Title: Sprite creation methods
Post by: Oliwerko on Sun 28/01/2007 18:30:14
Hi there!

I hope this is the right thread.

I was just wondering wht are the most popular sprite creation methods.
Do you draw them by hand, scan and colour it ?
Or do you draw the outline freehand and then you clear it?
Do you draw them pixel-by-pixel ?

Those are all equally valid and popular methods.

There's really no right way to do this so just do it and post to the crit lounge and ask for help if this is your first time.

If you think drawing it on paper and scanning it will help you make a sprite, give it a shot. If you think you can just pixel it from scratch, go ahead. Whatever works for you.

If you want my advice, I'd agree with MrColossal and say whatever suits you. If you draw better by hand, then try to scan a drawing and pixel it.

You could also look for reference pics. Thats a good place to start, as it helps with poses for your characters. I wouldn't directly paint over a pic off the net tho, could be hard to animate.

Thanks for advices  ;)

I think I'll try to draw by hand later, but now I found a good method for me:

To open a picture of a character from another game just next to the white canvas which is going to be my character. -In photoshop. It's not a paintover, but I feel I'm learning...

lo_res can be quite tricky to translate from picture to final art. often you have to get away from your  pencil idea, but it is a good way to get more accurate details, since you  can take a pod o' paper, and use any source for referencing , not just web stuff.
