Title: The Apple IIc, a Wonderment of Achievement
Post by: Pesty on Sun 05/09/2004 08:08:16
Okay, everyone, shut up and listen until I'm finished telling you about how awesome I am.

Today I went out to the ARC Thrift Store, with one thing in mind: I wanted to find an Apple II. Now, I'm a reasonable sort of gal. I didn't expect much. I totally did not expect to find one, especially since it was the first place I looked. But back to the electronics section I went anyway, my little heart filled with hope. Naturally, I made sure they didn't have any NES games I wanted, then made my way into the computers. And upon the shelf, I saw, gleaming like a golden god, an Apple IIc for $30. The tag was blue and today, blue tags were half off! It was destiny, I swear to God, Bitsy. It had no cables, but it had a green and black monitor, as well as the adapter for an RGB monitor. Of course I bought it, as well as a power cable for the monitor and a cable to connect the monitor to the computer. But that was all they had.

I have a feeling that you're all pondering why I brought this up. Aside from bragging, I'd like a bit of help. I still need a power cord for the system itself and I'm also looking for games. I've checked ebay, which didn't have the cord I need. So I'm asking you smarties, does anyone know where I could purchase the cord I need, or maybe even a battery supply, or maybe someone I could purchase them from? Same with the games. I don't have a 5.25 floppy drive on my normal (dead) computer, or I'd figure out a way to make them, so I'm willing to buy Apple II games. If anyone can help me out, I'd be much obliged!

I looked up pictures of the Apple II to find out what kind of power cord it used - and it's just a regular computer power cord just like every other I've seen. Do a google or go to any local store that carries computer stuff and they'll have them.

I remember that computer - I once played Oregon Trails during recess. I hated that I had to load multiple disks to play. Somewhere at my high school there's a room full of them. I should break in there and get them all.

The Apple IIc was made to be a portable computer, so it's power cord is a bit different than normal cords. It's a 7 prong little deal, like a PS/2 connector, and I've read that it has a sort of external power supply, like an ac adapter on it. I might be confused, but I know there are just serial ports and PS/2 like inputs on the back of it. I plan on looking at local computer stores (we don't have a lot here) and yard sales and such, but I'm not expecting much luck.

Remo: Agreed! The joy I felt upon seeing mine on the shelf was immeasurable. The monitor is adorable. It's smaller than my dog's head!

I wonder why there are so many prongs for a 12VDC power supply - it would seem like there would be a max of three unless it had two other voltage taps.

I could build a power supply - but the heaviness makes me think I wouldn't be able to do it for less than the $50 the merchants listed in that link charge because "heavy as a brick" means "huge ass transformer" and those are expensive.

Bah. Why do all my hobbies end up so expensive? Darn the luck! Darn darn!

Collect dust. That's a cheaper hobbie. I've got a huge collection already. I'm off to the Annual dust convention now.

Yeah, it's cheap until you get into the real high grade stuff. I still have a bag of dust from the tomb of Tutankhamun that I got for 200 bucks. The guy promised that it got the stuff himself and even though he looked a bit shady, and even though we were in a dark alley and I couldn't see very well, he had an honest face! How could I not go for it!
