By Size i mean in Megabytes..........
Is say 4Mb...or...6mb
or whatever........whats you opinion....
Is 10 mb okay?...........
I don`t mind cause i`ve got broadband......so for me if the games large....no worries.
What i `m getting at is a better quality soundtrack...and loads of fancy graphics all talking up loads of space.....
Worth the large file size.?
I think it's definatky worth it.
10mb isn't too much. I don't really care about download time, I mostly care about the size it takes up, but to have the extras it is worth it to me.
I can just delete it from my system afterwards.
But I'm going to download your game even if it was 30mb. It looks awesome!
Cheers RF...
Thats one person....
I hope the game is less than 10mb.....and started this thread to get peoples views....
I will do as much space saving as possible.....At moment the music takes up 1.6mb....and we want to do loads of fancy stuff.......minus is the high File size...
You could always offer a second download for the bulky stuff.
Like speech packs and such.
I've downloaded things about 1.5 gig so you have nothing to worry about ;)
As big as it gets. If it is worth it, that is.
I have no problems with the size, as a game using all the power of AGS, how big can be? 200 megas with speech and some videos? No problem, since I have ADSL... But I can undesrtand that some others don't, si it's them who have to say its opinion...
Maybe it's a good time to the "wise men" to say some tricks to avoid increasing the size of a game? maybe don't animate the backgrounds, just some objects, is a better choice most of the times.
Unless the animated objects are extremely big and would slow down the whole game.
In am trying too keep file sizes down......but we`re using big backgrounds ...digital music....but think it enhances the game...
I don`t invisage....anything like 200mb...
As i`ve got WEBSITE bandwidth to consider.........i only get 2gb a month.
When you release it, rar it (using something like WinRAR), instead of zipping it. That will reduce the filesize by about 10% quite often.
Also, consider offering digital music and speech as an optional add-on...
DON'T EVER DO THAT WHAT AGA SAID!!!
If you do that, I can't download it, because my WinRAR program is crazy:
I won't extract anything!!!
I don't care about time, I have downloaded one game about 2 days!
Well I'm a dialupper, and I'll happily download anything up to about 20 meg, after that I tend to think twice. Anyone who can't survive without their internet for one hour while something downloads needs to reevaluate how they're spending their time :P
If it's crap.. 1 MB... If it's semi-crap, 5 MB. If it's okay, 7 MB, If it's awesome crap-your-pants-tacular 1403540934MB
Well, for most people who have dial-up, we just use programs like GetRight or DA... so its not a problem of the filesize, it's just the download time and if it is a game we want to play. If I saw a game that was 10Mb, and it doesn't look like something I'd wanna play, then I wouldn't download it.
One word. Farcry. :)
you mean the game you went out and paid for to support the makers, of which one i know? :p
Evil.. Is it me, or are your posts becoming more and more illogical and stupid?
:-p
I'm really glad to hear that download sizes aren't an issue with most. I've always worried about creating a game that's like 20 meg and then having nobody download it!
Well, I have dial-up. And as long as I'm living at home with my parents, I'll never have DSL or cable because at our location, it's not available.
I've had problems downloading large files before... right when I'm about halfway through a 23 MB (about 4-5 hours)download, the phone rings, and I get disconnected. When I re-connect, I have to start all over. (Download Accelerator, and similar tools seem to mess with my computer too much, so I can't use those)
I suppose any size is fine, as long as you split it up. If it's, say, 16 MB in size... split it up into four 4 MB files. That way I don't have to sit and wait for 3 hours, worrying if the phone is going to ring or not while it downloads.
That's my two cents. ;)
I have DSL, so i will pretty much download any size file. But sometimes downloading huge files still take a while to download.
The largest file i've downloaded with DSL was a little over 100 MB.

We you gotta keep in mind that we arnt gonna download a game like "\/\}1qu1D g4m3 f0r JOO!". We're looking at presentation, images, features, and reviews. Just because the creator says its a good game, doesnt mean its true. Extensive screenshots, plot explanation, and things like that are key to getting people to download a game, even if it is only 1mb. Could be 20 though too.
Huh???????? How did you come up with that Evil???? I don't think I understand.
yes but i think the broadband : dial up is 65% : ummm...46% ?
And I'm on 64k ISDN , but if its worth i'd DL 10 mb.
Dont forget that i went on downloading 100 Golden oldies just because they tricked me in WinMX, or something...
Even though I'm on dialup, I don't mind how big the game is, as long as its decent quality. Like I'm not going to download a game thats like over 30mb if I'm not really gonna play it... which reminds me, I havnt started playing FOTAQ talkie yet...
I've downloaded a 200mb game on dialup. It toof me about a week on and off, but I still got it cos I thought it was worth it. So yeah, I don't mind, as long as its quality not quantity... or yeah...

I realize that size isnt an issue. Its more or less how it is presented. If it looks like an awsome game, you'd download it be it 1mb or 20. If it looks like crap and/or you dont know anything about it, you arnt going to wait through a 20mb download.
I've got dialup. It takes forever to download even a 2meg game. IT sucks. With the game you're making Foz, it's an awesome game already, but the 10meg thing would keep me away, sadly. If I had my old connection (when I never got disconnected) I'd definately leave it downloading all night. But now, no way in hell. I'm suprised I'm right now.
Anyway, here's my suggestion to help please everyone.
Make 2 versions. Have one with all the new cool stuff you want to add that'll take up a shit-load of space, and have the other one with MIDIs and of course a seperate download for speech for each.
That's the way I would do it. And also, you could zip it with both winzip and RAR to satisfy a lot of people.
