Title: Rise from the Abyss!
Post by: Barbarian on Mon 26/12/2005 16:11:37
*UPDATE: Jan.21.2007 - Current overall game progress is approximately around 72% completed.

Due to popular demand, I've been now working the last few months on my new adventure game, "The Elevator - Rise from the Abyss!".Ã,  Some of you may remember my original "Elevator" game, which I made for the first "One Room, One Week" competition a while back: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=20505.0
Ã,  The main character in that adventure found himself stuck in an Elevator, and needed to find a way to escape.

My new "Elevator - Rise from the Abyss!" game will be based on the idea / concept of the original game, but it will be expanded into a full sized adventure game, with lots of areas to explore, a few interesting characters to interact with (sometimes perhaps being able to control / play-as a different character within the game), nasty monsters will be encountered (did I hear a Zombie behind you?). I'm planning on implementing "fight-scenes" at key points in the game, however, some fights may be won in different ways (Example: Use your Wits, or a helpful Weapon might come in handy as well). A much more intersting story will unfold as our adventurer explores and interacts with his surroundings.
==========

Ã,  Ã, A brief summery of the story I will share with you thus far:

Jack is an average guy who's a bit down on his luck.Ã,  Having a tuff time finding a new job, and with the bills piling up, he thinks his luck's about to change when an ad in a local newspaper catches his eye:

"Wanted: Testers for a R&D firm. Good pay! No experience required as on-the-job training will be provided. Interested individuals please come to our office located at 2 Gardenview Lane in PleasantVille on Wednsday between the hours of 6 - 8 pm".Ã,

Hmmm, PleasantVille... Jack's never been there, and it's a bit out of town.Ã,  But curiousity gets the best of him so he decides to check it out. Finally arriving in the quiet little town of PleasantVille, it almost seems abandonded.Ã,  Finally, Jack locates the address of the office, though he's a little bit late by this time.Ã,  But, trying his luck, he knocks. No answer.Ã,  Trying the door, it's unlocked, so he decides to go in... "Hello! Is anyone here?"

No answer... it seems no one's here. Damn! But, now the real adventure is about to start. Jack find he's "stuck" in the office, so, he goes into a back room to try and find a way out. He will find that in fact the office was not "abandonded" as he thought, and into a fearsome terror of a waking nightmare he will fall, and soon he will find that his "new job" is to Survive, to stay alive as long as he can as he finds "The Elevator", which brings him to face horrors, devious puzzles and madness at each new level.Ã,  Ã,

Some sick feindish mastermind seems to be playing some kind of warped "game" with Jack, watching, waiting, enjoying Jack's desperate prediciment and his impending doom.Ã,  Jack may need to make some desperate choices if he wishes to stay alive.Ã,  Some choices may plunge Jack into a world of darkness and despair which will challenge his very morality, his very soul!
===========================================================

Ã,  Ã, The "Elevator" will be a re-occuring "portal" of sorts which will take Jack to different areas to explore.Ã,  If Jack is to survive and escape this nightmare, he will need to find the next "Elevator" in each area which can help take him to his freedom and salvation.
I was hoping to make a "Survival Horror" type of aventure, similar in idea to the "Resident Evil" / "Silent Hill" type of games.Ã,  I'm taking my time to do a good job on this game, and as my life is rather busy at times, so there's no set release date yet. I'll just say that I'll work on this game as much as I'm able to in my spare time and hope to release it within 2006 sometime.

Below is a few ScreenShots of my game. The quality of the ScreentShots here reduced from what will be seen in-game, as I converted them over to "jpg" format and resized them a bit smaller to display better on this page:

Jack finds a "Withered Corpse", is this some previous "victim" perhaps?

The Elevator! It will be like "Friend and Foe" at times during Jack's adventure.

Exploring an alleyway in what appears to be a "Ghost Town". What horrors will Jack find here?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've got a good start on making this game, but I've still got a long way to go yet.Ã,  The game will have lots of nice graphics (as you can probably tell by the screenshots), and I'll be adding in some nice extra features (eg: shadows for the characters. cool "animations" at key sequences. "cut scenes" of almost "movie-like" effect.).Ã,  Ã,

I was thinking to wait a bit longer before making a game-in-production thread for this game.. but I figured, I've already put in several months of work on it, and got a good start. Plus, I think I could use the inspiration from some of you fellow adventurers here to help motivate me on.Ã,  ;DÃ,  Ã,

As I make some significant progress, I'll keep you all updated here from time to time.
Best regards.

uh... though i'm pretty sure you ripped all of these graphics, the elevator in the second screen looks like you (or they I guess) Completely skipped doing it in perspective. If you could fix the elevator, that would be great, great work so far man.
Title: Re: The Elevator - Redux! (8% Completed)
Post by: Barbarian on Mon 26/12/2005 18:01:18
Yes, ( and before more people mention about the graphics being ripped) I'm "borrowing" the graphics from various other sources  ;)  Same way as I did for my original "Elevator" game, but people seemed forgiving of that fact and overall enjoyed the game and wanted to see more.

It's actualy a lot of work to get and edit the right "screen grabs" and graphics I need/want to use for use in this game and to put it all together in the right way.  The "Elevator" perspective is a "bit off" on purpose, and I sort of put-together the Elevator myself by splicing/editing together many screen-grabs of that scene. I was trying to go for a "overhead at an angle looking down" type of perspective there... almost as if the "Elevator" itself was looking at the character.

Inside "The Elevator", it's a bit of a "warped" placed, "half in reality, half in the paranormal" type of idea, and I was trying to get this type of "warped look / feel" for when the character is inside the actual Elevator.  If you play my original "Elevator" game, I think you'll better understand the type of setting, look and feel I was going for inside the Elevator.

Also, "borrowing" the graphics for this game as I'm doing will allow me to better create the type of look / feel that I had in mind, also make it seem a bit more "realistic" when playing, and also as I'm not a good computer artist, this is a much better and faster way for me to produce the type of work I want for my game.  I know some people hate or are against "borrowing" graphics from other gaming sources, and I can understand that... but still I think many players will be forgiving of that if I can provide them with a good gaming experience (and for free too  ;D ).

For future projects of mine, I do plan on using all original art, but for this particilar game-in-production I think I will be able to produce a great game with fantastic visuals going the way I decided in regards to the graphics.
   Thanks for understanding.  :)

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone.
It's good to know there's some interest in my project and that people are looking forwards to playing it when it's ready.Ã,  Ã, If you liked my original "Elevator" game, then you're sure to love this "Elevator - Redux!" version. I promise everything will be MUCH better (Story, Graphics, Animations, Puzzles, Playability, etc...)

I'm still working hard on the game in my spare time, making steady progress... It's starting to take good shape overall now.

In the meantime, I thought I'd give you all some more "eye candy" of the main character "walking downwards" sprite animation.Ã,  The little "gif editor" I used to put this together did something wonky to the colors and seemed to have lowered the resolution... the actual sprite in-game will look much better in color, sharpness and resolution, but at least this gives you a bit of an idea of the work I'm putting into piecing together smooth looking character animations.

Wow, this looks great. How long does it take to rip all those sprites?

I also love the twisted perspective in the elevator.

Is "Elevator - Redux" the actual name your going to use or is it just a working title?  Just wondering if it is or if you might use a whole new name.
Title: Re: The Elevator - Redux! (8% Completed)

H.B.:  Yeah, it does take a lot of time to grab and edit the graphics that I'm using in the game.  I think its an "art-form" in itself doing it this way.  ;)

JR:  I was still planning on calling it "The Elevator", but I may change the "Redux" tag name into something different before release.  I'll see what more suitable name I can think of during development.

Still makin' progress on my game. More updates coming soon.

Hi guys. Just to let you know that I've still been working on my game, though progress is going a bit slower than I hoped. Life's been a bit busy lately, so not as much time to dedicate to my project.

Still, I've worked out the story details a bit more, been working on some new locations / rooms in my game to explore, preparing more backgrounds, working more on some of the character sprites (main characters as well as some NPC characters), getting some early scripting-work done some possible "fight-scene" sequences, got the "Save / Load with Screenshots GUI" implemented, tested and working good now.  Also, I think I may have thought up a better "Tag Name" for the game instead of "Redux!", but, I will wait a bit more before I decide firmly on that.

Perhaps soon I'll have some more goodies to show here, but in the meantime you can know that I'm still gradually making some progress on my game.

Good stuff so far. I'll check out the original game pretty soon.

I appreciate how time consumeing the sprite 'ripping' process is and you show some real dedication to your work to produce such art via such a slow painstaking process.

Looking forward to this, good luck with it :)  :D

Hi everyone.
Ã,  Ã, Well, I've been working hard on my project in my spare time the last couple of weeks and I've made a lot of progress.Ã,
Ã,  Ã,  I've almost completed work on the first main "level" that will be explored in the game.Ã,  I've also made significant progress on adding more puzzles, rooms, graphics and sounds.Ã,  Also, I've added in another important character, "Jane", who becomes Jack's new best friend after he rescues her from a terrible situation.
Ã,  Ã, Overall, I'd say the game's progress is around 35% completed now.

Ã,  Ã, Okay, as a special treat to all your eager Adventure Gaming fans out there who might be looking forwards to playing my game, I provide another screenie of one of the rooms to be explored (please note, the image below has been "cropped" from the full size, and imaged quality is reduced as the picture was saved in "jpg" format to help reduce file size and image loading time for this page):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jack, along with his new friend Jane, enters a disgustingly dirty and foul smelling washroom. Ugh! What surprises might they find in here besides the dirty toilets?

You know what Don?

This 35% made my day! Right now! It is morning 7:00 and you made my day!

Thank you and I'm waiting eagerly for this game!

Note that, for some reason, the last image with Jane takes a lot of time and in the end it does not load. It might be my problem but still, thought I'd let you know...

Nikolas:Ã,  Good to know that I "made your day"Ã,  ;)
It's nice to know I have some moral support out there regarding this project and that some of you are looking forwards to playing it.

I think I have the image problem fixed, check it out now and enjoy! Let the anticipation build. Heheh.
Before I uploaded that image, I thought I'd take a chance and try to use the AGS File Uploads area http://www.americangirlscouts.org/agsuploads/index.phpÃ,  , but for some reason it seems that site is not connecting too well at the moment.Ã,  So I've now uploaded that image to one of my own sites.

Yeah, I've made a lot of progress on the game lately. I guess I felt a bit extra inspired to work on it, plus as the last week or so is the "Chinese New Year" holidays here in Hong-Kong where I'm now residing at, my regular "day-job" was a bit slow, so I had a bit of extra spare time recently.

I'm now working on scripting some possible "fight scenes" into my game and thinking how might be the best way to approach that.
Actually, I was playing around with the idea to perhaps make certain fight-scenes in a "First-Person-Shooter" style... but that's still a "maybe".Ã,  Though I'm still scripting to have some fight-scenes in the 3rd-person action perspective.

I'm doing my best to have the graphics fairly "consistant" in my game, even though I'm mainly "borrowing" (ripping) the graphics from various other games I have, though I still need to spend a lot of time and effort on the various graphics to edit them to make it useable and look good and to fit in with the overall look, feel and style of my game.Ã,  I've also been carefully selecting just the right sound-effects and "ambient" noises and/or music that will be heard in the background.

Okay, I'll keep working at this project, and bring you guys more progress reports soon.Ã,  Who knows, if I can keep this pace up for a while, the game might actually be ready sooner than expected.Ã,  ;D

*Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention:Ã,  I've found a neat way to make my game playable with a joystick-controller / gamepad as well.Ã,  So, the game could be played with either mouse or by joystick / gamepad. If you just have a basic joystick-controller / Gamepad, you can still fully emulate the mouse movement and functions. If you have a joystick-controller / gampad similar in style to the "PlayStation" type of controllers that has both the directional thumb-pad along with the thumb-joystick, you can use the directional-thumb-pad to control the walking movement of the main character, and with the thumb-joystick you could move the pointer and the joystick-controller's / gamepad's "Button 1" emulates a "Left-Mouse Click", and "Button 2" emulates a "Right Mouse Click", in this method the whole game could easily be playable using just a joystick / gamepad controller . So far it all works pretty good. More about that later.

I don't think he wants to be putting his hand in the urinal.

Looks excellent though. I dont really care that the graphics are ripped. They are appropriate, and much effort went into getting them.

The game looks very proimising, I can't wait to play it.

even though the graphics are ripped this still appeals to me... however, i dont think that alyx out of half-life 2 really fits in, maybe if you could do some editing in photoshop somehow.

Post by: Barbarian on Sat 04/02/2006 20:37:06
Zooty: Heheh, you're probably right that ya don't want to be really putting your hand in the dirty urnial.
And perhaps I should have saved this following tidbit of info as a "surprise", but I think I'll tell you guys about it now: actually, something a bit "unique" in my game is that in fact you can use the urinal and toilet!Ã,  In my adventure game I'm trying to allow the character(s) the freedom to do some things that "normally" you might not see in most adventure games when a character is in a certain situation or location (in this case, being in the washroom, normally most games don't allow the charactr to actually "use" the toilet, so I thought "Heck, why not!" ;)Ã,

Hammerrite: I thought the "Jack" and "Jane" characters in action within my game, appeared to fit the setting quite nicely and seem to be fairly consistant with the backgrounds and various other graphics.Ã,  When you say you don't think the new character doesn't really fit, do you just mean because it's a recognizable character from another game? Or do you mean you think the graphic style doesn't really fit well?Ã,  It took me a lot of time and effort to gather those sprites and to re-edit them to try and fit to look fairly decent for use within my game.

Adventure Gaming Fans who are currently following my project and awaiting it's release:Ã,  What do some of you other people think? Should I keep the current "Jane" sprites for that character, even though it's "ripped" from a well-known character from the HL2 game? - of course as you all probably know by now, I've been "ripping" most all the sprites and graphics for this game.Ã,
Or do you think I should try and find a whole new set of sprites for the Jane character and drop the current "HL2 Alyx" sprites which I was using for the time being?Ã,  Of course I'm trying to keep the various graphics looking nice and trying to be "consistant".Ã,  If enough people think I should really change the current "Jane" sprites to something different, then perhaps I shall go ahead and change it.Ã,  However keep in mind that may add an extra month or more of time of my working on my game before it could be released, wheras if I keep the current "Jane" sprites, I could save a lot of time and release my game sooner.

Here's a couple more pics of "Jack & Jane" together using the current sprites. See what you think:

To me, it don't matter where you got the sprites.Ã,  If you can take them and use them to create your own game, your own unique adventure, then the fact that they came from somewhere else won't even be an issue, in my opinion.Ã,  And it looks like that is exactly what your doing here.Ã,  You are obviously putting a lot of work into this project and everyone should respect you for that.Ã,  So don't worry about the sprites, because the amazing game you are creating far surpasses the fact that these are ripped sprites.Ã,  Ã, ;)

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate it and I seriously consider all feedback (positive or negative. I try to have an open-mind and learn from all critisism and try to keep improving myself).Ã,  And thanks for talking some good sense into me JRockÃ,  ;)Ã,  Ã,

Yes, after reading your comments, and after thinking about my overall project and all the hard work and time I've thus far put into it, I think I'll just keep the sprites as it currently is.Ã,  Heck, it's my project afterall, so really it's up to me anyways.Ã,  Ã, However, I do greatly respect the opinions of my fellow AGSers here, and I wanted to make my project as good as I possibly can make it with the current way I'm getting the materials for my game.Ã,

For future projects I do plan on having all original art... but as this "Elevator - Redux!" project is a "contination" of my first "Elevator" game (and the graphics for that game was "ripped"), and even though that was a short project made within just 1 week's time, overall the response from people who played that game was quite positive, and I had lots comments and emails from many people basically saying to the effect "Wow, I loved your Elevator game! Please continue it and make a new game.".Ã,

Ã,  Ã,  So, I will do my best to keep the game looking "consistant", even though sometimes I will be gathering materials for my game from different sources.Ã,  But Jrock is right, it's about creating an "amazing game" for people to enjoy, regardless that most of the graphics are "borrowed"Ã,  :)

Ã,  I promise that when this overall project is completed it, that most of you here who decide to play my game won't be dissapointed.Ã,  I'm improving my "game making skillz" all the time, and I feel this will be my best project yet!

... Okay, gonna get back to working on my game now.Ã,  "Hey, wait a minute, what's that strange noise? Oh my Gawd, is that a Zombie behind you... Aahhhh!"Ã,  ;D

This is looking superb.Ã,  I loved the original Elevator game, and I was thrilled to see you'd started working on a sequel/extension.Ã,  Looks like you've got the original creepy atmosphere captured in this version.Ã,  I have to say, while I was playing the first one, every noise or change in the little message screen made me think "Aaagh, what was that?"Ã,  Heh, for those who haven't played it, I dare you to try it alone at night. :P

Mordalles: Thanks for the comments. Nice to know I have some "fans" out there looking forwards to playing my game. Am I getting paid for this? ummm, well I was thinking of charging $50 USD per copy. *Zing* Heheh, just joking. Of course my game will be totally free.  :=

Sean: Thanks for the offer of support. You do an awesome job of making such wonderful 3D-ish looking type of backgrounds that may fit in nicely with a game like this. Anyways, I'll think about what I might need and I may be in touch with you soon.

Ivy: Awww *Blush*  ;) Thank-yea! Well, if you liked my first "Elevator" game, you're sure to love this remake. It will be MUCH better in every way, and a LOT more "creepier" too.  BTW: From what you've shown us of your "Spooks" game so far, it looks very good.

Hey guys, just to let you know that I'm still making steady progress on my game, even though this last few days I been a little busy with work.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In the "Boiler Room". There's things happening here that you can't "see" in a still shot. For example, Animations such as: The fan on the wall spins around, and a mist of steam-vapour escapes sometimes from some of the pipes. All the while accompanying background sounds and noises are heard. Also there are "Lighting" and "Shadow" effects that can't really be appreciated from just a still screenshot.Ã,  Sound of footsteps change when the character is walking on the concrete floor or the metal steps. Adding in all these little "touches" is also something that will help make the various scenes and rooms come "alive", and also is why it's a fair amount of work involved and not just simply "ripping" graphics.

Gord: Yes, you're right on that, I was thinking the same thing. I just didn't have the time yet to properly adjust the various lighting / tone / hue type of effects for some of the areas in my game... but don't worry, the end result, everything will match more naturally and look more better. Ã, ;)
Ã,  Some of the "Screenies" I share with you guys are before I've had a chance to properly "tweak and polish" those parts yet.

Hey everyone.

Just a quick update regarding my project;

I'm still making some progress, though the last couple of weeks I haven't worked much on it as my father just passed-away recentlyÃ,  :'( , so lately I wasn't in such a "game making mood".Ã,  But still, it's good to keep the mind occupied, so now I'm trying to get a back into working on this project some during my spare time.

Currently, I'd say overall progress is approximately 46% completed (this is if I stick with just the 3 Main "Acts" I orignally had planned for the game), with the "First Main Act" of the game just about completed. I was planning on "Three Main Acts / Parts / Levels" that will make up bulk of the story of the game and each "Act" will generally include a sizable amount of rooms to explore as well as advancing important parts of the story. Depending on how the game progresses along after a while, I may decide to add an extra "Fourth Act", and possibly some "Bonus Acts" - For example: Ending Acts and/or Ending Scenes may differ according to the choices the character makes during the game.

Here's another sneak-peek of the game in action ( *Note - picture has been "cropped" from the original, and this picture was saved in 'jpg' format, so quality seen here is reduced from what will be seen in-game):

Jack continues to explore his surroundings.

Sorry to hear about your father.

The game is looking very good!Ã,  I'm glad you posted an update cuz I am really lookin forward to this.Ã,  I wish you the best of luck on the rest of the project and I can't wait to play it upon completion!Ã,  Ã, ;D

Hi y'all.
In case anyone is still following this GIP progress and anticipating this game, thought I'd post a quick update and to let you know that, yes, I'm still working on this project.Ã,  Apologies for the slowness of progress on this project lately... due to some personal things going on in life, plus being a bit busy with my work at times.

I've now decided on a new title for my game: "The Elevator - Rise from the Abyss!".

The First "Chapter (Level)" of the game is now completed (just a few little tweaks and odd n' ends to polish up). As of now (April.06.2006 my time), the game is approximately 50% completed.

I been play testing the optional joystick/controller interaction with good success.Ã,  It's kind of neat to be able to sit back a little from the computer and completely control the game via the gamepad controller. Of course mouse control will be the default.

Most of the main "Jack" character sprite graphics are now completed, along with most of the "Jane" sprites. Currently I have some "Zombie & Monster" sprites in the works, though it's a bit slow going getting that done.Ã,  I been carefully choosing and adding in appropriate sounds effects and ambient noises for the various areas and scenes which really help add a level of depth and feel to the atmosphere of the game. The "Health / Injury" system for my game seems to work quite well now.

No release date set yet. It takes as long as it takes, and depends on how much time I'm able to put into the project during my spare time... but I hope to get the project done sometime within 2006.

I'll keep you updated sometimes about my progress.

Best wishes. --- Don, the "Barbarian".

PS: Thanks to everyone who sent me nice words.

Very awesome game. Lots of good work. I really like the way your using "stolen" graphics. I myself am doing the same kind of "stealing." You keep working, and it'll be awesome. Also, not sure if this is what you want or not, but Jack always has his head downward, and Jane alsways has her head upward. It's an interesting contrast. One looks depressed, and the other looks happy. This looks like it will be in the "Top 10" list once it's done.

Greetings again fellow Adventurers.

Just thought I'd post a quick update to let y'all know that I'm still making progress on my game.
As of the time of this posting (early May.17.2006 my time), the overall game I'd say is approximately around 55% completed.

I'm putting some final touches and fixes on "Chapter One" right now, and soon will begin work on "Chapter Two" (In fact some very early stages for "Chapter Two" has been partially done).Ã,  Also, for anyone who may have played my first, but short, original "Elevator" game, the puzzles within the Elevator has also been changed a bit (to make it a bit more interesting and fresh), and I tried to do away with any difficult "pixel-hunting" elements as much as possible, yet of course there will be some required examination of rooms & areas to find some hotspots / items and such, but hopefully it should be more obvious this time.

Zapper: Thanx for the positive comments. Well, yes, in a way I wanted "Jack" to have a bit of a more "somber and serious" look and personality about his character as the game progresses, and "Jane" to be more "bright and happy" (well, at least at first).Ã,  In "Chapter One", these characters personalities, backgrounds plus a growing bond between those characters will surface to allow the player to have a better sense of them. In following Chapters, certain events or decisions may seriously "test" the "bond / friendship" between these characters, and I want to create an environment in which the player might become involved and "feel" the tensions and emotions that will come out during certain times in the story and gameplay.

Kostas: Thanx, but, most of graphics so far are "borrowed" from other sources (as explained in previous postings). However, I hope I put it all together in such a way to make it appealling and interesting. It's a little bit difficult in some ways to do it this way, but overall I think the look and effects of the visuals are turning out fairly good. Anyways, the way I'm doing the graphics now (or at least the style of them) I though might allow for a more sense of "realism" to come across as the player progresses through the game, and hopefully this will sort of give a bit of a sense of the player of "really being there".Ã,  Play this game with the lights down low, the volume up a bit and at night-time and hopefully the "full effect and feel" of what I'm going for will probably come across better to the playerÃ,  ;)

JRock: Thanks agian for the moral support. Helps to keep me inspired and working away on this project.Ã,  Yes, I was thinking for a long time on a good name for this game, and actually I thought of that name, "Rise from the Abyss", earlier on but needed a bit of time to "feel" that it would fit my game appropriately before announcing it.

Ã,  Ã, I'm soon (perhaps after a few more days of this posting) about to share an early "Alpha Version" to a few people who's been helping me with some of this project (Mozesh has been helping me with getting some great looking "Zombie Sprites" and Scorposer has been helping with a few sound-effects and he may do some Music / Sounds-Tracks / Loops for the project as well.Ã,  And "Sean" who will be helping me with some backgrounds). So maybe once they have a chance to check out my early "Alpha Version", I might perhaps ask them be able to share some comments here of what they think of the project so far as well (but without giving away too much specifics of certain parts such as puzzles and such ;D ). Or maybe we'll just keep you all in total suspenceÃ,  ;) We'll see!

Okay, gotta get back to working on my project now.

Greetings once again Adventurers.Ã,  :)

Just a quick update regarding progress of this project:

"Elevator - Rise from the Abyss" is still in production, though this particular month (June, 2006) production for it will slow-down for it. I won't be spending as much time on it this month as I'm currently putting my efforts into a little gaming project for this months MAGs competition.Ã,  Of course, after June is over, I will re-focus my attention and efforts back into my "Elevator / Abyss" project.

Getting feedback from some of the people who have had the chance to try the "Chapter One" (alpha version), overall they all seemed quite impressed and pleased with the game so far.Ã,  (Perhaps a couple of them might even post up a few of their comments here)Ã,  ;)
Ã,  Ã,  They also gave me some good constructive-critisism in which I will use to improve the game, and in that regards I have already implemented into my game many of their suggestions.Ã,  So, thanks again to my "helpers" for their early "Alpha Testing" of my game so far.

Ã,  Ã, And, thanks again to all of you adventure gamers with your continued moral support.Ã,  I appreciate your comments, and I feel confident that most of you will enjoy and be pleased with the completed project.

Candle: Thanks man! You've been supportive of me regarding this project since early on. But, alas, I must ask of you to be a bit more patient, as wait you must. I will TRY to get it completed ASAP, hopfully within 2006.Ã,  :o

Mykayel: Mucho appreciate the supportive comments.Ã,  And yes, you must wait too! Heheh.

Stan: Hey, I feel honored that you put my project into your "favorite games-in-production" list. Thanks for the nice comments and support!

PS: I've already put in around 10 months of my "spare time" on this project, and I know it seems to be taking a long time. But, I think it's better that I try to produce a project of "quality & playability" that I will strive for,Ã,  than to overly "rush" it (which if I did try to overly rush production or if I took too many "short-cuts", the overall game would suffer and not be as good as the vision I have in mind for it).Ã,  Ã, I know that the end project will still be lacking in many ways, but I want to still try to do my best on this with the limited resources and in the way that I've choosen to go about producing it. Still, I think so far that I'm on the right-track in producing a fairly good quality game in which I think most Adventure Gamers will appreciate and enjoy.

I have to say, Barbarian, this game looks absolutely amazing.
Question, though: Are those all prerendered, or will a 3D camera be involved?
In any case, it looks great, I really look forward to playing it!

Greetings Adventurers.  :)
Sorry I haven't had much to post about regarding my GIP here for the last couple of months, so I thought I'd take a moment to let you all know that I have not given up on my project and that I've slowly been making a bit more progress.

Life, work and other commitments have been keeping me really busy lately, so unfortunately I've not made as much progress as I've wanted to this last while.

I may not be able to include all the elements into my game as I originally thought ( it's a fairly big project and requires a LOT of time and effort on my part  - though I  did have some wonderful help in some aspects of my project from a few of the other AGS members as I believe I already mentioned in some of my previous posts), but still overall I'm fairly pleased with how my project is shaping up.  And once the adventure-gaming fans out there get a chance to play my game when it's completed, I think (hope) it will be an enjoyable gaming experience for them.

Still no estimated time to when I feel the game might be ready for release (it takes as long as it takes), but I do hope to release it sometime within 2006.

I'll probably post another update in the near future (perhaps including a new screen-shot as well) after I get some more significant progress made.
=====================================================

Question about the possibility of releasing this project in "Chapters":

I have "Chapter One" of my game pretty much completed, and have been making some progress into "Chapter Two".  The file-size is growing fairly large already, and as I make more additions it keeps getting bigger.

So, here's a couple of questions for anyone who might have interest in my game:  Would you like to see "Chapter One" released first, as a "separate" game in itself? Which would mean that the overall file-download-size would be a bit smaller, and which also would mean I could probably have "Chapter One" of my game ready for release very soon (perhaps within a couple of weeks of the time of this posting).  Keep in mind that "Chapter One" by itself would probably be able to be played through by an experienced Adventure Gamer in probably about a half-hour (or less).

Or, do you prefer to wait until I can include all the Chapters I tentatively had in mind into this project (about 3 Chapters / Perhaps 4 as an "alternate ending" or as "bonus Chapter)? Which would mean a longer game-playing-time, but it would also make for a larger overall file-size to download, plus it would take a LOT longer to wait until the overall whole game, including all Chapters, is completed and ready for release.
=================================

   Thanks for any feedback.

Title: Re: Rise fm the Abyss! (feedback requested)
Post by: Nikolas on Sun 13/08/2006 07:57:47
I think that I would personally prefer to have the whole game released with all the chapters. Somehow the 1st chapter would seem a little...'small' to be released alone, without this meaning that the 1st chapter is not a great part and not worth playing. I was privilaged enough to give it a try and I have to say that I was really impressed. But the ending in the 1st chapter would have me hanging out for more ...

Keep it up.

And thank you for the updates. You are one of the few members thatg are really updating their projects every once in a while, and it is great!

BTW, I was playing the other day the game Obscure. Do your graphics have to do anythign with that particular game? I'm in an extra slow connection so I'm not able to check the whole thread to see if you have mentioned it before. :)

Keep it up!
Title: Re: Rise from the Abyss!
Post by: Barbarian on Fri 25/08/2006 17:46:14
Nikolas: Thanks for the feedback.
I think you're right that it's better to release it as a "bigger / more complete" game rather than in "Chapters".Ã,  So, it'll just have to take longer before I can release the whole thing then.Ã,  ;)

Yeah, some of the graphics I've "borrowed" from the Obscure game, as well as some other various sources (Such as Half-Life 2 and Silent Hill 4 to mention a couple). I'm trying to blend the various graphics in such as way though that it still looks good together and hopfully will fit in with the overall "feel" of the game that I'm striving for.
---------------------------------

And now for a little more "eye candy"... I present a new screen-shot from Chapter 2 that shows Jack in a very creepy room.
(Note: this screen shot was re-sized and saved in jpg format, so the quality is much lower than what will be seen in-game.)

Mykayel:Ã,  Thanks for the comments.Ã,  Yes, I don't intend to rush production, but I'm back to making steady progress on it now. I'm still hoping to have it released for sometime within 2006.

Ã,  Ã,  Yes, the most recent image I posted above was "borrowed" from Silent Hill 4.Ã,  Ã, ;D

Ã,  Ã, I was still planning on making "multiple endings". Well, at least 2 different endings. Depending on some choices made during gameplay will depends on how things turn out for the player.Ã,  Also, I'm planning to throw in a couple of "easter egg" type of bonuses / surprises as well.

Ã,  Ã, Okay, it's back to working on my project now.

Hi guys. Just a quick update to say that I'm making steady progress on this project during the last few weeks.

As of today (September.20.2006 my time), I'd say that this game is approximately 65% completed.

I'm working on some of the "Zombie Fighting" sequences at the moment, and have good progress made on "Chapter Two" of my game.

Cosmo: Good to know that my first little "Elevator" game scared ya! That was the intent I was going for. And yes, this game will be MUCH scarier... I'm making it, and during some of the play-testing it even scares the crap outta me!Ã,  Ã, Be sure to have a spare pair of underwear handy before playing this one!Ã,  ;)Ã,  I think this game might cause some people a sleepless night or two. Heheh!

Calacver: Thanks for the motivation. Nice to know there's a few of you out there eager to see my game in action. It almost feels like"hard work" sometimes making this project, but, I think the end result will be worth the time and effort I'm spending on this.

PS: I might put up another screen-shot or something in the near future.

Greetings once again Adventurers.Ã,  :)

Just to let you all know that I'm still working on this project and slowly making more progress.

Unfortunately other things in life have been keeping me fairly busy lately, so I've not had as much spare time to work on this project as I want. But, still, I am little-by-little still making progress.

Some of the "Zombie chase & fighting sequences" are shaping up nicely.

Also, with the wonderful help and work of fellow AGS member, "RedBlob", they've been so great in providing me with some fresh characters that I'll be including into this game as well.Ã,

Check out a snap-shot of one of the new Zombie characters provided by RedBlob. Heheh, gotta like the tie, it's a nice touch.

Currently at the time of this posting, I'd say overall progress is around the 68% mark. Not sure if I'll be able to finish the game by the end of the year (which I'm hoping), but I'll see how things shape up.

Oh yes, for best effect, you should play this game late at night with the lights down low and the sound turned up a bit. It'll be guaranteed to scare da crapp outta ya!Ã,  ;)

No, my birthday is in the summer. But I honestly mean what I say. I couldn't finish 5 days a stranger because of a glitch and because it scared my socks off. (Voodoo doll on a stick part, I had to quit.) I really like these kind of games, but I just don't have the guts. (Luigi's Mansion at nights with the lights off can scare me.) I really hope I have the guts by the time this thing is released to play it, without 2 minute bathroom breaks. It looks easy 10.

Greetings once again Gargoyles 'n Garboyles!

I know, I know, I've been a slacker lately and you're probably wonderin' "Is dat lazy Barbarian still makin' dat kool lookin' Abyss game?"

And to answer you: "YES! I still be slavin' away making it."

Though, I admit I've not put in as much time & effort on it this last couple of months due to other stuff going on in life... But still, some more progress has been made.Ã,  Unfortunately, as things go, there's no way I'll be able to get it ready for completion by the end of this year (which I was originally hoping for).
But no worries, I've not given up on this project and I WILL get it done. Though for now I can't promise any estimated time of completion untill I'm near the finishing line (still, I am tentatively hoping for within the next few coming months sometime, I'll see how things go).

Well, to wet your whistle again in more anticipation, here's another snap-shot of a loverly new Zombie character as provided by the wonderful members "RedBlob":

The "Zombie Chase / Fight" scenes are shaping up nicely now, though a few kinks & special-effects to work out yet.

Ã,  Ã, Thanks again for all the comments everyone. It helps to inspire me to keep going.Ã,  Ã, And yes, better get those cuddly-teddy-bears ready to protect ya when you play this game, you're gonna need it.Ã,  ;)Ã,  Zapper: Maybe I'll send ya a special early "Beta" version for a Christmas gift. heheheh.

Greetings once again mighty Adventurers.

Just to let you know that I'm still working on this project.
I took a little break from it for a few weeks, but now I'm getting back into it.
As of this posting (Jan.21.2007 my time), I'd say overall project completion is at around 72%.

Still slowly making progress, but I think if I can keep at it regular in my spare time then it may be close to completion after a couple more months or so.

I wanted to ask if there's any of you graphically / artistically gifted AGSers out there that may be interested to help me in making a new set of icons for the action GUI (the standard Walk, Look, Hand - Interaction, Talk, Inventory, Current Item, Save, Load and Info), as well as making according action pointers for the mouse for selected modes.   My game is in 800 x 600 resolution mode.  You can see from the previous screen-shots of my game of the look / style of the graphics for the game, so something that could match nicely would be welcome.

Also, perhaps in the near future I'll be looking for some Beta-Testers. Though I must warn that the download will be fairly sizable (not sure of what the  Beta zipped size will be when it's ready, but it will most likely be around 70MB or more).  So, if any of you may be interested to be a Beta-Tester for this game (and have a high-speed connection or are very patient in downloading), then let me know and I'll keep you in mind for when that phase is ready.

Thanks.

Don!

Welcome once again to these places!

Glad to hear the project is going ok. Wish I could help you graphicaly, but I suck (and I have proven it to you ;))

But: I can help with the Beta testing. Because it's ONE HECK OF A GAME already (I've played act I, everybody).

So keep me in mind. 70 Mb would take around 5-10 minutes of download time, which is rubbish for me. Don't worry for it... ;). Plus this 72% (how on earth do you guys make these numbers? I mean in TFE game, I just told Lemmy and binky to put in 30% in music, but not really idea if it's 20% or 40%... :p whoops... shouldn't have said that probably ;D)
Title: Re: Rise from the Abyss!

Nik: Hey, thanks man. Knew I could count on you.Ã,  ;DÃ,  And of course, thanks for the nice comments about my game. It's come a long way since that early Alpha version I let you try before.

But yeah, coming up with these % numbers, basically I take my best "guessimation", errr, estimate. I have in mind what I'd like to include in my overall game and what I can realistically do (I have the whole story and other details pretty much worked out), then from there I have a rough idea of where the overall completed project is at. Plus remember I've also worked on a few other AGS projects as well so I have experience in guessing where I'm at percent-wise in completion. So the 72% is not an exact figure.. Heck, it could be more like 60% or 80%... but I try to pick a rough ball-park figure of somewhere between a low and high estimate.Ã,  ;)

So, any more victims, errr, I mean volunteers I can tentatively put down on my Beta-Testers list?Ã,  Still may be a little early to ask for Beta-Testers, but I'm close to the finishing stretch now and thought I'd get prepared.

And, if any of you might want to have some part in helping me with my project in any way, feel welcome to contact me with your ideas & suggestions andÃ,  perhaps we can work something out.

I'd be interested in Beta Testing.

By the way; I have just seen this: (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/zomb04_01.jpg)
I can't wait for the "Zombie Chase / Fight" scenes!

Greetings Adventurers!

'Tis I, the mighty Barbarian. Iiii aammmm baaack!  :)

Yeah, I know, I know, it's been ages since I've been around these parts.
What can I say? I was kidnapped by a group of Cthulhu cultists for a while.
Well, you know how it goes, sometimes life gets in the way of life.
I had other things going on for a while that kept me away, but now I'm missing AGS and the gang here, and thought I'd now dust off my old "Abyss" project and continue on with it.

Wow, it's already been 2 years since I first started working on this project. It's come a long way since then, I'd say currently around 75% completed, though I did have it "on hold" for the last while.

So, would any of you still be interested in seeing this project completed and released?  If so, I'll get back into working on it and try to finally get the whole thing together.

Welcome back Don!

You know it, but I would like to see the abyss completed! The first part that I played looked mighty and professional and awesome! So bring it on baby! :D I'm sure that scorposer will also be eager to keep on working on the music and if you need a beta, you know where to look! ;)

Welcome back my friend!
