Altering a game

I'm currently playing the Quest for Glory 1 VGA version patched(1.1) and I came at a place where there is a bug and I can't move foward in the game, so I was wondering if i could somehow decompile the game and alter my save-file so I would end up in the next room.
(My problem is in the room with Yorrick in the Bandit forteress before seing the bandit leader. When you pull the chain it is suppose to open a door, but it just open and close really quicly so I can't go in it... it's really technical, nothing about puzzle solving I'm rather sure! I was told to increase the game speed or slow it, but it doesn't help)
So could I alter the game with AGS and somehow skip this irritant bug?

Thanks all for the info

No, not even Chris can decompile games now, because someone went ahead and creating a copy of his decompiler, so now games can not be taken apart, thats why he insits that everyone back up their copies.

Now, onto your question, have you contacted the group responsible or asked a question in the Hints and Tips forum.  You could ask others to create the save file for you.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

As I understand it, you are talking about the original Sierra version of QFG1VGA, right? The game is made in Sierra's SCIV interpreter, which has no technical relation whatsoever to AGS (although they can produce similar looking games).

This sounds like a timing issue due to the speed of modern equipment, so I recommend that you try a CPU slowdown program like CPUKiller

Check these products:

You might also want to read the guide to running old games on new equipment (XP in particular) at Home of the Underdogs: http://www.the-underdogs.org/guidewin.php and http://www.the-underdogs.org/guidedos.php#f

Edit: This specific speed issue in QFG1 is discussed at http://www.sierraplanet.com/~ugarte/Resources/Technical.htm#SpeedQfG1

Timosity

Yes I had the same problem with the same part, it worked with moslo, or turbo on my pentium2, but on my AMD athon 1500+ I couldn't even slow it down enough, it is a timer issue, which just goes to show how little developers thought about the future when developing games.

Who could have predicted it anyway, but it's funny that lucasarts games have never had the same problem. maybe they knew more back then.

My advice is to play it on an older computer if possible (with something like turbo) or just pretend you finished it seeing as it is about 5 mins from the end.

One thing you might try is to run two slow-down programs "on top of eachother" (I did it once with CPUKiller and Moslo). It'll probably get VERY choppy, but as it's just to get past one spot, it could be worth trying.
