Title: December MAGS
Post by: Klaus on Thu 01/12/2005 12:04:19
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website (http://www.mags-competition.tk)

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here we go with the new guidelines set by BaRoN...

Topic: Elves

DESCRIPTION:
Elves are "little creatures of folklore with magic power, often mischievous or malicious, but sometimes kind and helpful." - Websters Dictionary.

This theme is open to broad interpretation: it can easily be related to (certain seasonal festivities) or not as you see fit.

REQUIREMENTS:
1) a bouncing ball
2) a pinching crab
Both of these must be included in the game, but how you do so is up to you (i.e. backgrounds, objects, inventory, NPCs, etc...)

3) Included prominently in the plot there must be some detail of the social structure of elvish society. Elves being a fictional - or at least a very elusive - race, this requirement can be exercised as creatively as you wish.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by December 24th, so we can get them as xmas gift. :)

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

PARANOIA: If it isn't mentioned explicitly in the rules, then there's no restriction.  So yes, you can make the game any resolution/pallette depth you want!

A question, if I may - the rules do indeed state that you "must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you", but I was wondering if that meant that team efforts are out? I seem to remember one entry at least that was made by a team, though I can't be completely sure.

There has been several team efforts made for MAGS before, Coup de Cup and Spellbound come to my mind at the moment. Personally, I don't see why team efforts would not be allowed, after all, it's all about making games.

Elves, he said! :3!!1
That sounds like fun. I'll also try to make something small:

A question about the music: Does it have to be original or can I use midis from other games, as well?

EDIT: Thanks for the quick answer, Pablo! :)

That's what I always did, so no it doesn't have to be original.

I was working on my MAGS game, but halted it since i still don't have a hosting space.  :'(

So I'm continuing with my AGS game Kludden instead.

Here is a screen of what the MAGS game looked like so far. It was a mario clone (platformer). I'll host it next year.

Sure. The mentioned screenshot is later put on the MAGS site as a preview of the game. But as long as nothing is finished and the game development is still in progress all graphics are welcome.

Oh, I'm sorry but January 3rd really is much too late - the next competition should already start on January 1st. Is it possible to help you in some other way to see your game being published earlier?

Ouch, many thanks for this information! I added a short script there months ago in March but noone seemed to have problems so far - at least noone reported :( After a short look on it I saw the code actually was buggy, but now it should run fine for everyone. Sorry for the incommodities and thanks again.

Except for sound and music, I have completed my game. It makes very little sense, and the puzzles (the very few of them) have proven problematic for my testers. Otherwise, I think it's pretty good. I'll post it sometime tomorrow, whether I add sound and music or not.

Bernie, that looks great!

Okay, I'm not entirely happy with how the game turned out, but I guess it's not really all that bad.

I apologize for all the noise filters. It's ugly, and I'm not sure why I did it. :P

Here's my game:
Cedric and the Revolution (http://www.origamihero.com/files/advgame.zip)

It's not very polished and lacks some dialogue and sound effects because I ran out of time. Oh well, have fun playing!Ã,  :=

Bernie,
A lovely well crafted game so far, but get a crash when I talk to Louise at castle. No frame 20 in loop 0?

Just wanted to say that I've played them all (Not finished but played) and they're all really great games. Well done to all of you for entering.
;D

Oh yeah and Bernie, I'm stuckz0rrzed!
When you have to get Louise's hat:
Spoiler

I've put the net up over the hole and got Viktor to stand in front of the passage, but the hat just floats up when I throw the ball at it and I don't see how I can block the top...
And I can't figure out how to light the coffee machine candle either.

Bartimeaeus:

Spoiler
Hint 1: If you could make the net sticky somehow, you'll get closer to your goal. Hint 2: Something in Victor's house will help.
[close]

Wretched: Thanks! I'll try to fix that.
Title: Re: December MAGS

With regards to Hint 2:
Spoiler

I have noticed Viktor's fire but... what to light!  :D

EDIT: *Bart grins naughtily* Hehe sorry for hijacking the thread  ::)
Title: Re: December MAGS
Post by: Bernie on Sat 24/12/2005 12:56:07
Spoiler
It's not the fire, it's an item you can find in his house. Btw, PM me or post in http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=24149.0 if you have more questions. It's probably not so good if we keep doing this in the MAGS thread. ;)
[close]

Wretched: I couldn't get the game to crash... however, I had no frame in loop 0 of view 20, maybe that was the problem.

For voting please visit the MAGS site (http://www.mags-competition.tk) or make your choice right here:

So we had a really long time for counting all your votes now and compared to other competitions a lot of you made a choice... Actually it's a very clear result in the end:

The winning story features an elve. Oh that's not much of a hint as it was this month's topic. Now what else can we say!? The winner is not Apprentice, it is

Cedric and the Revolution by Bernie

Congratulations to Bernie and also many thanks to Arcangel and Erenan for their nice games.
