uncertainty machine help; bug in day1

I'm pretty much at the end of day 1; all I have left to do is crack-call the police inspector to get him out of his office so I can search it.  I've tried numerous times via clicking on the vacation poster in his office, leaving his office, then trying to call him on the cell phone, but the game won't let me.  Instead I get the message:

"I have to call this while I am at the police station."  Followed immediately by; "I think I know how to get inspector out of his office."  (Suggesting the character knows what to do but that the game itself doesn't consider the character's location to be a valid place to make the crank call from.)

I've done nothing but enter the inspector's office, click the vacation poster, exit his office, and try to make the call for the better part of an hour now.  I've tried to make the crank call from all sorts of positions within the "police-station-lobby" type screen. 

And yes, I saw the thread saying someone else had this problem.  They say they managed to get through it after several attempts, but that post is from back in 2004 so maybe its a different version of the game or I've got a single-bit-error in one of the game files or who knows what.  Mine says version 2.54.495. 

Is there anyone who can email me a save-game beginning at day 2?  I'm starting to think this is the only way I'm going to get around this bug.
