere on the RCT3 site.
http://www.atari.com/rollercoastertycoon/
Shawn
Funny, I haven't gotten sick of Sims 2 yet. Maybe because I've been takinig it easy, qutting before I get bored of it.
Man, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 looks superb. For the first time one of these games is going to have a coaster cam that genuinely gives you a sense of speed and disorientation. I hated the cams in Theme Park World and that naff Disney roller coaster builder thing.
I just know when I eventually get the game I'll be downloading everybody else's rollercoasters and 'riding' them for kicks.
By the way, if you rename one of the TutorialX.dat files to 'Demo.dat' and put it in the main installation folder, you can play on the tutorial maps (ie, completely empty landscape) for 45 minutes rather than the demo map, plus you get unlimited funds. But remember to backup your original 'Demo.dat' file somewhere.
Wow.
This is what keeps capitalism rollin.
Don't worry. Soon they'll develop a Das Kapital Expansion Pack for their out-of-reach audience, including all Marxists, beatniks, and bong-toting hippies.
On a frightening note, I bought Sims 2 and noticed my guy playing on his computer. Aimee, my younger sister and famed AGS game reviewer, walked into my room, looked at the game and said, "That's fucking sad! You're playing a computer game about a guy who plays a computer game!"
In the end, it will be impossible to distinguish the playing man from the man he plays.
Yes, that was said in the "gosh-I-hope-somebody-quotes-this" kind of voice.

Anyway, sims 2 is awesome. There's a lot of stuff to do. Every time I think i'm about to get bored of it I discover a new aspect of the game.
I dunno. If people aren't having sex with their dogs and baiting policemen and burning out on metamphetamenes at age 30, it's not realistic enough for me.
People also have to spend entire days alphabetizing they're CD collections for no apparent reason. And then masturbating to Joni Mitchel 8 tracks. And then eating cheetoes and veging out in front of the television until they pass out on the couch. And then they have to roll off the couch onto the floor and crawl half-way to the bathroom before falling asleep again, and then around 4 in the morning getting to the bathroom to throw up and masturbate and brush their teeth, and then weeping in a tiny ball on the toilet until morning when they bus off to their meaningless desk job. But with robots.
Bspeers, I heard there's an expension pack just like that, ready to hit the shelves.
It will be called "Live like a bulimic aspberger-patient who thinks he is a rock-star"
I had to do it... :P
And an update: still not sick of Sims 2 yet. My "Big Brother"/"Real World" experience is fun so far. I keep forgetting to take snapshots to make an oh-so-funny scrapbook online for all to see. :)

By the way, EA is the publisher. Maxis is the Developer of the Sims and Sims 2, and i find nothing wrong with the game. It only expands greatly on the wonderful game that is the Sims.
Now, let's leave this thread to die peacefully.
Thank You
Just a note to Nellie and anyone who found that the Sims 2 messed with their internet settings. There's a patch on the Maxis website now which seems to sort it. Was really starting to annoy me!
I get a urge to play sims/sims2 sometimes. After about 2 days of playing, i get really bored with it, and uninstall.
Good Day, Walshy reporting. I first played the SIMS 2 a few months ago and I was blown away...for the first day. I tried to build a themed house (medieval) just like in the SIMS 1 but in the process, the parents of the house worked so much that they left their 2 year old son alone on his birthday and neglected their aspirations. It truly is a great game (Strangetown is really cool) but I don't have a good enough reason to play it again. Maybe the UNIVERSITY expansion of the SIMS 2 could be a good reason to play it again seeing as I'm in University this year
Quote from: Walshy on Wed 09/02/2005 00:24:18Maybe the UNIVERSITY expansion of the SIMS 2 could be a good reason to play it again seeing as I'm in University this year
Oh wow! I never even noticed that. I don't visit Maxis' web site at all. Not since I tried to make up lyrics to a Simlish song ("360") and lost my mind in doing so. :P But this looks good. i will definitely buy it. Perhaps it'll make TS2 worth playing again. :P
And I know what you mean, sedriss, about playing it for awhile, then uninstallng it, etc. all over again. I did that with The Sims 1 all the time, it's like a never-ending cycle. :P
