Title: December MAGS
Post by: magintz on Mon 01/12/2003 16:52:50
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

Why should I enter MAGS?
BECAUSE I SAID SO... k!

joking

I'm not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the net month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The theme is going to be Christmas but this time it will be with famous characters.

An example: Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne get's invated to Dr. Fred's house for a Christmas party but someone have stolen the presents and it's up to Bernard and pals to find the presents and find the guilty one.

The rules:

1: There must be a Christmas story which is based on existing characters from movies, cartoons or games (not real persons if they don't feature in those things mentioned like). Adventure games characters from Lucas Arts and Sierra games are okay.

2: The main-character must have a santa hat on his head. It's up to you if you want the other characters to have a santa hats but you don't have to if you want.

3: There must be at least five playable rooms and at least one must include snow (a snow-veiw out of a window is okay but paintings don't count). The snow-plug in is welcome but it's not "stricktly".

The rest is up to the contestants...

If you got any games that you want to use the characters from you can either start from scratch or go to http://www.juncmodule.com/juncSource.html to rip off characters, backgrounds, objects etc...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have fun guys... all games in by 28th!

How about characters from books?
Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: Mats Berglinn on Mon 01/12/2003 17:13:19
That does count, Gilbert.

I was only thinking if they're not harder to do compaired to movies, cartoons, games etc, or are they?

Post by: PureGhostGR on Mon 01/12/2003 17:23:20
Does the character have to wear the red hat at all times? Or can it be something like a special section of the game?

Edit: And also.. must all the characters be existing (famous) ones? Or just the main one?
Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: Nixxon on Mon 01/12/2003 17:27:02
any graphical restrictions?
does "every" character have to be famous?
Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: Mats Berglinn on Mon 01/12/2003 17:34:11
GhostGR: The main-character must wear it all the time. About the existing characters, not everyone but most of them, it's okay to make up characters but at least three must be extisted like I said. Also, the main-character must be an existing character like Bernard, Guybrush, Elwood Blues, Goofy etc.

Nixxon: Graphic is up to you but it would be recommended that if you for example use Day of the Tentacle characters, use cartoon style graphics. When I mean famous I mean that most people have heard or seen about. It doesn't mean it have to be popular like Pokémon or Star Wars but something we agsers know about like Sam & Max, Monkey Island or anykind of we know. Even the less known characters are welcome here. No, not everyone have to be famous. Just some, at least more than one.
Title: Re:December MAGS

no worries :)
Put bluntly, could the main char indeed be santa?
Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: Mats Berglinn on Mon 01/12/2003 18:35:11
No, not the main character, there already been games with Santa as the main character, so sorry but no. Although, you can use Santa as the other characters, that is 100 % okay.

Three famous people?  Rats.  There goes my idea.  Can't there be only one?

Remixor: Ok, forget about what I said about Santa...

cpage: If you mean A Monkey Island Christmas Carrol that I wrote a year ago, sure. It's allowed.

Ben: You can take characters from movies, games, cartoons, books and comics of every kind.

HEY! People from the Bible can also be used, because the bible is a book! :) So you could just make the birth of christ game,  with a santaclaus hat ;)

Good point Minimi. If you're in for this competition, then good luck! ;D

It would be a funny thought, Joseph wearing a santa-hat when Santa didn't even exist then (hehehe  ;D). I would like to see that.

Hmm at first I didn't have any idea for this months, but my longing to enter this month overcame that and made me develop an idea :)
so I'm starting on the GUI now and hopefully if I work fast enough plus we have hannucah, I'll make it :P

Good luck everyone who enters...

PS: I'm having trouble thinking of a famous character to use....

edit: Ok, got the famous chars, now to work! :P

question,
Is it cool if the main char is a normal person? and is it cool if that person has no santa hat, provided the guest star is wearing a santa hat? thanks!

Count me in. I will finish this time, I will not back out.

I have a question though. Can the snow be falling outside the window or does there have to be a seperate room?

Ps: I call dibs on Ronald McDonald and friends... Are they famous enough?

I'll *TRY* to enter this month... But I'm not doing a single sprite or line of code for my MAGS game until I finish the demo for The Tablet of Altheria, which I hope to release Christmas Eve.
Title: Re:December MAGS

As for using pre-made sprites, bg's etc.
Would a contestant be more likely to win if he/she made their own graphics? Just seems a bit unfair since most of the effort is indeed making the backgrounds and animations.

Evil: Cool idea! Those sprites looks sweet. The sno falling about of a window? Sure, it's allowed but can the snow-rain-plugin do that?

QuoteMaybe someone can do a The Nightmare Before Christmas one.

Yeah, no one have ever done a game from that movie. I would like to see The Grinch as an AGS game.

Oh, and a special note: About the santa-hat rule: If you're basing your game after a christmas movie, you don't have to use santa-hat for the main-character all the time (if you look at The Nightmare Before Christmas or the Grinch, the main character only wear those in special scenes), but if you bases on non-christmas movies, games, comics etc., the character must wear the Santa hat all the time. It's just to make it logic in terms of the original christmas movies.

Nixxion: Who is that character? I don't recognize him/her. About the graphic thing: It's up to you which kind of graphic you use, its up to the voters for who is going to win.

Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: Joelman on Wed 03/12/2003 19:16:47
ok, heres my deal, i'm an elf, santa is in a caffiene induced coma, and I have to save christmas. his hat doesnt fit me, because he has a large head, and my hair gel would make the inside of the hat sticky...
is this legit?
btw, i'm partly basing it on the grinch, in that you CAN steal christmas and be evil rather than save christmas... is that close enough?
Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: Mats Berglinn on Wed 03/12/2003 19:34:21
No, that won't count. Like I said before...
1: If you NOT basing your MAGS game of movies like the Grinch or The Nightmare before Christmas, the main-character must wear a santa-hat ALL the time. Hair-gell is no excuse for it.
2: Santa's lil' helper is too close to Santa so no, you can't use him for this. I'm sorry but it has to be a variation.
Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: PureGhostGR on Wed 03/12/2003 21:50:23
I'll pass this time :( :( :(

I've actually come up with a solid idea for a game.. but my main problem is the santa hat.. I can't fit it in without the game loosing its moody atmosphere.. not constantly wearing it at least.. (there would be an after-costume part)..

Oh,well..

Good luck to everyone else. :)

:)

Ok here is the idea for my game :

It's christmas 1890 and the main character, is celebrating together with some friends of him, christmas at home. He is working on a project of a machine to zap through time, and he's testing it. While he still wears is santaclaushat, he steps into his machine, and travels through time, into just a few hours before the time 0. Now he wants to find out the story of christmas, and have a view on the little baby Jesus.

Sources :

Movie : The Timemachine (from 1978)
Book : Matthew from the Bible

Post by: Ginny on Thu 04/12/2003 14:47:32
Hmm, now chances are that I'm wrong, but isn't AD After Death, that is 0 is when Jesus died? not born? well, I'm not a christian so more likely I'm wrong :P

GhostGR: screw the rules! :P j/k but maybe you could make this game seperately?

Now, as for me, the game will take place on a distant planet controlled by... badgers... and koalas are also an important entitety(sp?) there. The player arrives there and crashes his spacecraft, and is stuck. And it's christmas. that's about all I can tell you without revealing too much.
I've finished the GUI:)
Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: Mats Berglinn on Thu 04/12/2003 15:01:24
Minimi: Very original if I say so myself.

GinnyW: A combo of spin-off of Planet of Apes and Christmas? Well, seems okay as long as three character are from Planet of Apes or other stuff (Who or from what does not matter, it's up to you).

I don't know what AD stood for, but I'm sure it's not After Death because Jesus lived until he was 30 or so. What I heard is that Jesus weren't actually born year 0 but year 1. I know it sounds unlogic and strange but that's what I've heard.
It seems pretty exciting so far.

Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: Minimi on Thu 04/12/2003 15:10:20
Anno Domini, is counted from the moment Jesus was born. But yesm I heard some people also say, that there might be something between, like 1 or 3 years difference. Well... back in that time, they didn't have telephone, and travelling and spreading news, took some more time. But who cares about those few years?
Title: Re:December MAGS
Post by: SSH on Thu 04/12/2003 15:20:10
This is numeral pedantry, but it's all to do with cardinal and ordinal numbers. Anno Domini (AD) means " The year of the Lord", so the day Jesus was born, notionally, was the first day of the first year of the Lord. Hence 1 AD. There was no 0 AD because there is no such word as "zeroth" or "nothingth": these are ordinal numbers. However, BC dates are cardinal numbers, that is the number of years "Before Christ", hence there was a 0 BC.

Since the first year of the first millenium was 1 AD, hence the first year of the second millenium was 1001 AD and the first year of the third millenium was 2001 AD.

Just to confuse things, the latest estimates as to when Jesus was born indicate that it was the year known as 5 BC, as other records indicate that there was a census in Palestine in that year.

Myself, I follow the Chinese system...

Oh god no, you misunderstood me, asmuch as Plent of the apes is a nice movie, it has no connection whatsoever to my game, I just need it to be on a different planet, the main character is a famous char but is a secret, and also I will have several AG characters (nothing from movies). heh. Serious work starting tommorow. :)

edit: Gee I hope LEC won't sue me, all 3 characters turned put to be from LEC games. I'm not gonna rip them though, they'd make the art look even worse heh. I hope it's ok for the NPCs to not be extremely important to the story. There will be interaction and dialogs of course, they're just not really in the story as main roles... Hmm, then again maybe they are lol.

Heh, Elvis Presley in a Santa hat! I bet you're gonna use the song Blue Christmas for that game. He looks too simple but that's just an opinion.

Since Elvis did feature in movies when he was alive, the real person rule is an exception for this but remember to not use other real persons that are not featured in movies.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I realise that Elvis doesn't really lend himself to video games very well.

In fact, there are very few characters that DO. I can't think of a single character worth taking the time and effort to animate to make a game... sad, isn't it?

That's just plain dumb. No offence really, fellow-agsers, but I'm sick of people writing my name wrong.

Hey , I think im gonna try make amags game as my first ags game just for some practice.

Im thinking something along the lines of , Haddon Sandblum , the guy who created the first santa image is kidnapped by an evil villian (ill find a villian from one of an existing adventure game)  because they dont want there to be christmas spirit but indiana jones is sent on a mission to find him in time for him to create santa for chirstmas.

I know the sotryline is a bit corny and i need to move my butt cause i only got 11 days but does this seem fine to you? also what are the rules of reusing backgrounds from older adventure games & obvioussly reusing characters because it is needed for this months competition , is this possible or are there any rules against it?

Regards
Asaf

Good luck asafii, sounds like a nice game, I never heard of Haddon Sandblum :)

I should get a move on too. I gotta get a sprite from MI and retrace it, and do more art and scripting (no music done yet either). But it's alright, I'll make it. ;)

Yes Haddon was the guy who drew the first images of Santa he was hired by Coca Cola because originally Santa Claus is a coca cola figure i think it was in 1923

Strange... no games have come up yet. I wonder if this will be like repeating last month? Now hurry up people but don't panic. Panic is the path to the dark side. Panic leads to stress, stress leads to frustration, frustration... leads to suffering. Sorry, I couldn't resist saying that. Anyway, it's just one more week to go (7 days to be more exactly). If you feel stressed because time starts running out just chill out on Christmas-eve or Christmas-day (depending on when yo get the presents, for myself it's at Christmas-eve  ;D).

Yeah, I'm hoping after Christmas I'll have some time but as of now I have none.

Yep, most likely mine will come in on the last day. One thing though: you seem to indicate that the last day is saturday, 27th, and not the 25th (thursday), which is when the competition usually ends (the later the better of course, heh). Anyway, my computer (well WinXP more like) has gone AWOL, so that may pose a problem for me, but I'm reinstalling photoshop and that should take care of any trouble, as AGS is installed on Win98 too. :)

Well Minimi, at normal circumstances I wouldn't accept Puddy Penguin because he is only known to some agsers but not so well-known in Sweden, England, USA, Denmark etc. and therefore he isn't what we call "famous" in the terms of the rules... But because it is so little time left I make this an exeption.

I see forward to your post GinnyW.  ;) I hope you others can make it in time.

It's just a few hours left before it's over. I don't know if the deadline will be at 18:00 (I don't know at which timeline but it would be London time) but you guys gotta hurry if there is going to be any voting. I know that it has been hard times because of Christmas and other things but I know that you guys can do it!

It would be sad if there are no games up before the competition is over. If the case will be like that then I will make the new rules and I make them much more simple than this month rules so more guys can be for the competition.

Good luck to you all and let's all hold our thumbs for that at least one or two games will make it in time.

hey, I hope to finish my game in about 3 hours... im working hard on it now. But hey, it's just midday here in The Netherlands. It could be that I come a little short in time, because I have a dinner with my colleagues in 5 hours... and the evening after it, I would had been going to finish the game.... but right now im going back to AGS, to try finishing the game!

I swear to finish my game. Ussually it's until 18:00 GMT? I can definetly make it :)
I'll just have lunch (I'm home from school) and then it's right to AGS to finish it  :)

P.S. Unless something horrible happens of course. ;)

And if you can just wait a few more hours for me? In 45 minutes I have that lunch... wich will probably take something like 3-4 hours maybee longer... and after that, I finish my game!

Progress on game right now :

All graphics are done (backgrounds, animation, characters)
All puzzles are done
just need to work out the dialogs and make an intro screen and some credits.

According to Greenwich Mean Time the 28th will end in about 2 hours and 30 minutes. How about starting the vote after that final interval? Should be enough time for Minimi to complete his entry.
Of course all the others that announced an entry can still submit their games as well...

Edit: Hm... now it's 1:30h after 29th started and still there's no additional entry :-\ Seems to be a really long lunch, Minimi. I'll check again in some hours in hope that all entries will be here then...

Sorry Klaus, and all other, but I became sick, during the lunch :'( I had to throw up for about 20 times, and I feel right now very weak. I guess GinnyW is the winner?? I will still try to finish my game "Puddy Penguin : TuXmas". but it won't join the MAGS.

*heads back to bed* :'(

Hope you feel better Minimi, sorry you're ill and couldn't finish. :-\
So noone else's making a game? Anyone?

Hey Minimi. Like GinnyW I'm also sorry that you're ill. Lunchtime is always dangerous  :-\ I hope you'll feel better again very soon...
As the 28th is definitely over now all around the world and noone held up his hand for a time expansion or something similar I think we should end the final MAGS competition of 2003. The winner seems to be clear and can already think about the new rules but as usual the last word is on Magintz... :)

I'm sorry for that you became sick Minimi and I'm sorry that only one game made it.  :(

Ok, I've done some thinking of the rules, when i finish them, should I wait for magintz to post? if not, who do I send/PM them to?

I hoped there'd be more entries, but in any case I'll try my best to come up with comfortable rules, not too free, not too restrained.

When I was the winner last month he sended a PM to me about the rules. You are just PM him the rules. I'm a bit excited about what the rules will be but I'll not be in the next month competition because it takes so much time and I need to get on working on Hawaiian Treasure Prologue/Demo. Anyway, I congratulate and salut you, GinnyW! And pretty good game too.

Heh, thanks :) Though I've a feeling Minimi's game would've won had he entered. No matter though, was still fun. I think the rules are pretty good, hopefully I'm right ;). It's pretty non-restricting. I have almost finsihed the rules, I'll wait until magintz PMs me then.
