Title: January MAGS
Post by: Klaus on Sun 01/01/2006 00:45:25
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website (http://www.mags-competition.tk)

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New year, new competition, new topic - this time by Bernie...

Topic: Old people

DESCRIPTION:
Your game should tell a small story of someone old. Be it gramps trying to get those pesky kids off his lawn or granny solving a murder mystery in the neighbourhood, anything goes! Old people face problems we wouldn't even think about while we're still young, so there should be plenty of room for interesting ideas.

REQUIREMENTS:
-Your main character needs to be old (65+) and retired.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by January 27th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

Well, to comfort you, I've been a member of this community since 2002, and I've made a whole lot. Of nothing. Yeah. That's right.
A whole lot.  :)

Of course, that is about to change.

I'm also working on a game for the January MAGS. It will be my first AGS game... that is if I actually finish it.

Me too.
I've work'd on many... completed none.
BTW, when I check the 'this month' section on the official MAGS site, I dont find anything about this competition and also, do I post my entry HERE or what?

Yes, this is a special fact these weeks as there is also the voting for the favourite MAGS game of 2005 running right now. Sorry. As this is the one that ends earlier I put that competition there. The "history" area now also lists MAGS 2006-01.

Correct. First you upload the game to some webspace of your choice. Then - as written above - you simply post the download link of your entry to this thread here before January 27th (best with a screenshot). That's all. Your game will then be added to the MAGS site and of course also to the list of games that people can vote for...

I have exams until the 23rd, so I'll just defer making the rest of my game until then

Does it have to be an adventure game?

UPDATE:  I just made a game in the last few hours (it's almost finished) it's a increadibly short and reasonably violent FPS where you're a war veteran fed up with kids playing soccer near your house.  It also has a full Beatbox soundtrack!

It's pretty basic, but for my first finished game and something made in about 3 hours, it's ok.

Do we have to submit it in some specific place in the MAGS website, or just here?

Sure. You can also enter with a one-room-game as there are no restrictions set in the rules.

i tried, scottdoom, but my email cant handle it.  :'(
so, i guess im out of luck.

it seems the biggest problem about making games is hosting them. for me anyway.

Will it not allow you to upload a file that big, or did it just time-out when trying to upload?
Title: Re: January MAGS
Post by: Mordalles on Tue 17/01/2006 23:10:10
well, the email is suppose to handle up to 2gig, so i guess its a time out. my connection is too slow. nothing i can do about it then? good luck to the other entries.

The following link was meant to be for AGS members to use, but recently attempting to upload a file seems to results in errors, hopefully it will be fixed soon (I sent 'em an email about the problem):

finally, after struggling a week to get this thing on the net.

This is a short MAGS game for January 2006, set in Vietnam. The general (older than 65 according to the rules), is searching for his own base, and can't quite remember where it is.
This game was made in 5 days to test the inventory and portraits, and it seems that making a commando's/desperado's clone in AGS is quite capable.

Unfortunately I will not be able to finish the game that I've been working on (but I really didn't think that I would). But I have learned a lot about making graphics and using the AGS editor, so maybe I'll be back next month.
I look forward to playing all the great games that will be finished.

Here is my MAGS game (January 2006). I know, I know it's another pirate game, i have no defense against that  ;D.

Help Captain Bloodhook Flamebeard find his old family treasure. Forty years of search have brought him close to its hiding place, but his crew abandoned him as they grow tired of this hopeless quest. But Bloodhook is not alone as some others also seek the family treasure.

We're close to the deadline... If anyone still wants to enter please present your game here within the next 20 hours (see timestamp of this posting). Then the voting will begin.
Title: Re: January MAGS
Post by: mwahahaha on Fri 27/01/2006 07:24:29
Well, anyone else who's going to enter had better do it now, unless my maths has taken a sudden turn for the worse you have 2 and a half hours.

Seeing as this is my first MAGS, don't mind me asking, but how many entries are there normally?  There's only 4 for this one (with mine being by far the worst, crap games FTW(Or FTL as the case may be)) but looking back at some of the competitions that seems to be quite a few.

?? What does FTW stabd for? I think 4 is a healthy number as there were in total 29 MAGS games released last year.

You guys know how to vote? No need to post your choice in this thread as this voting only works by clicking the game in the list some posts before or by selecting your favourite game on the MAGS website (http://www.mags-competition.tk). If there are problems with the online voting system please contact me via PM. Thanks.

Anyway you're of course free to post your comments. Maybe you could tell us your thoughts about all entries. Pros and cons of the games. What did you like, what not. In this case it's interesting how you compare the games - if this is possible at all.

I really liked both Infantry division 1338 and the Family Treasure, but overall I most enjoyed 1338, it was just more original and was well designed and executed.

I'm voting for Sinitrena's Lonely Night. The other games were great, most of them looked better - but there's something about this game I just can't ignore. Besides, I think it was the one who followed the rules best (the general in Infantry Division wasn't really retired, was he?... nor do I think he was the main character... and the captain in The Family Treasure didn't look old at all).
Can't write anymore now... I have to go find the music from Lonely Night...

Hey my guy looked old, didn't you see the hunchback, and i cannot make his hair grey since he's Captain Bloodhook Flamebeard. It's in his family. He's on the 65 year old limit since two day ago was his birthday

Well, at least now I know that I have to put in a little more effort into my game.  Sorry if anyone was offended by how bad it was.  I'll be sure that my next MAGS entry is much, much better. :P

If anyone voted for me, I can safely say that you're verging on criminally insane.

So time for voting is over now and once again we face a winner.
At the beginning the votes for two entries counted up in a similar
way but then the wheels of the now second placed entry didn't
turn fast enough to keep in touch. Now we have the winning game:

Captain Bloodhook Flamebeard made the race in the end!
Congratulations to buloght and his game The Family Treasure.

Also many thanks to the other adventure game creators
for a nice start of the MAGS competition in 2006.
