If you're right at the start of the game

After going down the stairs you can exit the screen to the left to find the front door instead of the back door.

Edit: I think I'm stuck on the same bit as you now.

Can't find a key for the back door, can't seem to get anywhere... I feel I am missing a room or something in the house, where is mum's room? It seems oddly missing.
