At least he died doing what he loved ...

I always knew this was coming.  I remember, years ago, saying this was going to happen but it's still shocking that it actually did happen.

I always admired the guy.

Rest In Peace, Steve.

Sam.

Bye bye thankyou I love you.

My mental image of Steve is of him sitting on top of a crocodile or wrestling a snake. He was a great spokesperson for the nature preservation movement, as long as it involved the opportunity of himself getting to wrestle or sit on top of a giant crocodile or snake. I've always seen him saying something "I'm standing just inches away from this worlds [insert number] th deadliest animal" or "this snake could kill me in an instant", and I guess if you choose that path of life, you simply gotta accept what the end of that path is like.
Being a follower of satistics, I can't believe that Steve just had bad luck in this last adventure. As someone else pointed out; these incidents are freakishly rare, and a person who's trained with animals should be able to take appropriate measures of precaution. Steve obviously wasn't being careful enough, he probably sought out the animal, to study it, see its reactions, out of curiousity; whatever it was I don't blame him, but I'm not gonna say he didn't get what he deserved.
With his wife and children taken into account, it's naturally also a tragedy.

EldKatt

That explains why I've seen his picture all day on the front page of Wikipedia. I should pay more attention to things.

I don't know a lot about what he's actually done, but I do recall his extraordinary enthusiasm for what he did, and I'm sure he succeeded very well in spreading that enthusiasm to many others. I for one will miss him.

Good night, sweet prince. You're wrestling angels now.

Indie Boy

Im deeply sad to see someone like this die. As you can't say alot of people follow thier dreams and love what they do for a living. Just he was surely an idol of someone out there (in the public eye or not) Just it must of been his time

Also, I dont see why famous people should get so much fuss in comparison to anyone else, sure he died and that really sucked, but if he was anyone else, you wouldnt care.

It probably has to do with the fact that he donated millions to saving animals and preserving wild life when many others wouldnt. It also probably has to do with the fact that he was a millionaire and he chose to choke crocodiles (and get them to the proper environment) to get them out of neighborhoods, rather than shoot them. And he chose to actually WORK and educate rather than roll over in his money for the rest of his life. If you ever get a million dollars and even give 1 dollar of it to charity, which I doubt, Ill make sure to give you the attention a famous person gets when he dies, jackass.

Do you think that you're honouring Steves' memory by this? Think again!
And btw grow up! This is the 3rd time you do that!

Nacho

Well, in the way I see it, Nikolas, this is a condolence thread to homage someone we liked, or even to vent our sorrow, or even putting a smile to the tragedy with Helm's photoshop... but what this is not is a place to say "He was a retarded and I hated his show, he probably earned this for stupid"

So, even I don't like a lot the style, I basically agree with the spirit of Shitar's post...

The sensible thing to say when someone you don't like dies is something good, even hypocrital, or, the better, saying nothing. But if you say something bad, it's normal that someone can feel insulted.

Anyway, it should be good to back topic.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

I woke up this morning and saw this on CNN. Crappy way to start the day.
This is someone I grew up watching. He taught about nature, and he was always in a great mood.
It's freakishly ironic that he died by stingray. For years we joked that one day a snake was going to eat him, or a crocodile was going to bite him. But death by stingray? Not only is that not funny, that's just painful. And darkly ironic, to boot. Fate is cruel.
Well, I'll be sure to pray for his family. They're probably going through a lot right now.
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

Tuomas

Have to say I had never heard of this guy before this.

But I guess I know how you all feel. I felt the same when they stopped making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. and I was a kid then. Blimey :'(

LGM

He was swimming in a pack of them, and he was being careful (as he always is.) The stingray was burried under the sand and Steve accidentally boxed him in, causing him to becom defensive and thrusting the barb upward. It pierced his heart, killing him instantly. Had it not done that, he may still be alive. But the barbs are poisonous, so I dunno for sure.

Sad to see him go. The guy cared about the world, and he did alot to make it a better place. He'll surely be missed.
You. Me. Denny's.

Pumaman

"Now, what we have here is a lovely example of one of the most dangerous of Australia's sea creatures, the Stingray. So, what I'm gonna do is sneak up on it and jab my finger up its ass, and see how it reacts ... Ooooh yeah, that really seems to have pissed it owff... Don't worry though folks, I've got an air ambulance just 50 clicks away should the worst happen..."

jetxl

How he got animals aggravated, it's no suprise.
He should've stuck with crockodile.

Dan_N

Probably the saddest thing about his death was that he was supposed to be a manly crocodile hunter, and was killed by Norbert Sting. Sad, really REALLY sad...

One might say that he stuck his hand in too many places really...

And so was stung to death...

monkey0506

'Tis sad that he's gone, though I must admit it's true that it wasn't particularly unthinkable with his line of work. I for one will miss him, even though I never actually met him, and wasn't, per se, a "fan", he did make me smile from time to time.

BTW, I can't see Helm's image. Does anyone have a mirror?

And, actually Dan, the worst part about it is that he wasn't even messing with the ray (at least from what CNN said), rather he just got too close.

Alynn

The thing is... it was a one in a million shot that he died from the ray sting, the only reason he died is because out of all the places to hit, it happened to hit him right in the heart.

But yeah... my kids and I used to watch him all the time on animal planet... It looks like the discovery channel headquarters is going to name their courtyard at their headquarters the Steve Irin memorial garden, and starting a fund of some sort in his name...
