Problem with mic

Hmm, I dunno what the problem is in your case, but up until recently I couldn't get my mic to work after 2 reinstalls of windows. I turns out the problem was very silly actually. In my windows (xp, maybe this applies to other too), the computer thinks the ports in the sound card are all for loudspeakers, because it think there are 6 of them. try opening the C-media mixer or whatever, and check in the options wether it's set to recognise 6 loudpeakers or 2.
The C-media mixer is always in the taskbar, near the clock, on startup. Otherwise, I think it's in the C:\WINDOWS folder. :)

Yes, Ginny, that's a damn fine point. Now I remember having same problem once too. C-Media or Xear3D mixers lets you choose between 2,4 and 6 channels. setting them to 2 channels solved mic problem, assigning one port to microphone! Microphone +20db boost can also be selected there.

I had tried the windoows sound recorder before and it did not work, So I looked for one on the internet. It is called i-sound. It is a trial, so it cannot record past 1 min. 40 sec.
Acually I didbefore but then I had to ctrl alt delete to stop the program cause it would not exit.

There are others at the site, but I have not tried them.

Ok, there may be one more thing.. I used to close the mixer too, but maybe that's not a good idea, so don't close it, and make sure than when you see the "Vol" tab and the "Rec" tab on the mixer, the microphone icon is blue. It's a bit hard to explain in words, but that may be it. :)
If not, maybe there's a more complicated problem.

I didn't mean to be mean to you.. I just figured that was kindof stupid if you knowingly had 2 PCI Soundcards in your computer. But seeing as it's a on-board, I take back what I said.

And to Leks, I know some musicians have 2 soundcards or more, because they need them. But somehow I don't think OSC is a die-hard DJ Musicican thingamabobber.

Did you try the BIOS yet?

to enter the BIOS, restart your computer, and on the screen it might say something like press a certain key to enter the BIOS. I can't remember what keys are used to enter mine, but you can enter the BIOS right after the computer is starting.Ã,  On some computers, you might have to hold down delete or something like that.

sorry i can't be much of a help.Ã,  :(

edit: this may only work on first startup, because i just restarted my computer and couldn't do it.

The BIOS is basically a tiny OS built onto your motherboard chip that is used to modify Motherboards settings for various support reasons.

To access it, you usually press down and hold F8 or F2 or Delete at startup. If you know anything about GUI's in DOS, then you should be fine. Most BIOS's are straightforward.

well the bios thing wasnt for me, so i disabled the sound card through the control panal. Every time on startup it says new hardware detected and half of my sounds werent working. So i did the hardware thing, and windows searched for the best driver. And look whats happened no sound! No midi sound and wmp has no sound and with games like foa, the speach doesnt work.

err help  :-\

Or, you could format and reinstall windows.. But if it's so cheap to get an update and you feel it's time, then good for you! I love getting new computer updates, even when it's not really significant :).

The bios is a tricky thing to work with really.. you can screw stuff up if you go in there clicking on just anything. Usually though there will be a menu item that brings you to a list of stuff you can enable/disable and the onboard sound card should be in there. There may be two menu items like that actually, depending on the BIOS.
