Anybody interested in playing some good old StarCraft? I've been playing for some time now and I really love playing it as well as following the pro-scene in Korea etc.
Somebody interested in a friendly match?
Over at iccup.com you can even download a version for free (legally) and play online, so there's no reason NOT to play... :D
I'm not a total newbie anymore but still far away from mastering anything, please don't be shy or discouraged, this game is always fun.
If we get a few players together, we could even do a mini tournament maybe? Also, I can cast (commentate) games and upload them in HD to youtube for others to watch etc.
Starcraft 1 is free now? Perhaps since I've got nothing else better to do with this horrible temp computer I'm using, I'll see if Starcraft can run on it.
If it works, once I beat the campaign (beat it several times in my younger years), perhaps I'll try playing online. :P
The free version on iccup doesn't allow you to play the campaign, for that you'll need to spend the 5 bucks in a real shop. :D It just allows online playing on the iccup servers.
StarCraft runs on almost any system btw., it's really, really low-spec.
Not right now now, but it'd be cool to play StarCraft against people that I (kinda) know online if this became a regular thing! I don't have a cool internet connection, but I can't imagine StarCraft needs that much bandwidth?
Except, you know, I'm kinda the worst StarCraft player in the world. As in, it's actually more challenging playing against an AI Zerg player than it is playing against me. I've won a couple of LAN StarCraft matches before, but that was all through sheer luck or people playing as factions they don't usually play as to even the score a bit.
But hey, I've even got the StarCraft Battlechest sitting here (I just went and got it from the shelf) and it's the second time I've opened it, and realized it has stuff like the expansion pack and Official Strategy Guides and even a technology tree chart (Sweet Jesus I love charts and crap for games :D)! So I got all the gear I need, I think, and it'd be cool to get my bum kicked thoroughly online by other AGS people ;)
QuoteThe free version on iccup doesn't allow you to play the campaign
Ya, I've already noticed that. :(
I played a few maps that came with the iccup version. I also remembered how much I didn't like playing Starcraft against the ai. I forgot that I usually played team co-op with my twin brother against friends, or sometimes the ai. Team co-op allows you to move speeds similar to the ai. But it did have it's drawbacks, resources always being depleted by my brother just when I was about to build something important (or vise versa).
Sometimes when I played I used to make custom maps and disable things like:
On Terran: Nukes and the Battle Cruiser upgrade (the one that gives the battle cruiser that large reach blast).
Zerg: the flying Guardian with his long range attack
Protoss: the Reaver with his long range ground attacks (the thing that looked like a big caterpillar)
Ya, pretty much anything the computer could kill me with easily because it's able to do things 10x faster than I can. I can't take advantage of all those long range attacks like they can, so I may as well just disable it. And when the AI was Terran, they would overuse the nukes all the damn time.
I think there was also a patch or something that would allow you to increase the maximum amount of men, beyond 200.
Ahh... those were the days.
From the few Starcraft matches I've played, it's always been all about speed. Frantic clicking right from the word go and no stopping until someone types 'gg'.
I have a friend who has forced me to watch a dude named Bisu play, and if I remember correctly those dudes click a couple of times a second. The LAN matches I've played have always been a very intense experience.
Still, I'm not much of a player, and I can't play that fast ;D
Yeah, it's the speed issue that discourages me from playing these real-time strategy games more than very casually.
It's basically the same with battle of middle earth, and warcraft 2, or any similar game; once people have discovered the best strategies, it's all about executing said strategies as fast as possible. Just makes me stressed.
Blessed turn-based strategies ;D
Seriously, once I discovered turn-based ones, it's hard to return to any realtime strategy game.
Ah... I have so many good memories with playing Starcraft. I think it was one if the first games I played on a LAN.
The laughed at me as I told them, that I prefer to play the zerg, but they screamed when they saw my army of guardians...

Seconded. It's also less stressful (same for online rapid chess vs. turn based servers)!
I've played Fantasy General a lot online back in the days, but it was all a cumbersome PBEM.
Quote from: Helme on Thu 29/10/2009 09:31:52

Yeah, the zurrg were unfair, but it wasn't the guardians that made it so: it was the zurglings!
Nothing quite like eating their four or so marines with a swarm of 20 zurglings when the game is two minutes in.
Okay, great, there seems to be some interested here.
Of course, we can start out by teaming up on an AI or something, co-op, if there's too big of skill difference or something.
QuoteI have a friend who has forced me to watch a dude named Bisu play, and if I remember correctly those dudes click a couple of times a second. The LAN matches I've played have always been a very intense experience.
Yeah, Bisu is a beast, Korean top Protoss player. His APM (actions per minute, how speed is measured in SC) is 300-500. You can easily calculate how many times he clicks a second. :D
QuoteYeah, it's the speed issue that discourages me from playing these real-time strategy games more than very casually.
I can totally understand this. Speed comes with practice though. Plus, StarCraft is a game where a low APM player can easily win against a high APM one just by going for an all-in strategy (dark templar rush for example).
Anyways, so, anybody up for some playing? Please leave a note here saying that you want to play and when you have time, and make it bold so it stands out from the rest of the discussion on the game!
I tried playing a bit today.
Not so much rusty as... well... disintegrated. Still, I'm interested.
By which I mean I am interested ;D
And as for the best time, well, that's an erratic variable ;)
What version should I use? I've got a fresh install with no patches or expansion at the moment...
First of all, people really only play StarCraft: Brood War anymore. It's a standard. Do you have that expansion? Otherwise you could download it from iccup.com (the standalone version) or we can play the 'old' SC but that'd be pretty weird... :D
When you connect to the BattleNet it will update your version automatically!
Argh, what I really hate in RTS is micromanagement prevailed over macromanagement. I always wondered why must you control your units as if they were dumb robots or something, telling them every next move... in my opinion that defeats the sense of strategy and makes it rather action. This becomes really stupid in such games as Age of Empires, where not only your army is dumb as hell, but your workers need attention every half of the minute or so :-X and yet that game is considered to be one of the best RTS....
As for SC, I passed both campaigns (first + expansion), but, to my shame, I usually just lowered speed down :).
I am in as soon as ive finished the website of someone important! ^^
Ill also get my french friend to play too :).
Do you only play via iccup servers or?
Me and my friend have been using GameRanger.com.

Play Civ then ;D
I love Civ and you don't even have to tell your dumb soldiers that they should probably shoot back at the guy shooting them every two seconds :D
EDIT:
Alright, I'm expanded (yay battlechest) and patched (yay battle.net)
Which gateway should I use? (I'm connecting using my mobile phone as a modem, which hopefully won't cause any problems)
^^ does it even matter?
Sweet.
Ben, let's try Europe? Can't remember where you live right now. Shouldn't matter though. Then join a channel called "agsforums", I'll be there hopefully! :D Otherwise we can post back here.
Peder, iccup, normal bnet. Never heard of gameranger.com
Its just like a program to help you play games over the net :).
It makes a "virtual lan" as far as ive understood!
I havent had very good experience trying to play on the battle.net servers so..
Ah, okay, well we can try that out if it doesn't work in bnet (or iccup if somebody only has that version I guess).
Anyways, I just played 3 games against Ben304 and fun times were had by all I think. :D
Fun times were had by all except my troops, who lay now as smouldering piles of blue goo :D
I'd really like to do this regularly, I forgot how fun this is :D
BTW, for some additional motivation or entertainment, I can recommend these two English commentators on pro matches:
http://www.youtube.com/user/huskystarcraft
http://www.youtube.com/user/hdstarcraft
They have commented tons and tons of matches and it's really high quality commentating. Video qualities are usually ok yet not great. Some are done in HD though.
I can't imagine watching Starcraft matches being the same without commentators excitedly yelling "DARKU TEMPLAR!!!" and then lots of other words I can't understand ;)

...and korean girls screaming on background ;D
Total Annihilation beats StarCraft.
But i might have a game of starcraft some time.
We should have a super massive game of Civ 4 one day with voice chat... good times. :D
I haven't tried Total Annihilation.. But ive seen some videos, and many of the times I find the GFX hard to "understand".
Sometimes the "ground" is very noisy etc..
One more resource for the interested:
http://wiki.teamliquid.net
It's the best StarCraft wiki out there with tons of strategies, build orders and general information. Additionally, it embeds youtube videos of pro matches underneath each build order where that strat is used successfully so you can check it all out in detal.
Ben and Crimson, yeah, but these English commentators actually have the Korean and audience screaming in the background as well, just a little quieter. :D Plus, they give you A TON of information as to what's going on. I wouldn't have ANY game sense if I hadn't been watching 2-3 games per day these last months.
Very nice site. I can play with you if you want.
EDIT: Uname is ALPHATT
Okay, I would have some more time to play right now. Anybody up?
Oh, wow. My suspicions were right! My brother does own Starcraft and Brood War expansion.
I'll install it now. If no one starts playing with you dkh, perhaps I will.
EDIT: I'll just have to make sure the audio works once it's installed. For some reason the audio from the iccup version conked out on me and wouldn't work anymore (only Starcraft, nothing else on my system had issues). I told you, this computer is absolute crap. :P
Sweet, let me know once the installing is done. Then just connect to the battle net for the updates. Once that's done access the Gateway Europe (should work fine) and then hit "channel" and enter "agsforums". Either I'm in there or write me a PM and I'll come.
Well Ben, I hope you did better than I.
Dkh is a freakin machine with starcraft. Felt like he was building six times faster than I was. My priorities were all mixed up and poor. :( I have a lot to learn. lol

can you guys play on iccup? I don't own starcraft.

Sure ben. I was away from the computer for a bit, you still game?
Yeah, why not :D
Peder might join us as well (maybe)
Sure. I started up a channel in Europe gateway (where dkh started it last time). agsforums
Hooray! My first StarCraft match against two other people!
I had fun, Peder and Ryan (and I saved the replay too :D)
Just don't pay attention to me, you won't learn anything but bad habbits.. lol
I might get the free version and give it a go, though it was ages ago that I played an rts, and StarCraft especially :P
Sidenote: Messing around with bnet games motivated me to find my Diablo 2 cd keys. So, if anyone wants to play Diablo hit me up or something. :P
Well, I'm up for some more games in the next hours or so. If anybody is interested --> reply.
Loved to if I'd only get it to work :P
What's the problem?
Can't seem to create an account.
Finally got the beta compiled and sent to testers!
I have an early start in the morning and I haven't had much sleep.
Count me in (well, for one game anyway) :D
Sweet, Ben.
Mazoliin, are you following these directions? http://www.iccup.com/starcraft/sc_start.html
If so, what error message/problem specifically?
If not, follow these directions. :D
Ben304, in order to play with those players that only have the iccup version, you'll need it, too, BTW. You don't need to dl the standalone as the directions step 1 says, just the rest I believe.

That has to be done on their website ;). (damn you DKH!)
Anyways, Check your PM! Its much better that way ;).
Oh, and I strongly recommend using www.gameranger.com when playing!
Its only like 128kb to download, so even BEN could download and use it easy!
(Not sure how it works with the FREE version.. hence Mazoliin should check his PM!)
Ah, didn't known it had to be done at their site.
Thanks Peder.
Okay, well, I'd say we all meet up in the iccup (The Abyss) gateway, channel "ags"?
I thought maybe I could try ... just for fun, since I'm afraid I am not much of a competition here ;)
not sure when though; I'll check my possibilities.
Quoteyou can even download a version for free (legally) and play online
Uhhh... I don't have a copy of SC with me right now, so I'll have to download that free multiplayer-onlt version.
Only need to find where exactly.. nevermind ;)
Thanks for the game, dkh and Mazoliin, I had a blast (even though you both picked on me ;))
I feel I'm starting to get the hang of this game again, so I'll be looking for a rematch soon (not that I expect to win against dkh, but you know, lose less pathetically) :D
This was fun ;D
To bad I can't put up much of a fight... yet!
Okay, I could learn how to setup and join the channel.
Can I play with you people? ::)
I'll try not to loose too fast :P
Proper "competitive" online Starcraft is such a world away from how you'd play it usually that I hate playing online with people I don't know. But I may make an exception for AGS. Also note that I'm not brilliant at Starcraft, my desire to turtle is my undoing.
Well, I have time for another game or two. Anybody up?
I want to try! :D
Note: I can play only on "The Abyss".
Downloading the iccup version presently.
Okay, then lets all meet in the "ags" channel on iccup (the abyss).
I own two copies of SC and can find neither, it's depressing that I need to download a third copy.
Heh, just finished 1vs1 game vs dhk.
I played zergs, and lost, but it was fun. I still don't know how he managed to make THAT much marines so soon, heh. :)
Still downloading the game again since I couldn't find my disk, I'll be up for a game once I get that all sorted.
Also I agree entirely that AGS Civ4 needs to happen.
Well, I have a free boring evening today, so may be still available for several hours more.
I just got the taste of multiplayer SC ;D
Okay, I'm back, all installed, with a bottle of brandy and a crate of beer. I think I'm ready to rock.
Edit: And waiting in agsforums for someone to rock with.
I am here and available :)
Hey, Mr. Flibble, either you dissapeared somewhere or there's something wrong on my side. Anyway, I can't join the game with the name we were supposed to use. ;)

I know this might seem like I am spamming!
But you guys should really use Game Ranger to play instead of battle.net etc!
There is ALOT of "latency" problems using those servers..
While with Game Ranger I've allways been able to play!
If you guys download it and install it, let me know your nick and Ill add you!
Ill be up for playing next week :).
If anyone gets GameRanger (www.gameranger.com), feel free to add me as a friend. Ryanb84
I'm not up to playing StarCraft this weekend, but perhaps during the week.
I'd be open for a game or two now. Anybody else up?

I think maybe really try that GameRanger? maybe it won't have such problems.

NOTE: I possibly could play today, but a little bit later, maybe ~2 hrs or so. Not sure yet.
So.... I am theoretically available, although I am a bit tired ;)
Alright, meet in the "ags" channel on iccup?
Hey dkh, I met with ALPHA2T on gameranger
Do you like to join us? Or should we join you on iccup?
We should get this moved to popular threads :)
Anyway, if anyone wants a game or two in the next few hours, I'm here and sick of working on my game :D
iccup channel "ags"? I got time for at least one game, maybe two. :D
I'm already in there chatting to you :)
Oh, wow. You know what I just found out today? I kept seeing all these Starcraft 2 vids on YouTube in the past few weeks, and always assumed that sc2 had already been released. It's not!?
:-\ Now I feel like a fool.
EDIT: Compatibility Issue with Vista and 7Soon one of you will be running StarCraft on Vista or 7. I think it's mostly 7 though, and not so much with Vista. Anyway, there is a compatibility issue with the colors. Something to do with the taskbar running on top of everything. I've searched a few forums talking about this issue. Finally I found a way to disable your taskbar while running StarCraft!
So if you're having the color issue, use this to help fix the issue until a patch is released:
Open Notepad and type in the following:
Quote
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
C:\"Games\Starcraft"\"StarCraft.exe"
start explorer.exe
Save the file with a .bat extension.
I haven't the slightest clue why there are quotes around the game directory for the game, but it works so I haven't tried it without.
Some people were putting pause between running the game and starting up explorer again. So if some reason the taskbar is starting up on you before you're done playing StarCraft, perhaps this is where the Pause comes in handy.
Like this:
Quote
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
C:\"Games\Starcraft"\"StarCraft.exe"
pause
start explorer.exe
I'm happy that I can now play StarCraft on my new laptop. :P
Batch files make you 1337
Not knowing that SC2 hadn't been released yet makes you n00b
Way to achieve perfect balance, Ryan ;D

GameRanger runs kinda bad for me due to my horrible net, but if you're all up for a game at some point and don't mind me dragging you all down lag wise, I'll make some free time for a match or two :)
Alright my name on there is ALPHATT.
I'm up for a game or two in the next for hours.
Guess I am too late, huh?
Well, I usually have some time after 3 pm (15:00) GMT, or so.
Yeah, everyone's got free time at what is like 3:00am for me or something :P ;D
Anyway, I'm up for a match in the next while if someone wants a game now :)
Hey, Ben, we are with dkh on game ranger at the moment. Do you want to play on iccup? Are you at some certain channel now?
Oh crap, sorry dkh :P
I had to drive and get something and when I got back realized that I'd left it all running :-[.
*bump*
Don't tell me you guys gave up on this while I was finishing up Featherweight?
I play regularly on GameRanger now, it really is better than I thought at first. If that doesn't run well on your system, I'm still up for normal games on Iccup etc. I'm up for a game atm!
(Crimson and Alpha are on GRanger regularly as well. The other seem to have stopped playing again.)
(HAVE to check out FW by the way, looks very interesting.)
Yeah, Bnet seems to work better for me (despite latency issues).
Feel like an iccup game?
Sure, meet @ channel "ags".
Oh, hey... StarCraft. I haven't played that in years... may be fun to see just how far my skills have atrophied. (I'm not really sure what you guys mean by "iccup channel ags", though... :P).

iccup is a legal free multiplayer-only version from iccup.com.
Channel is a same thing as "chat-room" on the battle-net.
Basically they say that they are using gateway "iccup", and meet on channel "ags".
For more info read the first post(s).
I think I've got it mostly set up... but it refuses to let me log in or send an activation e-mail. :P
Refuses to send you an activation email? Or did not arrive yet? Because you need that. :D
The latter... it's taking its sweet time. :P
Actually iccup does not work for me to play with Ben :) Latency problems. So we are now on Game Ranger again.
Registered, waiting for activation e-mail to arrive... so not much different over here. :P
/EDIT: ...yeah, forget this. I'll play with you guys another time, when I get this set up. Sorry 'bout this.
Akatosh, I had issues receiving the activation email as well, turns out Hotmail seems to toss it in the junk folder.
Well, I received them now. If anybody's up for a few rounds of StarCraft tomorrow evening (by GMT standards) and/or during the weekend, I'd love to participate.
Sure! :D We're in the same timezone so it shouldn't be a problem I guess.
Better install Game Ranger software just in case ;) on iccup we had connection problems sometimes.
I'll be online (both for normal SC games and on gameranger) in about 30 mins or so.
Neat. I'll have enough time for a round.
Ok, I'm willing to play now. Did you set up Game Ranger or do you wanna try the normal ICCup version? Anybody else is invited as well of course! :D

Absolutely. :D My nick is 'dkh', add me as a friend... :p

Iccup.com allows to get a free multiplayer-only version of SC. Additionally it provides special "anti-cheat" launcher that opens an ability to play on iccup's battle.net gateway, called "Abyss", for free. I am not a specialist here, but I guess that if you want to play with others, who own only free iccup game, you must download that
launcher (not the entire free game) and configure it to run your full legal copy of SC. When you start MP game, just select "Abyss" gateway instead of Europe, US, or whatever are there.
Alternatively you can download GameRanger software. It just allows to meet friends and make matches more easier, in my opinion, it does not add anything to SC itself.
Exactly, go to iccup.com and look for directions on how to get started playing StarCraft online. You can download a tiny little tool that will enable your installed SC client to access their servers instead of the standard bnet (you can still go on bnet of course). Then we can play.
You can then also choose to download Game Ranger, another tiny little program, on top of that and that way we can play even more comfortably, but both ways work.
It seemed to be a bit of a hassle looking at the site, but I'll probably set it up at some point and join in. :)
It really isn't, we all did it! :D
Heh, good *bump*.
SC2 beta is released, and I am being watching SC2 replays on youtube. Yummy! Makes me want play SC1 again ;D
Usually I played Zerg, but now trying other races.
BTW, saw dkh is online, hi there , if you notice this :P
I was going to bump this as well ;D
I've also been watching videos, and hankering. Up for another game sometime?
Also, on SC2, how do you think it's shaping up? I was dubious about the Terran infantry units, until I found out that a group of Reapers can take down a building in about two hits, and Marauders cut through anything vaguely armoured like a hot knife through butter.
I'd love to play some more. In ~14 hours or something (it's 4.30 am right now) on Gameranger.

Hmm, yes, I've seen replays of a guy who likes to play Terrans. But he usually uses army of Thors. However, I've also seen how this guy was easily beaten by Protoss player using Colossuses with beam range upgrade :)
I don't have Iccup anymore either, clean Windows install since then, I'll look into Game Ranger.
Well, if you havent used that yet, it's really easy to install and setup. I think there were posts above that explained that. My nickname there is "Crimson Wizard" and dkh's is "dkh" (go figure ;D)
Game Ranger works strangely for me today, it disconnects every 5 minutes or so, and sometimes does not wish to reconnect for hour. Does anyone have same problem, or is it only me?
Yeah I can't connect at all atm.
Time to dig this one up again.
Anyone playing SC2 already? It is totally awesome and I would much love to play it with someone even remotely familiar instead of complete strangers, if the odd matchmaking and whatever mechanics in it at the moment permit.
Hey, yeah.
Just got my betakey two days ago. I would too love to actually get to use the friend list thingie as well as play some games. Currently in the silver league btw.
I'm "dkh.dereine", add moi.
dkh, you seem to finally get that beta key? :)
btw Peder Johnsenn said he's got one too.
Yep, I was lucky. Hopefully Peder can join us too, you still can't play online, Crimson, right?
Well, you well know I use that stolen beta with hack-launcher :) it is possible to play vs AI (a very dumb one), but I have serious doubts it will allow me to play online... guess I'll have to wait to buy final release.
or... I heard something about possible "open beta test". What does that mean? Will they allow to download beta for everyone?
Or, maybe the one already going IS open beta test? :P
No open beta I've heard of...
Anyway, I'm overly creatively Ishmael.ishmael over there, in case you feel like adding me.
Heh, well, I made myself a battle.net account (never had one before) and posted beta opt profile there. Let's see if Blizzard decide to make me a beta tester ;D
I was *just* thinking I had a strange urge to play Starcraft. I had the N64 version many eons ago, so I might just splash out on the real PC one for a slightly less pixelly experience.
I have an unusual question for those of AGS-ers who were lucky enough to get SC2 beta key.
I have someone's beta client downloaded from torrent. I can't play on battle.net, ofcourse, because I don't have beta key, and from some time I almost don't play versus AI (which was allowed by certain "hack"-launchers), because it's a bit boring (plus I don't have much free time to study new units/abilities properly, and they change in every patch).
Anyway, from patch 9 Starcraft 2 Beta has an editor. I tried it, and experienced very serious malfunctions there. I looked up on battle net forums, but found no signs of anyone having same bugs (well, there was one report which could be similar, but I am not sure). I tried to reinstall client, and all the patches again, I even got different client (different zone/language), but that did not help.
So now I am in a silly situation. At one hand I have a rare or unique bug that is not yet reported to Blizzard, and I have a troubling thought, what if it won't be fixed until final release (when I am going to buy the game). On another hand, I don't have beta key, so I can't even post on Blizzard's forums in SC2 section.
Question is, is there anyone with beta key who would be willing to send my bug report to bnet forums? I know that could be a bit silly, but well, I can't think of anything else. Maybe one can explain situation frankly (that I am using sc2 beta client illegally), or tell that you let me to try out SC2 Editor on my comp, or something like that.
Oh I forgot, I've also had a beta key for about a month or so now... I'll get round to downloading and playing soon. Is it any good?
edit: Just started downloading 1.64gb guh :(
But can you actually help me with the aforementioned problem, magintz? Or anyone else? please... :'(
Maybe I could do that myself, but, heh, just imagine that - hey dudes, I am using your soft a tiny bit illegally, and want to make a bug report - heheh. :P
I can post along your message for you to my contact on the inside :P
Anyone willing to play give me a shout -- Ishmael.vilehand 's the name nowdays.
I be hymnharmonia.hymnharmonia on der Starcraft 2 beta.
Hey guys... sorry for bugging, but I still wonder, can someone help me with the problem described above? magintz said he can post my bug report, but when I sent detailed info to him, I get no response, so I don't know if he actually did something :P
There are similar bugs mentioned on sc2 beta bnet forums, but they have differences, so this really bothers me. Do i need to update software, or hardware to be able to normally work with editor when final release is out? - that what's I wish to know.
Basically, my problem is following:
(put this in "spoiler" to allow people ignore this ;))
Spoiler
I can create new maps and open existing maps created by someone else without any trouble. However -
1) If I create a blank map and save it leaving default plain terrain as is, then close and reopen it, all terrain surface is completely invisible in the main view, it's like a black void. I can see all the units, but no terrain. I can see terrain on minimap though. I can select existing units, but can't add changes to the "map" - can't edit terrain, can't put new units on it (nothing happens when I click on the map in the main view with texture/unit selected from the left panel).
2) If I create a new map, do some changes to terrain, regardless how simple or complex: texturing, create cliffs, raise/lower terrain surface etc, - then save it, close and reopen, editor behaves like there's some data corruption or memory leak: it starts to "consume" more and more memory very rapidly until my system shows that 98-99% of RAM is in use, after that editor hangs completely.
This happens even if the map is very small (like 32x32) and only few changes were made to terrain.
Meanwhile, I can open any maps made by not me, regardless of how complex they are.
3) I can open maps made by other people, and edit anything, like units, triggers and data; I can then save and reopen changed maps normally. But as soon as I do ANY change to terrain, like paint a single block of texture, problem (2) occurs.
Actually I found that SC2 Editor works better on my father's comp, so that might not be a critical problem.... for now.
I have played with data editor a bit, and I must say, it is terribly powerful tool indeed. Once you learn basics, it becomes more and more easy to do stuff, and every time you learn something new.
Created first new unit in half of hour, second unit in one minute ;).
I am trying to make a tower-defence kind of mod now. Ofcourse there will be billions of these when SC2 is released, but it's nice way to learn modding.
Is there anyone out there who wants to play some good ol' fashioned StarCraft 1? I'm using GArena, but I will switch over to ICCup system if you guys want. Also, I'd like to start casting and uploading some replays as well :)
I have pretty limited time (and am focusing on SC2 now anyways) but we can certainly play a game or two. It would be great if you could go with Gameranger as that is the easiest place to meet and play with casual gamers, I can also play on ICCup as well tho.
Dunno how good you are but you should make sure to really, really know the game well before getting into casting! :D
I have just installed Game Ranger. My id is "ShiverMeSideways" if anyone wants to add me.
I've been playing online StarCraft 1 for a month now, but I've been watching a LOT of casts of both SC1 and SC2. I know both games and their strategies fairly well, and I can commentate on them, but I suck at actually applying them! :D
Hah. It looks like I won a Starcraft 2 beta key in a mapping contest on one sc2-dedicated forum. (I made an SC2 map in the editor) :D
Now... problem is the guy who is supposed to PM me a key is offline for about 14 hours.
Thats just cruel :'(
Good Lord, finally! I have beta key :)
Downloading client now.
Ok, if anyone is like to add me, I am crimson.ruspb
Is there still any interest in this?
For some reason I got a real urge to start playing this again.
Yup, I'm still on Gameranger pretty frequently, especially now the SCII beta is gone again.
Got gameranger myself, could PM you my id if you're interested in a game.
Sure, add me as "dkh" :D Then just message me on there and I'll add you back.
Too many dkh's :P
I'm LordHellabuse, maybe you got better luck in finding me.
[Edit]
Nevermind...
SC2 downloads a huge patch today, about 550 MB. Looks like second phase of Beta starts soon.
Too bad I have no time for a regular play now.
I'm in the US beta for SC2. I'm mostly playing terran. Anyone else playing?
I'd love to but the EU servers aren't up yet. I already played Crimson a bit in SC2 and it was fun. Also another dude I don't remember right now. :p
Yeah I still can't decide if I'm importing the NA version or buying the EU version. The cros region gaming is still in 'we're looking into it' stage and I have friends in both regions. My beta key is NA though.
Okay, looks like EU server finally working.
You can add me as Crimson #381 ( new naming convention ;) )
Just started playing SC2 on the EU. You can add me as Helme 589.
I'm NihiL (957) on EU. Always looking for people to play fun games with. Currently ranked Platinum.
EDIT: Also, added you, Helme.
Heh, it's been long time... anyway, I have just noticed last time I added my profile info for beta back in July. Now in SC2 I am Krimson 833 (yeah, Krimson with K, just for fun) on EU servers.
Don't have much time, but may play in late evenings (european time), also in beta I played protoss mostly, now I changed to zergs... not very good with them yet, so I haven't played ladder game for a while, was mostly practicing vs AI.
I'd be more than happy to play with you guys. Would this be through Battle.net (do legacy Battle.net apps even WORK?), or is there some specific server we can all play through?
You are talking about Starcraft 1 I assume? We all kinda went to gamerangers. It's a neat and tiny tool with which you can easily hook up and play games with good latency. There are instructions on how to sign-up there in this thread *somewhere* or just head over to gameranger.net. Do you have a working retail version (need to be updated, connect to bnet once to make it update).
Yeah, I meant StarCraft I. Also, any idea as to whether that gameranger stuff works in Wine? (Starcraft itself works great, fwiw)
Looks like it.

I'm on a Mac. Can I play against my PC friends?
Yes! Some games offer cross-platform play between Mac and PC and are listed here. The others are not compatible at all, usually due to technical reasons with the games themselves. This is not a limitation of GameRanger.
Alternatively, if you have an Intel Mac, you can install Windows on it using Boot Camp, and play your PC friends with all games that way. You will need to get PC versions of those games.
Hm, actually, it doesn't list Starcraft under the supported games. I also suppose you're on a Linux machine right?
Well, we can always go with standard BNET as well. Let me know if you wanna play, I do have some time now.
Hey, dkh, let's meet in sc2 sometime; I need someone to teach me play :P
Sure, I still have you added so we can talk when we see each other on Bnet 2.0, Crimson. I can't really say when I'll be on since I don't have the time to play "whenever" anymore. :D More like, 30 minutes time for a game or two spontaneously.
And DeadSuperHero, still up for a game of SC1? If you can run Starcraft and enter Battle.net we can play. It still works!
Oh, hello.
I've had very little time to play recently but I'm wanting to pick SC2 up again. In case interested, add me -- Ishmael #694
I might just add you guys, since no one I know plays SC2.
And if someone else wants to add me - Dwaa #467
Heh, dkh, check this out.
Me and Mazoliin have just punished some noobish cheesers ;D:

Well played. They got what they deserved! :D
