This pisses me off

So i was conversing with a friend of a friend the other day, and the subject soon turned to music.

Them: What kind of music do you like?
Me: Um, Metallica, Megadeth, Slipknot, basically any kind of metal or rock.
Them: Oh, so you're like a goth.

Now this pisses me off to insane extent. If someone were to tell you that they enjoyed listening to RnB, you wouldn't instantly assume that they carry a large boombox, breakdance and wear parachute pants.
Needless to say, I abruptly told her that i was not, in fact, gothic, and that she was a stereotyping bitch.
Anyone got any comments?

I think you need to calm down abit. Calling her a stereotyping bitch is abit harsh and that's no way to get into her goodbooks! Perhaps you should instead kindly explain why you like the genre of music and why it is not linked to people of the gothic movement. Or you could just talk about Films, because films are good and you are not.

And BOYD, i know for a fact she WASN'T joking.
And btw, i did explain to her that rock music and gothic/emo lifestyles are different, but it annoys me all the same.

You forgot the part where after the altercation you went home to cut yourself to ease the pain.

I've never actually had anyone consider me goth because I listen to much of the same thing you do. Then again I don't constantly wear black, dye my hair, wear 3000 chains all over my clothes, and eyeliner. To me this is more the goth lifestyle than the music you listen to.

She was a bit stereotypical then.

I dare call someone goth when they've painted their face white and eyelines black or something, in addition to black clothes, black hair and a ton of chains hainging on the belt. Because that's what, to my understanding, a goth person actually is... I only have the black clothes and chains parts :P

Does she know what a goth is?  Does she know what any fashion movement is?  If she's around the same age as you, I doubt she understands it very well.  Instead of insulting her, you should have simply said:

"No, I'm not, because..".

Also, 'Blake.  There's a difference between being Gothic and being a Goth.  Before getting on your high horse, you should research the various styles.

That way, you'll look intelligent.  Instead of looking like a mean-spirited, self-obsessed dick.

Like they said, there's two kinds of goth.

Someone who dresses like a "goth". (Although this in itself is a rather contradictive statement, as a goth in the seventies/eighties was someone who refused to dress up like the majority, however the goth look is now commonplace thus losing it's meaning of independence.)

Someone who listens to gothic music. This isn't the bands you mentioned. Gothic music is things like The sisters of mercy, Paradise Lost, Mortiis, HIM, Cradle of filth and Nightwish. I listen to some of these artists but that doesn't make me a goth, and besides, I listen to Keane too. (For example)

Them: So what kind of music do you like?
Me: Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Christian Death.
Them: Oh right, thank god you're not some Megadeth loving goth type. I hate those goth peoples.
Me: I concur.

MarkPhantom

I love Nightwish, and I am rarely called a goth. I am referred to as rather sadistic and disturbing though.

what are you talking about? A goth in the seventies? Gothic music is a variation of post-punk and dark-wave, which occur in and around 1980, starting with Bauhaus,Joy Division and The Sisters of Mercy. Being a goth is quite more specific than just being counter-majority in terms of fashion. The death rockers have their silly style, the german romanticists have their silly style, the ebm people their own, and so on.

Yep, Bauhaus did first release a single in 1979, as did the Cure, and anyway are you telling me the whole early nineties grebo band thing started exactly in 1990?

Sheesh.. the only reason i said seventies was 'cos I knew I'd get some smartarse telling me it's not JUST the eighties, but it seems I can't win can I!

Thing is, you can't judge people. Everybody's different.
I've met preps that are the sweetest people. I've also met goths that are the nicest people on the face of the earth.
That said, there's a lot of mean people around too, but if you're nice to them, chances are they won't judge you.

RnB = Rhythm & Blues

A lot of times this term is used to describe a more contemporary form of music, much to my disgust. I've heard the term applied to what sounded like Hiphop/Rap. :P

Nacho

The Beatles consideres theirselves as a group of Rythm & Blues, actually...
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Renal Shutdown

I consider Rhythm and Blues to be R&B.
I consider the newer, soft hip-hop type of thing to be R'n'B.

I also consider R'n'B to be sh*t, but that's besides the point.
"Don't get defensive, since you have nothing with which to defend yourself." - DaveGilbert

Las Naranjas

R&B is a messy term, mainly due to the fact it's a quick paste over the older, and unacceptable term "race music". So I just don't use the term.

I think that anybody who dresses up in a certain way to belong has too less personality to develop their own style.
It's sad that e.g. if you like to go to raves, you have to look like a partly skinned bulimic pink teddy bear who had an accident with a nailgun, otherwise you're frowned upon by your own crowd.
Of course liking to go to raves is sad all by itself ;)

I don't want to belong, I just want to wear what feels good on me. And I end up looking half-goth...

And Nightwish ain't goth music. It's labeled symphonic metal in some places. If not that, I'd call it powermetal, altho a slower sort of such... but I'm no genre-scientist.

It's strange. Wearing all black doesn't make you a goth at all. There's a long way from generic black-wearing longhair to

and that way is paved in feathery silk and face powder.
