You guys are way over by head...

I'm about a week out from finishing the game I started. My family and friends have played it for just over a week.Ã,  It is a short game. I simply wanted to try AGS to see if it would work for the application I wanted it to work... It will.

Thanks to all of you that were so supportive of this new guy that wanted to make this work

Ashen... many...many thanks for all your support.

The game... my game ADWM will be up and running by next weekend.Ã,  It's a little mushy since I made it for my son and his new bride, Ruth. Still, it's an adventure...

I am a new guy and the whole AGS thing seems exciting... provocative... especially in the uses that I see.

Most people here, when I asked for help were snotty and demeaning... Cool.Ã,  I guess that's the way it is when a new guy comes into play... sort of like a freshman in high school... Still... I can't learn if you won't teach.Ã,  Ashen taught!

Again, thanks to Ashen for taking a little extra time to teach.

AGS is important I think in that it teaches cognitive thought in a multidimensional way.Ã,  How does one get from A to B... in a 'created' world?Ã,  There are many ways to get there... but which is the right way... which is the way that 'everyone' will understand.

Chris Jones... You're the bong.Ã,  Thanks for allowing us to play in your incredible world.

My game is a short adventure... maybe a couple hours depending on if you get the whole hieroglyph thing... Hugs to all.Ã,  Steve

Hi teatrx, welcome fellow adventure-game-fan and aspiring adventure-game-maker.Ã,  It's always a bit tuff at the beginning when learning a new program such as AGS and becoming familiar with an online community such as this.

I've been into computers and the internet for a long time, and in my experience, this community is about some of the nicest and helpful bunch of people you're gonna find on the internet.Ã,  But, the thing is, you need to learn to take your time to become familiar with AGS and, importantly, the forum-rules here, then you will find you'll get much more favorable, friendly and helpful replies...

Of course, the nature of the internet being the way it is, with millions of "anonymous" people from all different parts of the world, regardless of where you go, you're bound to run into a few rude people. Don't dwell on that, just smile and keep learning. And, try to take critisisim, good and bad, as a positive to learn and grow from.

I think I didn't really reply to any of your previous posts before as either someone else beat me to it with pertinent information, or it may have been something I didn't have a proper reply for, or perhaps I was being too busy at the time to give a proper reply, and/or a lot of time your posts were breaking some forum rules, and I didn't want to come off acting as a moderator (I try to leave that up to the forum moderators here).

Once you are around for a while, follow forum rules (people like that here), become familiar with AGS (read the manuals, help files, tutorials, use "search" feature on the board instead of re-asking same questions that's been asked before, release a game or two to share with the AGS community, etc..), overall things will get easier and more fun here for you.Ã,  ;D

Don't give up, and don't get frustrated. We all were a "newbie" at some point. Keep at it, stick around, and I'm sure in time you'll fit in here no problems.

Best regards, and feel welcome to share your adventure gaming creations with us.Ã,  :)

Squinky

If anyone was rude to you, it was because you stumbled in here with a rude attitude yourself. You posted silly crap in the wrong forums and then verbally attacked anyone who pointed it out to you. Even the name of this post seems to have that same snobby attitude.

Nikolas

I think that I agree with Squinky.

And btw, there are a lot of people that are self taught. It can happen to everyone.

I will point out once more that this is a wonderfull community (blah blah, CJ, love blah blah)...

Of course there are rude people and rude posts. But an idea is to check all your previouis posts (which are not that many) and see what you've posted and where. That may give you an idea about the image you gave to us about your self...

I'm very happy that you've almost completed your game. I envy your son! Honestly! And I plan on doing the same for my own son and I understand your feelings completly! Congratulations on that!

And lastly on a more happy note please do hide that avatar of yours. It is very creepy...[/joke]

Er, what's a "head" in metric format?  I know hands converted from imperial measurements, but this one is as confusing as a hundredweight,

Barbie's right.  AGS is a very helpful community.  The only downside, with being so friendly and helpful all the time, it's not long before some breaks their usual cool and criticises someone for making a post that is in the wrong place, come many times before or is quite frankly daft.

I've been AWOL for a while, and only really caught the whole Business Game malarky, so I'm not going to go on about any past issues.  I will say that most of the people in this forum are some of the most tolerant people on the internet, and if you're on the receiving end of their mocking stick, chances are you're the straw that broke the camel's back and then kicked it's shins whilst it was down.

Honestly, the main people here deserve a medal for how nice they are to people, despite how dumb some of those people have been in the past.  I've seen communities that start riots over things over the most mundane and innocent of comments.  I just hope you, and every other newbie (who won't bother to read this) in the future will take this in to consideration after clicking "reply".

Also, I'm not surprised Ashen helped you out.  He's a sweetie, even if he did plagurise my footwear.

You mean you want to marry him off? A tempting offer, but I think I'll pass for now.

Squinky

I just realized that this post is titled "by head" (oddly). I thought it was originally "You guys are way over your head", which is why I made that comment about it being snobby. Woops...

Sam.

it would have made more sense your way squink, this way, im just confused.

Its a shame IM not the bong, maybe Id understand then. Ill ask CJ how he got this status.

When i see him, in my dreams....
Bye bye thankyou I love you.

Ashen

Do we really want to know what goes on between you and Chris in your dreams?

'bong' (here at least) I take as 'bomb', as in 'CJ's da bomb'.
Also, until Squinky's post I was reading 'over by head' as 'over my head' - which admittedly doesn't make total sense in context, but scans better than 'your head'.

theatrx:
You're totally welcome, I'm glad I could help. I'll have to check out the finished game when it's out.
Although I can't see why now, when you first posted I found you a bit ... rude - which inclined me not to help out. I think it was just an abruptness, perhaps a slightly demanding tone, and that you posted in GiP when you didn't actually have a game in production ;). It was possibly just not knowing your 'style', as it doesn't seem to be there now that I know you're not in fact a pushy little SOB. However, if other people saw it, that might be why you thought you were being treated rudely: they were just replying in kind.
Like Iqu said, repeatedly breaking forum rules and/or being rude and/or just plain stupid (and more importantly refusing to do anything about it) is about the best way to get most folks round here to be less than their usual charming selves. (Not aimed at theatrx - or anyone in particular - just an observation.)
In general though I have to go with the flow here, this is one of the more tolerant and civil communities I've seen.

Aw, shucks.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Welcome to the AGS Community!

Just some simple advice:

1) Do not mention anything concerning religion! (People here tend to jump all over anyone that expresses their beliefs.)
2) Do not mention anything concerning nudity, immodesty, impurity, indecency, etc. (religion usually comes up.)
3) Do not mention anything concerning morality. (religion usually comes up, also.)
4) If you are to make an opinionated statement, be prepared to defend yourself!
5) Try to stay away from threads you disagree with... If you don't have anything nice to say... don't say it!
6) Don't stereotype. Some people here tend to do this... just stay clear of it.
7) Use tact and be courteous. Mind your manners and be civil. Contribute reviews, previews, games, demos, advice, etc. and you will be honored.

8) Above all, respect everyone here and they will respect you. 8)

Why not? What's so terrible about religion?
Actually, I HAVE worked on a couple of finished games. They just weren't made in AGS.

m0ds

You'd be surprised! Us bunch of computer guys have a hard time talking about religion in a controlled & sensible manner without someone getting angry - so no wonder the world is full of wars.

MrColossal

I like how that simple little question could be an opening of floodgates into another huge arguement amongst people on what is wrong with religion. Then someone will liken someone to a nazi and it's almost a perfect thread! Hoorah Internets!

If I express my religion, I believ I will be called a blasphemer.... by several people.... and, oh, and another peice of advice, DON'T mention your political stance!  (Especially if you're a democrat or republican)  Just... don't do it okay?  If I express my personnal political stance, I don't think too many people would get mad, but some would... maybe... now I'm curious.... I'm a Communist!
